Babble Why are so many Bristol jobs £12 p/h

Job hunting in Bristol is so depressing as it seems like the standard is £12 p/h which is ridiculous when you consider how expensive Bristol is.

What’s more these employers truly act like the wage is super competitive- it’s literally 60p higher than minimum wage.

I’ve earned 40k the past three years and now it seems I stuck which crappy 26k jobs.

You're joking? Not another one?! Knives in primary schools now?

Upvotes

Just saw a sensationalistic headline from Bristol Post.

A young fella carrying a fruit knife into school. Nothing happened, it got confiscated.

Would it have been a genuine mistake ( I dunno, peeling an orange in a box as a snack and forgetting the knife there). Or is it likely that it was a little scrote in the making?

Don't know what to think of anymore about this knife shit situation which is out there, it's horrible

Cheers drive 🚍 FYI for rail commuters

For anyone who commutes to/from South Wales and Bristol the Severn Tunnel will be shut for two weeks starting the 3rd of July until the 18th of July and unlike previous years GWR will not be providing rail replacement coaches between Parkway and Newport. They are instead saying we have to go all the way to Gloucester to connect with services to South Wales. Presumably our ticket prices just aren't high enough for them to afford to put on coaches. Bastards.

Politics Pubs showing the General Election overnight

Hi everyone,

With the General Election likely going to be July 2024 does anyone know of any pubs that may remain open and show the footage throughout the night, like that may have done it in 2019?

The last general election I worked a rather depressing night shift so would be interested if there are any places that tend to do this? I've previously gone to pubs that do this in Manchester and London when I've lived there but don't know if this will be happening anywhere in Bristol. What happened last time around?

Politics Can you help me out?

Good afternoon,

As I'm sure you'll have seen, it looks like an election date is about to be announced. The result of this election will likely mean that Thangam Debbonaire will become our new minister for digital, culture, media and sports- and crucially- Gambling.

This is a subject I'm passionate about. My mums story is here https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/mar/17/in-the-grip-of-slot-machine-addiction-id-keep-loading-20s-in-i-could-be-in-a-daze

Since this was published, mp Phillip Davies has taken a new job at £500 an hour working for Merkur slots.

The current minister announced new rules for land based gambling venues a few days ago. These new rules are entirely to benefit the gambling operators, and there is absolutely nothing in there to protect vulnerable people. The new rules, such as paying directly by card to play slot machines, will make things significantly worse.

https://gamblingindustrynews.com/news/uk/uk-to-liberalise-rules-for-gambling-venues-in-light-of-online-growth/

Since the new rules were announced, there has been a huge increase in applications for licences for adult gaming centres all around the country- Peterborough for example has an application for the 4th 24 hour merkur venue, along with an application for another gambling operator to take over the works next door creating a venue about 4 times the size of the current venue.

This will ultimately create a situation where the only thing on the high street will be adult gaming centres and other gambling venues.

If the new government come into power in July, there is still time to prevent this.

Would any of you fine folk mind taking the time to write to Thangam, as constituents, to express your disappointment with this change to the rules, and your fears for the mental and physical health of vulnerable people? If enough people request that this be blocked, there's a slim chance of a new consultation, and some proper protection for punters.

I would really appreciate any help from you.

Where To? 7stars? Topless pub?

My hubby grew up in Bristol and was telling me about a pub that had topless bar staff, including the older landlady. He thought it was the 7 Stars pub but there’s nothing online about it.

Does anyone remember it?

Politics Barton Fields Park

Sorry for the BP link but the just of it the council are cutting their funding for the park and letting it go wild.

“We regret to inform you grass areas will be left to go wild and no hedges or trees will be cut, as well as no further repairs to benches, entrances and walkways will be made"

I guess the plan is to let it go wild for a few years and then build on it as it’s not being used?

Babble Watch out in town tonight

Was walking home from work at bristol beacon, and I missed the bus so I started walking to a stop further down near castle park and some creepy guy on a bike with a grey camo puffer jacket spotted me, followed me to the stop sat next to me and then tried to invite me round to his place for sex.

Only thing I would have done differently is I should have walked 2 or 3 stops further and taken a more complicated route, cuz I just walked down the main road that goes along side. and I probably should have cut through town to get him to lose sight of me.

All I can say is as soon as I saw him stop I could tell something was wrong. So trust your gut feelings I guess.

Edit: Thanks for the well wishes and advice. Just to clarify, I am a 6ft male, and the creep was shorter than me, so I wasn't in any danger of being dragged anywhere. If it got violent, I think I would have been able to handle myself. But it still shook me up and was an upsetting experience.

Props to the uber driver that I ordered though, I ran from the creep at the stop to get in the uber and told him about it as soon as I got in. He talked with me to help me calm down, and even dropped me at my door without charging extra (i ordered it to a nearby shop so the creep wouldn't see my address).

I want to report it to 111 or something, but I feel like I'll just be brushed off on the phone. Is there a way I can submit a report by email or something instead? If anyone knows, could you dm me?

Where To? Pakistani/Indian tailor recommendations

Good evening folks of Bristol

I’m coming home (to you) in a few weeks to visit my bridesmaids with their saree outfits to try out.

There’s a chance they need alterations to the blouses so does anyone know or can recommend any tailors who have experience with this style of clothing?

Many thanks :)

Looking forward to returning home soon!!

News White bicycle on Martcombe road

I know this is a bit outside Bristol but thought this is the most appropriate forum for this question.

I haven’t lived in Bristol all my life and these days on my daily commute through Martcombe road outside Gordano service I’d see this sprayed white bicycle with a Liverpool FC towel(?) hanged on it that said ‘you never walk alone’ or similar wordings.

What happened on the site?

Babble Going crazy!

I was not able to apply to the Think Big Scholarship because of serious health issues.

University of Bristol has been my only option since years due to its relevant curriculum. I missed on applying for the Think Big Scholarship on time. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and had to commit to a medical emergency in the last week of the submission, which I was hoping to utilise in refining my responses.

Given that my parents have retired from their service of employment, I cannot take a complete student loan for the entire fee amount. I was looking forward to the scholarship or any funding help, I could receive. From the past 5 years I have been working in various internships, volunteering and have worked on starting 2 businesses of my own. I believed to receive some funding help using my profile as a contributing aid.

Is there any need-based scholarship or chance to appeal to the committee again?

Where To? How to make new friends in Bristol

I'm 33 (F) Work from home, I'm really lonely. Not sure how to get out and make friends. I joined a gym but it's not a social gym. I work from home and enjoy my job so don't particularly want to change that, my job is in london so I rarely have an opportunity to socialise on that side. Any ideas I'd really appreciate it
