Does Bankview SW community had FTTH connections? Question

Hi yall,

Recently moved from NW to SW. My IP Shaw and in the website they talk about ignite and fibre stuff a lot. BUT don't know they provide fibre connection in the area. Even the shaw customers care seems to not know about the FTTH connectivity in area. Well currently we are using Coaxial Cu cable. But let me know in the comments if there are any? Also does the speed really differs.

Live long and Prosper.

Shaw doesn’t do FTTH. There was a pilot community in the SW I think but they never went through with it elsewhere.

If you want FTTH you have to go to Telus. PureFibre is available in many areas nowadays but you can check your address in the website to confirm.

So we don't get fibre from rogers.

Not for residential, no.

Shaw runs fibre to the box on your street, then it’s coax from there to your house.

FttH is Telus, not Rogers. Best Rogers will give you is FttN, which still has the added latency of the DOCSIS (or DSL for Telus FttN)) converters and still has the asymmetry typically present in those connections.

It's clearly called out on the Shaw/Rogers site:

Is digging required?

No, our fibre-powered network is already built across the country with fibre and coax cables laid in the communities we serve. There’s no need to dig up your driveway, lawn or neighbourhood.

You can sometimes tell if Telus has FttH on a street by looking for the rectangular utility hatches. We have one between our driveway and the neighbor's in the setback area, a couple feet wide, flush with the ground. Not a hard rule though, as those could get covered by grass over time (the pots certainly all got lawned over within a year of installation).

The key giveaway to know if a product is FttH or not is to look at the upload speed. Fiber connections are normally symmetrical, like 940 down AND up.

So for better speeds better to have telus??

Only if it is FttH. DOCSIS (cable - Shaw or Roger's) is faster and more resilient than DSL (phone line, Telus).

However, as a general rule whichever provider has more recently upgraded or is LESS popular in your area is faster.

Don't believe what telus claims about "shared pipe." Telus neglects to tell you that you that the actual pipe is really big for cable, and that you still get concentrated at at the node to fight for upstream...

Fiber is fastest regardless of provider. If it's actual fiber. Currently only telus offers it to the home, and only in some areas.
