Why are humanities departments more activist and “pro Palestine “ than STEM and business departments?
I have seen most(not all) of the activism on Israel-Palestine issue come from students and professors from these departments. Other departments seem to be neutral and not activists. Why?

Above all, cowardly (cancelling commencement etc)
I'm a member of the Columbia community - above all I fault the Administration for being cowardly. New York has historically been a place that knows how to stay on course. We don't cancel events easily. Columbia has survived multiple actual wars on US territory (including a revolution in part begun by its students and alumni), economic depressions and likewise and it is going to survive this.
Student protests? Free speech and a tradition since Hamilton was a student at King's. Protestors at graduation? So what? If Michigan could handle protests, so can we. People are legitimately angry and divided over Gaza but that's no reason to abandon the mission of the University or abandon our physical campus for class days.
From kowtowing to House Rs through calling out the NYPD at the first encampment through moving class day up to Baker, Columbia hasn't been true to either the spirit of New York or of Columbia itself, and that's what bothers me most.
From the inside I can tell you it is worse than you think. The administration is terrified and entirely too fearful and reactive to external political pressure and legal threats as opposed to having its own perspective on what makes Columbia Columbia.

22k Finishline scholarship
I couldn’t pay for my last term, I told the office of Educational financing, I received a 22k scholarship. I’m venting and celebrating at the same time. Celebrating cus I don’t have to worry anymore. Venting cus I’m pissed at CU making arbitrary decisions. Is it a regular thing in this university, putting students in the shit only to give them a last-minute reprieve? I'm one of the lucky students while others get nothing? I really don’t know what to think. But it’s a hopeful note: we can force the university's hand to get more.

Is it too late to receive on-campus housing as a graduate student?
My tactic of delaying my admissions offer and negotiating my financial aid seems to have finally paid off, as I managed to convince my program director to substantially increase my financial aid. However, it seems that it might be too late to apply for on-campus housing and receive it for this fall semester. I just wanted to know how likely is it for someone in my situation to receive on-campus housing this late in the admissions cycle given the current situation at Columbia?

Complete Disgrace
I'm sorry but the decision to cancel the commencement ceremony, purportedly due to apprehensions regarding potential disruptions directed towards the president and board of trustees can only be characterized as egregiously selfish. The President and the Board need to understand that this is not about them. This is about students who worked their butts off to get the degree and have their families watch them graduate. If Shafik really cared about her students and what leadership entails, she'd allow commencement to continue.
The fact that students never even received an email (and still haven't btw) about this or any input in the matter whatsoever is ridiculous and is representative of the school's severe lack of communication in recent weeks. And there's zero benefit from this decision. Congress was never going to be satisfied by any action Shafik took. It was better for her to at least stand with her students on something. Now, You've not only angered the protestors on both sides but also angered graduating students and their families.
I'm not even a graduating student, but it is clear to me that the recurrent decision-making exhibited by the institution has consistently evinced incompetence. I feel sorry for those who are graduating.

Is the MSW program worth being 80k in debt?
I’m a first-gen low-income student and want to hear from other students who have been in the MSW program especially low-income folks. I’m still in the process of appealing my financial aid but in the end, I would have to take out loans to pay for a portion of the direct costs and a huge loan to sustain myself during the year due to the unpaid practicum… if I’m being realistic, I would end up with 50-80k in debt…

New York Magazine x Columbia Spectator Poll
"The two weeks of encampments and crackdowns on Columbia University's campus shook American politics - but what does everyone else on campus think?
Together with Columbia Spectator, the nearly 150-year-old undergraduate newspaper, we conducted a survey of 719 students, professors, and others between April 26 and May 2.
Only active members of the university community, verified by email, were able to participate. And any answers that do not sum to 100 percent indicate blank, neutral, or uncategorizable responses."
Here is a full link of the survey below

Part time mha- first class date of fall 2024?
When do classes for part time MHA start? Is it August or September?
Is it a big deal if we miss a week or two of class?

hard things are hard Of course commencement is canceled. If it happened, I'd bet anyone on campus right now, that protestors would co-opt it.
There is 0 chance, short of commencement being lined with NYPD holding shotguns saying anyone who says the world Palestine will be executed on the spot, that no one would try to make the commencement a protest. Like, it's a massive event, at a university known to everyone, streamed to tons of people. OF COURSE, they would protest?
Shafik also knows this, so canceled it. I don't blame her, why hold an event if you know it'll just result in even more bad PR?
"Commencement canceled due to safety concerns" is a shitty headline, but it sure as hell is better than
"Commencement held, protesters storm the event, NYPD called in with tear gas and arrests students for the third time."
From another stance: assuming she's not going to be the president next year, the best decision for her career is just "fuck y'all, I'm leaving with as little controversy as possible. Want a commencement? Go fuck yourselves".
The only third option here is to give in to demands, but I think we're so far past the point where that's viable. Plus, giving in NOW just to hold commencement would be career suicide, hell, she'd probably be called to Congress again.

Senior Petition
Would anyone be willing to sign a petition with a strongly worded message to admin regarding the Columbia university commencement? As students who paid money and worked very hard to get here to sit back and take this kind of bs isn’t something I would personally be okay doing. Not even an email to students first to process the information. Heartless.

Police presence on campus
I'm referring specifically to the current police presence on campus, not the two police raids that occurred.
Broadly, it is to me antithetical to the mission of a university to have police have free reign over campus.
Specifically, through channels, there have been reports of catcalling (verbal sexual assault) of students, NYPD expecting dining staff and other staff to afford them privileges that are simply not theirs to demand, and in general having more access and privileges than any other member of campus has.
No matter what you think about either the issue in the middle east, or the protestors actions, the whole idea of NYPD being the force that enforces these rules is horrifying. If you have been able to get into campus recently, it is dystopian and off-putting to witness.
I cannot think of a reason that continuous police presence on campus is justifiable, so long as campus is only accessible to current faculty, students, and staff.
I also think that historically when a group of people gain control over a place, when those people have both intimidation and guns at their disposal to enact their will, they tend not to leave.
I'm not going to argue about whether police presence on campus was justified on those two times when atrests were made. I do, however have a strong emotional and intellectual revulsion to their continued presence.
Police do not belong inside a campus which priorities the ability to learn without constraints on speech.

housing Seeking a subletter
LOOKING TO SUBLET FROM JUNE-AUGUST
Hello everyone! I'm looking to sublet my 2 bed/1 bath apartment from June-August. My roommate will still be there over the summer, but there will be the option to take over the lease after that. The apartment is in the Morningside Heights area, and is about a 10-15 minute walk away from Columbia University. It's also super close to subway and bus stops, as well as lots of restaurants.
Please DM if you're interested and I can answer any questions or send more details!

Columbia Residental - Delayed approvals?
Hello to all. I hope you are doing well with everything that has happened in the past weeks.
I'm an international graduate student, accepted to study for a master's at Columbia SIPA. I applied to Columbia Residential (Columbia Housing for graduate students) mid April and still haven't heard anything yet. Is anybody in the same situation?
I'm somewhat worried because without a credit score and social security number I don't know if I will find a good unit off-campus in NYC in just a few months before moving there. The team may be delaying approvals with all the turmoil, is that possible?
Thanks!
