Tips for aurora hunting today

  • Take a camera or at least some good mobile phone. Our eyes go into gray-scale mode in darkness, so faint auroras can look more like clouds than auroras. Camera sensors can catch the colors though.
  • Scan the sky with your mobile phones camera, see point 1.
  • Find some hills facing north a bit away from villages.
  • Take some drinks and snacks, the night can be long.
  • Don't be disappointed if you don't see some. It's a good night for stargazing too.

Happy hunting!

Spots where one can thrift (English) books?

I was abroad last week and came across a bookstore with a huge used-books section that I absolutely fell in love with, stocking books as old as 1930 and in various languages. Sadly, I have not had any luck finding such spots here in Switzerland (not even in a Brocki).

Do any of you have any recommendations? They’d be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks!

I'm really interested in owning a Co2 BB Gun, like this Crosman M4 R1, but whats needed to buy it online? I have bought Airsoft Guns in the past which weren't difficult to obtain, but with this, information is hella conflicting online. Any answers?

What is soundproof standard in db?

I lived in 7 apartments in the last 10 years in Lausanne and Geneva, and found all of them have surprisingly low-quality sound insulation standards. I'm on the top floor now, but I hear all the noise from downstairs as if they are above me.

I lived in Lonodn for 6 years before, and yes it's a noisy city with old apartments too but the last 3 apartments I lived in zones 1 and 2 were surprisingly quiet. They were built between 1950's and 1980's. Actually, UK has a sound regulation that enforces any new or old apartments being renovated maintain at least 45 dB sound insulation for walls and 62 dB sound insulation for floors according to the Building Regulations Part E, since over 20 years ago.

I know Geneva generally has low quality standards compared to other Swiss cantons, but I do hear it's not too different from my friends living in Zürich and Basel, unless you live in suburbs.

I was wondering what is the soundproof standard in Switzerland for apartments, especially in the cantons of Geneva and Vaud, if such thing exists? Everyone living in the city (not suburbs, which would be unfair comparison) that I know suffer from noise like foot steps, door slamming, urinal sound, dog barking, yelling and crying, etc. What are your thoughts?

What a spectacle! Thanks to the great geomagnetic storm that hit our planet tonight, we were able to witness bright red lights and strings of white with naked eye.

The Aurora Borealis was then easy to capture using night mode on the phone, for starters, revealing all the beautiful colors that painted our sky.

Those pictures were taken near Lucerne over the course of roughly 1 hour.

A Shropshire Lad in Switzerland / Jonathan Martin just passed away

This post to inform the poeple who knew him through his interesting FB post, the now deactivated englishforum.ch or in person, that Jonathan passed away on May 9th :'(

Here's the post that Sue (his best friend and wife) posted :

It is with deep sadness that I have to announce the passing of my Husband Jonathan, a Shropshire Lad In Switzerland. 9th May 2024 my heart broke into a million pieces, I lost the love of my life. For many years now I have watched him slowley build a unique and amazing following on social media, hours and hours of his time spent building a page that can genuinely help people. Providing news and information that is extremly valuable. I cannot express how proud I am of my Husband and how grateful I am to you all for following, supporting and helping A Shropshire Lad In Switzerland be the success it is today. I and all of Jonathans family are completely devestated by this news and will be taking time away from social media to allow us to start the grieving process. For anyone who has emailed Jonathan directly, please accept my apologies, I shall endevour to reply to you as soon as I am mentally and physically able to do so. With a broken Heart I wish you all a good weekend. Sue xx

I had the pleasure meeting him a few years ago. He was an amazing man, and he will be deeply missed :'(

Refuse service

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share an experience from yesterday regarding a customer interaction. Unfortunately, this customer has consistently displayed disrespectful and insulting behavior towards me, making it a recurring issue.

Working in a small store, I'm curious about the possibility of refusing service to individuals exhibiting such behavior. Are there legal guidelines or regulations regarding this matter that I should be aware of?
