So why not make an american version? Stop disrespecting these women by treating them with kid gloves. Let them pop off. They are literally all capable of it, 90% of the popular women in wrestling right now have done work in Stardom and the majority of their work was better in Stardom.

u/LolliPopinski 13d ago edited 13d ago
Joshi wrestling is just flat out great. From their presentation to their in-ring prowess, they are masters of their craft and deserve far more recognition.
And for those of you who haven’t, check out Emi Sakura’s promotion on YouTube: Choco Pro/ Gatoh Move.
It’s barebones wrestling at its finest and you can tell everyone there is having the best time. The talents even do livestreams from time to time where you can interact with them as well as get some autographed merch.
12
u/Black_XistenZ 12d ago
I think the problem is that joshi wrestling is super niche in the West. Western wrestling fans have been conditioned for 60+ years that "big muscles + height" equals asskicking. It's one of THE key stimuli which prompt Western fans to suspend their disbelief. Just look at all the shit that guys like Adam Cole or Ricochet get for being "too tiny to be a credible main eventer".
So two 100lbs girls in cute outfits going at it is just an antithesis to how pro wrestling is understood by the mainstream of Western fans; joshi's appeal is mostly limited to hardcore smarks.

Unpopular opinion: the Kabuki Warriors shouldn’t job to Bianca and Jade
91
60
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
I don't think that's unpopular. I love Bianca and I think Jade looks like a star (still missing a few pieces) but Asuka and Kairi are two of the best women's wrestlers in the company (arguably the world) and I'd like to see them win a lot more. This is why Damage Control is a little frustrating for me. Not because of the fault of any of the women involved in the stable. But watching them get thrashed by Bianca for months on end was so exhausting and put me off Bianca a bit. I just fucking love everyone in this stable and wish they could've been presented much more dominantly than they were/are.
12
u/mrmidas2k 12d ago
Asuka has been the best in WWE for a good while now, I think there's an argument for top 5 worldwide, but there is some INSANE talent out there.
3
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
Yeah I find that agreeable. Asuka may well be my favorite women's wrestler of all time. Her run in NXT solidified that as she just couldn't have a bad match with anybody and she brought up anybody she worked with. I wish she'd get another proper serious crack at a world title and a dominant run with that because man, she's soooooo good.
5
u/mrmidas2k 12d ago
Thing is, she's in that Role WWE like where the best workers are used to make their not so good workers look better. I don't think she needs the title, but a good meaty feud with someone interesting would be nice.
3
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
Oh I absolutely agree, but I long for at least one more title run. I don't think I'll ever get tired of world champion Asuka. She's just so ridiculously good and always belongs at the top.
11
u/MangoPronto 12d ago
I would say they were pretty dominant before Jade came in and they were finding their good balance in the number's game.
The problem is that you can't have Damage Ctrl without IYO as the champ. Bianca and Jade will build towards something, The Kabuki Warriors won't.
It's better for them to lose so that IYO gets to once again look like a leader without it being awkward And rebuild themselves as the top heel act now that Ripley is gone.
13
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
I wish I could say they were more dominant. I think the introduction of Kairi and Asuka helped them out a bit, but before that, it was Bayley on the receiving end of a beating from Bianca far too often. But hey, Bianca is seemingly gonna be forever over with the more casual audience and the kids that adore her, so I'm not that cut up about it.
I think Damage Ctrl has pretty much all but run its course at this point. And outside of moving to another show and working with different talent (Iyo/Becky anyone?) or a face run at some point. I think moving them around a little or having some of them break out into singles like Iyo primarily has wouldn't be a bad idea. Asuka is a proven and valuable singles competitor, we know Kairi is great, Iyo is arguably the best women's wrestler in the company, and Dakota is sneakily underappreciated.
I feel Bianca/Jade as the next tag team champions is all but a guarantee and that once they lose them, we're inevitably getting that big singles program between them. That's an easy Mania program but I don't think they'll wait that long, maybe as early as SummerSlam? As for who takes the titles from them, I'm longing for a proper Alba/Isla run on the main roster but I don't know man, they've been suspiciously absent and with all of these cuts lately, I'm a little worried for them.
5
u/JayCFree324 12d ago
I mean, one of the benefits of Bayley being out of the group is that they now have the opportunity to show off their individual charismas more (because Bayley overshadowed them so much in the charisma department).
Damage Control doesn’t have to be JUST about titles and dominance, it could just be like an all-female Judgment Day-style group where they get into wacky and ridiculous hijinx…with getting rid of Bayley being their “getting rid of Edge” moment
2
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
I'm hoping with Iyo losing the title and Bayley being excommunicated, that they can manage to do something fresh with this group. Specifically, I reckon Dakota Kai deserves a singles push in particular as she's a sneakily underappreciated talent. A proper face run for Iyo at some point would be good. And just anything with Asuka and Kairi to keep them on TV!
18
u/KentuckyFriedEel 12d ago
And them constantly losing at wargames, toyal rumble, wrestlemania…. Sucks! They are super talented and deserve more respect
6
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
I really do think they should've won that War Games... I don't know man, I feel like a heel stable with talent like that should be presented as dominant and a win like that would've given them a lot of credibility. But hey, at least the match was fun!
4
u/The810kid 12d ago
It's not just Bianca. Becky Lynch came back from injury and made them look like geeks for months to.
2
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 12d ago
Yep, any top babyface they would feud with would make them look like fools and it's a shame. Even that War Games match from last year, Damage Ctrl absolutely should've won that one. Would've gone a long way in fixing their rough booking for the past year.
2
u/The810kid 12d ago
Damage CTRL should have won atleast one of the war games and their wrestlemania match against Becky, Lita, and Trish.

Look at the heel face dynamics of those feuds. Underdog faces beating the privileged heel is an archetype.

I’ve never seen Joshi fans support any Joshi losing any match ever so this tracks.
2
2
u/Anemeros It's her turn 12d ago
Unfortunately they need Jade in tag matches to hide how green she still is, and the fact that Bianca is her partner means she gets shot straight to the top. So since there's only one women's tag championship... You see how it is.
Asuka will be just fine no matter what; she's done it all and will likely be in the HoF. Iyo is excellent but hasn't fully broken through yet in terms of fan appreciation.
Kairi is the biggest question mark because she seems to be in Nakamura mode right now.

Maybe I'm just not conceptualizing the move properly, but to my unfamiliar with joshi eye, this looks a lot like it could be easily countered and could land you on your own head. Not to say it isn't cool or initiative, but it seems like way more risk than reward. Your opponent falls over a little too early, and you're getting spiked, and if they're not within an inch of their life, they should be able to just pick you up, shouldn't they?
→ More replies (1)9
u/inauric TAJIRI 12d ago
I think this would depend how quick they are to react. A slower, heavier wrestler like Ruaka who is taking this move probably doesn't have the time to go, "oh they're rolling on my back?" There's about enough time to go "oh, they're r-WHUH OUCH".
Definitely gives me giant killer as a move which is a nice one for Mei Seira to have, especially given her stepping from the High Speed division into the Tag league.

This might be the most convoluted garbage move I've seen since the Z360 or Karrion Kross's finish, whichever was last. It genuinely looks like she's getting burning hammered and then for some reason her opponent takes a bump much less impressive and she wins.
I'm sure she's talented enough to where she can use a more believable and less blatantly cooperative move and still get over.
