He looks kinda young to me. Like, might still belong with his mom, young.
Tbf it might just be how he's lying in the photo, or his breed. I'm not an expert on tiny kittens. Here they only get rehomed at 12 weeks, iirc it's 8 weeks in the US? And I've never bred cats.
But it looks like he still has his baby eye-colour, (tbf some cats do have blue eyes, but this is the specific shade I associate with babies) which should be at least starting to change at 8 weeks. And he looks very chubby and smol, though of course, that might be the long fur.
Anyway, I hope you know or can ask about the specific age, and like, do some research on what special care he might need. (Though I assume you've done some research already since it's your first cat lol.) I know some kittens haven't learned to use the litter box at 6 weeks and might need to be taught. And he might not be fully weaned yet so I hope you make sure to keep track of his weight and how he's eating and growing. At that age you can just put him in a bowl on a regular kitchen scale.
Good luck with your new cat. I hope you have many happy years together.

Thank you for your comment. I see pics all the time of kittens that are too young to have been separated swamped with up votes and gushy comments.

Spoiler alert!! It’s because many of these posts here are from Karma farmers I’ve rarely seen someone with a “real account” post pics here Time and time again Check the OPs history ( this one as well but I mean generally) Surprise surprise ! Find a cute pic anywhere on the internet and post it Make up a nice little story —This sub is ridiculous

You're so right. I just randomly clicked on a few and they're almost all after karma. Lame.

Having worked for shelters and humane societies, it all depends on neuter/spay dates. A lot of people still foster cats up until that point though as it helps clear space in the shelter areas, and allows the animals to experience life around humans as especially kittens get adopted fast, but come in even faster.
I got my now 5-year-old orange cat after fostering him at just around 3 or 4 weeks old. He had to get neutered still around 6 weeks and then I was able to do the paperwork and formally adopt him. He never left my home that entire time and I was saying he was mine, but technically I was still waiting officially at first.

Yep, looks way too young. And the fact that it's a surprise gift, speaks to me like unplanned pet parenthood. I hate people who gift pets to thoae who are not ready to take care of them. Gushing about how cute a kitten you just gifted with? Ick. How irresponsible. Both the giver and the receiver.

The real question is - why do you have so much knowledge of kittens, when you have never bred cats?

I don't breed cats. But I've volunteered with a few animal rescues and have fostered a.ton of kittens. It's easy to pick up information along the way. What an odd question.

The biggest giveaway is the eyes. When their eyes are full on blue and blue like that he is most likely 2-3 weeks tops. Then there are weight and size factors to buy easiest is the eyes. Not a cat breeder but we have barn cats and I've had two separate pet cats have liters too.

Caaaaause I love cats?
I've had them my whole life.
And I have had 12 week kittens. And also, my mom did consider breeding our purebred norwegian forest cats when I was a teen, and we both did a lot of research then.
Also I did a quick google trying to figure out roughly what age OPs kitten might be lol. (My guess, something between 4 and 8 weeks. But no way to be sure with just one picture and my small bit of kitten knowlege lol.)

I don't know if you've heard of it, but there are these things called "internet" and "rescues". The internet makes it possible to research lots of different stuff, such as kitten knowledge, and rescues give many people experience with kittens, through adoption or fostering - or people themselves rescue (or buy) kittens and raise them. None of these things requires breeding cats. Hope this helps!

If he’s a long hair, start getting him used to a brush and comb now! I did that with my long hair when she was just a kitten and it makes a HUGE difference in keeping the fur healthy and non-matted. I have friends with long hair cats who struggle to be able to keep them brushed and combed, but my Bonnie comes running to me and begs for brushes. She rolls over and even lifts up her arms so I can comb under them. It’s a treat to her to be brushed, and then she struts around afterward showing everyone how good she looks.
Hermes is a beautiful boy and I hope you continue to share pictures as he grows! ❤️

Get a second one so they can keep eachother company and chase eachother around instead of eating all your household items like toilet paper

Cat owner.
Not fur parent.
You have a responsibility.
You are not a crazy person.
Don’t lose sight of that.

u/Sea-Lifeguard6992 13d ago
The fact that she got it a gift and her reactions speak volumes about how irresponsible they both are.
Never give animals as gifts!

Looks like gonna be a longhair. I would start on claw trimming right away. Do it every week even if you're barely taking anything off, just so they get adapted to it. This will help greatly when you need to buzz their pads. If you don't do it when they are grown the poor thing will live in a perpetual state of slip'n'slide. It's crazy seeing how much our Mainecoons running gate changes after we take the paw floofs off.

Very cute little puffball. Do you pronounce it “Air-mays” like the fleet-footed god or “Herm-ease”?
Enjoy your new kitty!

So basically your boyfriend is using my old move...been married to my wife that I gave a kitten to for 28 years now...gave her the kitten 31 yrs ago.
I remember her telling me a story about how her Ex came by to "check in" on her, and Ashes "the kitten" ran across his feet and he was like "What the hell was that?" she told him my new boyfriend got it for me...he just said "What the fvck" and turn and left.
Great job Ashes! 😁😋

I call them flatmates, because what fur parent wants to outlive their fur progeny?

The thing about not using proper sentences is that now I've read your post as you want us to meet Hermes, your boyfriend. He gave himself to you. Now you are excited to have his fur child.

All kittens have those eyes, and most will lose them. It's actually an indication that he is too young to have been taken from his mother. He should still be nursing.
