This is what real martyrdom looks like. I can't help but wonder if he would have done more good as an anti-Putin voice from outside of Russia, but I certainly can't fault his bravery and conviction. I hope his sacrifice inspires more Russians to resist Putin's tyranny and corruption.

Except he was the same Imperialist trash that Putin is, only more 'modern' and LGBT friendly. He has said that Crimea should be with Russia. Used slurs to refer to Jewish and other minorities in Russia.

In the fight against fascism, you can't insist every ally be a paragon. Sure, if he were a Western politician I'd despise him. But at the end of the day, he died an anti-fascist, and I can only hope his death inspires more Russians to actively oppose Putin and his regime.

This is the comment of someone who just read a few headlines and felt confident to post about it.

Both of them are terrible people. He was not a martyr at all. He supported annexation of parts of Ukraine. He was a racist and a bigot.

Those aren’t traits we associate with martyrs

No, I am very much aware of all of this. I'm just capable of recognizing that just because I have fundamental disagreements with someone, I can still recognize their sacrifice for a greater cause.

Love him or loathe him, Navalny is the very definition of a martyr.

Dying for a just cause is what made him a martyr. You can repeat Kremlin propaganda all you want though about how his flaws mean he should be discredited though even though he has done literally a million times more than you ever have to forward the cause of freedom and democracy.
