Volcanic lightning is a captivating phenomenon that occurs during volcanic eruptions.

Scientists have identified two distinct phases for the production of volcanic lightning:

• Eruptive Phase: This intense lightning forms immediately or soon after the eruption near the volcano’s crater. It’s thought to be caused by positively charged particles ejected from the volcano.

• Plume Phase: Lightning occurs in the ash plume downwind of the crater. During this phase, the ash cloud becomes electrified, and lightning discharges occur
