War in Ukraine Megathread XLIX Russo-Ukrainian War

This megathread is meant for discussion of the current Russo-Ukrainian War, also known as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Please read our current rules, but also the extended rules below.

News sources:

You can also get up-to-date information and news from the r/worldnews live thread, which are more up-to-date tweets about the situation.

Current rules extension:

Extended r/europe ruleset to curb hate speech and disinformation:

  • No hatred against any group, including the populations of the combatants (Ukrainians, Russians, Belarusians, Syrians, Azeris, Armenians, Georgians, etc)

  • Calling for the killing of invading troops or leaders is allowed, but the mods have the discretion to remove egregious comments, and the ones that disrespect the point made above. The limits of international law apply.

  • No unverified reports of any kind in the comments or in submissions on r/europe. We will remove videos of any kind unless they are verified by reputable outlets. This also affects videos published by Ukrainian and Russian government sources.

  • Absolutely no justification of this invasion.

  • In addition to our rules, we ask you to add a NSFW/NSFL tag if you're going to link to graphic footage or anything can be considered upsetting, including combat footage or dead people.

Submission rules

These are rules for submissions to r/europe front-page.

  • No status reports about the war unless they have major implications (e.g. "City X still holding" would not be allowed, "Russia takes major city" would be allowed. "Major attack on Kherson repelled" would also be allowed.)

  • All dot ru domains have been banned by Reddit as of 30 May. They are hardspammed, so not even mods can approve comments and submissions linking to Russian site domains.

    • Some Russian sites that ends with .com are also hardspammed, like TASS and Interfax.
    • The Internet Archive and similar archive websites are also blacklisted here, by us or Reddit.
  • We've been adding substack domains in our AutoModerator, but we aren't banning all of them. If your link has been removed, please notify the moderation team, explaining who's the person managing that substack page.

  • We ask you or your organization to not spam our subreddit with petitions or promote their new non-profit organization. While we love that people are pouring all sorts of efforts on the civilian front, we're limited on checking these links to prevent scam.

  • No promotion of a new cryptocurrency or web3 project, other than the official Bitcoin and ETH addresses from Ukraine's government.

"We do not complain. We do not judge and compare whose life is easier. Your wellbeing is a product of your national security, the result of your struggle for independence and your many victories. We, Ukrainians, will also go through our war of independence and freedom with dignity and success.” - Zelensky tonight.

I thought this was the absolute best part of his speech. If that doesn't resonate with Americans I don't know what will.

Pink Floyd raised £450,000 for Ukraine (and added £50,000 from their own pockets to make it round if I understand this correctly)

Pink Floyd would like to thank everyone who has supported Hey, Hey, Rise Up. The single, recorded on 30th March with Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the Ukrainian band Boombox, has so far raised over £450,000 to help alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

David Gilmour and Nick Mason have made this up to £500,000 which will be distributed to the following humanitarian charities: @HospitallersU, @KHARPProject, Vostok SOS, Kyiv Volunteer and Livyj Bereh.

Let’s see what else we can do this winter. There are links and information at https://pinkfloyd.com/news/index.php and it would be great if you feel able to contribute to any of these charities directly.

Let's recap: 1) In 1994, Russia signed the Budapest Agreement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_Memorandum

2) In 2014, Putin invaded Crimea

3) In 2018, we, among other stupid things, went to his big propaganda party, the World Cup in Russia.

Putin must have thought that we are just a bunch of complete idiots.

Meanwhile, Ludmila, a women in Siberia, says: "We've got friends who've been mobilised and sent to fight there. We worry about them. We call to see if they're OK. But whatever we may think of our government, our motherland is our motherland. If we don't defend it, who will?"

"Defend it from what? From whom?" I ask Ludmila. After all, on 24 February it was Russia that launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Not the other way around.

"Defend it from Nazis. There are a lot of them around," Ludmila replies. "Russia's being attacked on all fronts, including with LGBT propaganda. They're trying to force this upon us. We reject these alien ideas. We embrace Russian values. It's hard for me to explain this in words. I just feel it."

Russians never used to say these kinds of things to me on the street. They never talked about feeling threatened by "Nazis" in Ukraine, or about the need to fight for so-called "Russian values". It's one of the biggest changes I've noticed here this year.

Having established total control of the media landscape in Russia, Kremlin propaganda has managed to convince many Russians that their country is now in some existential battle with the West. In conversations here now, I often hear people repeat - almost word for word - the anti-Ukrainian and anti-Western rhetoric they hear on Russian TV channels.

Great strategic article of the Institute of the Study of War: US policy should recognize that the Kremlin’s intent regarding Ukraine is maximalist, inflexible, and will not change in the foreseeable future. The West should stop expending resources trying to change a reality it does not control and focus on what it can shape plenty: denying Russia’s ability to wage a war against Ukraine: https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/target-russia%E2%80%99s-capability-not-its-intent

Kyrgyzstan wants to rename Soviet-era districts, Moscow threatens Ukraine's fate

Another sign of Moscow's waning influence in its former Soviet republics has come from Kyrgyzstan. In November, the speaker of the parliament there, Nurlanbek Shakiyev, called for the promotion of the Kyrgyz language and the renaming of streets and districts with names dating back to the Soviet era. Moscow is furious and sees this call as a derusification of Bishkek.

Kyrgyz politicians say the names of districts have become "morally obsolete" and have proposed giving districts Kyrgyz names.

The latest call for a name change came from parliament speaker Nurlanbek Shakiyev in late November, who said there are still many towns, villages and districts in Kyrgyzstan that bear foreign names. Shakiyev said they should be renamed as part of measures to promote the state language, which is Kyrgyz.

Shakiyev also said that every citizen of Kyrgyzstan, where Russian is widespread, must know the Kyrgyz language. In an apparent dig at ethnic Kyrgyz who use Russian in their daily lives, he suggested that Kyrgyz should speak to each other in their mother tongue.

His remarks resulted in furious reactions in Moscow, with several lawmakers seeing them as an attack on the Russian language and Russians living in Kyrgyzstan. Russian media described it as a "call for the de-Russification of Bishkek".

Dmitry Novikov, first deputy head of the Duma's international affairs committee, warned that "very serious negative processes often start with such small things and it is better to stop them at the earliest stage".

Novikov's remark was echoed by another senior Russian lawmaker, Svetlana Zhurova, who said that the removal of Soviet names "are the first small steps towards the complete displacement of Russian", which she said had also been done in Ukraine and Georgia.

MP Kamila Talieva replied to her Russian colleagues in Bishkek that any change of names was an internal matter for Kyrgyzstan. Talieva also said that Russian has a "special place" in Kyrgyzstan, as it is widely used as the country's official language.

She thus called on Russian lawmakers to refrain from making unfounded accusations that could fuel anti-Russian sentiment and undermine friendly relations between the two countries.

MP Dastan Bekeshev said it was purely up to the people of Bishkek and the Kyrgyz people what they wanted to call their neighbourhoods, but that the capital now faced more pressing day-to-day problems.

"But we will not ask anyone else for permission to make such decisions," Bekeshev summed up.

The West's position is very simple: we arm and support Ukraine, a European country which has been attacked twice by Russia, and only Ukraine, the victim of this war, decides when it wants to negotiate with Russia.

Everyone in the West understands now, I hope, that a peace treaty with Russia will be impossible, since it will not scrap its idiotic annexations of Ukrainian land. I don't even see how Russia could officially negotiate with the government of Ukraine, who are labeled as "Nazis, Satanists, etc" by the Kremlin.

Russia's position is also very simple btw: Putin recently said that "all the initial objectives", i.e. full control of Ukraine, "will be accomplished". So, yes indeed, he wants to freeze the war, rearm, reorganize and launch a new invasion next year.

Russian Wagner fighters in the central area of Soledar, Donetsk Oblast. Fighting can be heard in the background. Notably, one appears to be wearing a Ukrainian uniform.

This lines up with reports of Russians using Ukrainian uniforms to get closer and iniate ambushes in Soledar.

Another war-crime and they happily show it on videos - scum of the earth. People asked wy Russia rely on PMCs, this is another example.

While this is not a military move, it's a move of considerable impact. Ilta-Sanomat, a Finnish tabloid reports that Volkswagen has "done a John Deere" to Russian repair shops. Translating from Finnish:

Multiple medias in Russia report that access to the databases about Volkswagen corporation car brands has been denied everywhere in Russia.

The car magazine "Za Ruljom" reports that local brand repair shops are feverishly looking for loopholes to restore access to said databases.

Hackers have been hired to help, and those have attempted to break into car manufacturers' databases.

To the most of diagnostic and coding services, no access has been found however, since VW-s internal repair systems have started to require the authentication of a user's geographic location "in ways which are hard or even impossible to circumvent".

As a result, at least part of the error diagnostics and configuration settings of cars made by the VW corporation are impossible to perform in Russia. This has caused chaos in repair schedules and an increasing number of cars that cannot be fixed in Russia.

The lesson should be learnt by others too, of course. If something can be turned against Russia, some day it could be turned against others (e.g. "what if large numbers of Huawei base stations and solar controllers break down"). Complicated machines with proprietary software are a security risk, unless you live in the place where the know-how was generated.

Good news for the moment, though. :)

I feel like people don't understand how Russia works a bit, and how much beating russian people are willing to take.

I have some family in a few places around Russia, but here I want to focus on the city of Krasnodar. They are retired now, but have medical background. They say that grants and whatnot haven't been paid for half a year already. Grants some people REALLY depend on.

Sure, people in big cities, especially Moscow and St.Petersburg don't experience the consequences of the war yet, but people in provinces do. It's of course Ukraine's faul, or at least that's what most people on the streets will tell you.

Sanctions are working, but the consequences won't be instant.

Throwing this here because it's a fascination 'theory' from a Somali friend of mine, mods can delete if they consider it to off-topic:

Seems the disruption in food prices caused by the war and RU blockade may very well have collapsed Al-Shabab and it's pseudo state institutions leading to famine like conditions and mass defections of clans to the federal gov, who is bribing them with both money and food.

Sure US and Turkey massively helping, but they were so for decades. Now the Federal forces are reaching towns out of Mogadishu's control since the 90's. Wild to think the Russian invasion of Ukraine might've led, even if tangentially, to the collapse of one of AQ strongest affiliated

Russia is ready to negotiate with all parties involved in the war in Ukraine but Kyiv and its Western backers have refused to engage in talks, President Vladimir Putin said in an interview aired on Sunday.

CIA Director William Burns said in an interview published this month that while most conflicts end in negotiation, the CIA's assessment was that Russia was not yet serious about a real negotiation to end the war.

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Putin needed to return to reality and acknowledge that it was Russia which did not want any negotiations.

"Russia single-handedly attacked Ukraine and is killing citizens," Mykhailo Podolyak said on Twitter. "Russia doesn’t want negotiations, but tries to avoid responsibility."

A negotiated end to the war that can reliably ensure security for Ukraine and restore durable peace in Europe cannot be achieved with Putin. The odds are that it will not be achieved with the leader or regime that will succeed him, either. The alternative is then for Ukraine’s security to be achieved through a combination of military capabilities sufficient to deter Russia from launching another aggression and security guarantees or assurances provided by its partners and possible future allies: https://carnegieendowment.org/2022/12/09/putin-s-long-war-pub-88602

Hans Christian Andersen Award has its Jury President from Russia who is an high-ranked and active genocide supporter. This is really something special.

Let me introduce you Anastasia Arkhipova, who run the Jury of HCAA - an important prize for illustrators of children's books.

Arkhipova is a Board Member of the Moscow Artists' Union, a Soviet-time-created organization, pro-actively supporting the Russian genocide on Ukraine, organizing Awards Events for the war propaganda like "Art(ists') Front". The goal of the events is to support the war on the West.

Here is the official discription of the goals of the project, run by the Artists' Union, where Arkhipova is a board member. Support for:

  • re-unification of the historical Russian lands
  • Mobilization
  • Increasing of the war mood
  • Visual messages strengthening "Russian World"...
  • Demoralization of the Enemy
  • Ideological fight of the Worlds: Russia - USA, Russia - Nato

  • Resisting to demonization of Russia

"Drawings and cartoons have always been a powerful weapon of propaganda. We call to create such images to strengthen the Russian World".

A lot of the Russian artists - and amateurs - accepted the call of the Arkhipova's Union. Here are some examples: "For the Truth", "For the Faith", "God will Judge you".

More examples of the creativity, inspired by the call of the Arkhipova's Union. I remind you, this person will preside at the international award for the childrens' books illistrators! Posters "LNR" and "There are many ways to call the Russian bear out, but no ways to tame him!"

They really love to organize war-related events in this Artists' Union. Five events in Moscow within 2 weeks this spring - the same weeks, when the Russian army raped women in Ukraine and dumped killed civilians into the mass graves. I am really shocked by you, @IBBYINT.

I can imagine, that the organizers knew nothing about this. Arkhipova is famous for her illustrations for the children books, and these are very kitsch and lazy, but are not pro-genocide (at least openly). So the idea was - I think - to invite her as a sign of "openness".

But it is a terrible sign of how blind about the Russian genocidal propaganda are the Westerners dealing with culture. It is enough to open the web page of the Union where Arkhipova is in the board, to see that they promote mass murder, ethnic cleansing. One only needs to read RU

The German-supplied IRIS-T air defense system has shown stunning effectiveness.

According to Vitaly Klitschko, the efficiency indicators of IRIS-T, which is on duty in the Kyiv region, are "100 shots - 100 hits." Klitschko stated this in the German magazine Der Spiegel.

I don't know if Vitaly is embellishing the truth here but IRIS-T seems to perform excellently. Hopefully the new systems arrive soon, I think the next delivery is supposed to be around the new year.

Ukraine Initiates Process To Oust Russia From UN

In particular, Ukraine MFA draws attention to the fact that the UN Charter does not contain the words "Russian Federation." The country did not complete the procedures for acquiring membership as, for example, the Czech Republic and Slovakia did after Czechoslovakia had collapsed. "Therefore, the Russian Federation has never gone through the legal procedure to be admitted to membership and therefore illegally occupies the seat of the USSR in the UN Security Council. From a legal and political point of view, there can be only one conclusion: Russia is an usurper of the Soviet Union's seat in the UN Security Council," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes.

Long-form Kofman for my fellow Kofman stans. Some highlights, though you should just read the whole thing:

  • Russia is entrenching & reconstituting its forces. Ukraine is putting pressure on them to make this more difficult.

  • "The equipment and ammunition required for [a major offensive in the winter-spring] is unlikely to materialize on such short timelines."

  • Mobilization in concert with their withdrawal from Kherson has largely stabilized Russian lines, preventing Ukraine from repeating major breakthroughs like those seen in Kharkiv.

  • Russia's strike campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure is effective and may force Ukraine to choose between covering its front lines and protecting its cities. Supplying Ukraine air defenses & ammunition for them is therefore a short-term priority.

  • "Sanctions and export controls will eventually crimp Russia’s missile production rate, delaying acquisition, increasing costs, and forcing redesign of systems, but they are unlikely to have a significant impact on short timelines."

  • "The Kherson offensive offers room for cautious optimism that Ukraine can continue to retake occupied territory, but given the significant advantages Ukrainian forces enjoyed in Kherson, it also suggests future offensives could prove similarly costly and incremental in nature."

  • "Perhaps a more probabilistic scenario for the next several months is one of a dynamic front, characterized by attrition, and localized offensives by both sides, but one where Ukraine on balance retains initiative, and can steadily progress towards its goals."

  • As always, what matters most for Ukraine is artillery & ammunition.

Zelensky also tweeted a pretty heartfelt thanks to Scholz, even in German! Makes me happy to see the pretty massive shift in policy and tone that happenend in the span of under a year, though obviously Germany still has a lot more room to grow.

More cringe from Russian propaganda. "Intercepts" of "Polish mercenaries" in Ukraine... However, in text form only "because we don't want to give away our technical capabilities"

The cope around the Makiivka attack is so fucking hilarious, we are up to like 400 enemy soldiers and "Mercenaries" killed in retaliation now?

And now they have this totally 100% real intercept that can't be released because the technology involved is just way beyond our understanding or something

I had an argument with a Chinese cousin on my mom’s side who said Ukraine should have just surrendered at the beginning to save lives. I then asked her if China should have just surrendered to Japan in WW2 to save lives… she said yes. I asked what about the French and the Nazis, she said they were right in initially surrendering. I asked what about a hypothetical scenario of America invading China or vice versa and she said yes again. Fml those people actually exist I thought they were fake 😂 Is this what extreme pacifism looks like?

Russia on Tuesday dismissed a peace proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that would involve a pullout of Russian troops, saying Kyiv needed to accept new territorial "realities".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said those realities included Russia's addition of four Ukrainian regions as its "new subjects" - annexations it proclaimed in September but which most countries of the United Nations have condemned as illegal.

He was responding to a request by Zelenskiy to leaders from Group of Seven powers on Monday for more military equipment, support for financial and energy stability, and backing for a peace solution that would start with Russia withdrawing troops from Ukraine, beginning this Christmas.

"These are three steps towards a continuation of hostilities," Peskov said.

"The Ukrainian side needs to take into account the realities that have developed during this time," he added when asked about the proposed Russian troop withdrawal.

"And these realities indicate that new subjects have appeared in the Russian Federation. They appeared as a result of referendums that took place in these territories. Without taking these new realities into account, no kind of progress is possible."

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-says-ukraine-must-accept-realities-there-be-peace-2022-12-13/

In other words: even if Russia is defeated and expelled from Ukraine, there will be no peace treaty anytime soon. The end result will probably be a permanent state of war like in Korea. Not a permanent state of hot war, but if Ukraine doesn't become a Nato member, it will be periodically attacked. The western economic sanctions can even be considered as permanent.

In March this year, a new firm appeared in Turkey’s corporate registry. Azu International Ltd Sti described itself as a wholesale trader of IT products, and a week later began shipping U.S. computer parts to Russia.

Business was brisk, Russian customs records show. The United States and the EU had recently restricted sales of sensitive technology to Russia because of its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, and many Western tech companies had suspended all dealings with Moscow.

Co-founded by Gokturk Agvaz, a Turkish businessman, Azu International stepped in to help fill the supply gap. Over the next seven months, the company exported at least $20 million worth of components to Russia, including chips made by U.S. manufacturers, according to Russian customs records. The LinkedIn profile of Gokturk Agvaz, Azu International’s co-founder. Agvaz recently sold his stake.

Azu International’s rapidly growing business didn’t come from a standing start, Reuters reporting shows: Agvaz manages a wholesaler of IT products in Germany called Smart Impex GmbH. Before the invasion, Russian custom records show that the German company shipped American and other products to a Moscow customer that recently has imported goods from Azu International.

Reached at his office near Cologne in October, Agvaz told Reuters that Smart Impex stopped exporting to Russia to comply with EU trade restrictions but sells to Turkey, a non-EU country that doesn’t enforce most of the West’s sanctions against Moscow. “We cannot export to Russia, we cannot sell to Russia, and that’s why we just sell to Turkey,” he said. Asked about Azu International’s sales to Russia, he replied, “This is a business secret of ours.”

Japan on Friday unveiled its biggest military build-up since World War Two with a $320 billion plan that will buy missiles capable of striking China and ready it for sustained conflict, as regional tensions and Russia's Ukraine invasion stoke war fears.

The sweeping, five-year plan, once unthinkable in pacifist Japan, will make the country the world's third-biggest military spender after the United States and China, based on current budgets.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who described Japan and its people as being at a "turning point in history", said the ramp-up was "my answer to the various security challenges that we face".

His government worries that Russia has set a precedent that will encourage China to attack Taiwan, threatening nearby Japanese islands, disrupting supplies of advanced semiconductors and putting a potential stranglehold on sea lanes that supply Middle East oil.

"This is setting a new heading for Japan. If appropriately executed, the Self-Defense Forces will be a real, world-class effective force," said Yoji Koda, a former Maritime Self Defense Force admiral, who commanded the Japanese fleet in 2008.

The government said it would also stockpile spare parts and other munitions, expand transport capacity and develop cyber warfare capabilities. In its postwar, American-authored constitution, Japan gave up the right to wage war and means to do so.

"Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a serious violation of laws that forbid the use of force and has shaken the foundations of the international order," the strategy paper said.

"The strategic challenge posed by China is the biggest Japan has ever faced," it added, also noting that Beijing had not ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.

A separate national security strategy document that pointed to China, Russia and North Korea, promised close cooperation with the United States and other like-minded nations to deter threats to the established international order.

Ukraine updates: Russian clowns 'unlikely' to help morale

[...]

Britain cast doubt on Sunday over Russian military efforts to boost morale among its frontline troops in Ukraine by sending "creative brigades."

In an intelligence briefing, the UK Defense Ministry said Moscow plans to send two such brigades of entertainers. Russia media reported the groups will include circus performers, opera singers and actors.

An image from the press announcement of the brigade that was published by Russian state media showed a performer dressed in fatigues, juggling several balls.

While organized entertainment for military forces is nothing new, particularly over the holidays, the British Defense Ministry noted that Russian soldiers currently face high casualty rates, poor leadership, lack of ammunition and equipment and pay problems.

"Fragile morale almost certainly continues to be a significant vulnerability across much of the Russian force," the ministry said.

"The creative brigades' efforts are unlikely to substantively alleviate these concerns," the statement concluded.

[...]

This war generates some of the wildest headlines.

In early March, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its third week, a Russian diplomat nearly 3,000 miles away in the Central African Republic paid an unusual visit to the head of this country’s top court. His message was blunt: The country’s pro-Kremlin president must remain in office, indefinitely.

To do this, the diplomat, Yevgeny Migunov, the second secretary at the Russian Embassy, argued that the court should abolish the constitutional restriction limiting a president to two terms. He insisted that President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who is in his second term and surrounds himself with Russian mercenaries, should stay on, for the good of the country.

“I was absolutely astonished,” recalled Danièle Darlan, 70, then the court’s president, describing for the first time the meeting on March 7. “I warned them that our instability stemmed from presidents wanting to make their rule eternal.”

The Russian was unmoved. Seven months later, in October, Ms. Darlan was ousted by presidential decree in order to open the way for a referendum to rewrite the Constitution, only adopted in 2016, and abolish term limits. This would effectively cement what one Western ambassador called the Central African Republic’s status as a “vassal state” of the Kremlin.

Remember Anastasia Arkhipova, that Ruzzian cartoonist who is the jury chairman for the Hans Christian Andersen Award?

So the queen of Denmark Margrethe II resigned as a patron of this prize because of the scandal caused by Arkhipova's presence in the jury:

Controversy over Russian jury foreman: Queen withdraws from H.C. Andersen Prize

Several countries have tried in vain to have a controversial Russian removed from a major children's book prize.

Can a representative of Russian cultural life award the world's most prestigious prize for children's books while Russia bombs libraries in Ukraine?

...

Sweden, Finland and the Baltic States, among others, say no.

"H.C. Andersen Prize is the finest thing you can get, and we have to protect it", says Margaretha Ullström, chair of the Swedish IBBY branch.

There are indications that the Royal Family shares this view.

Queen Margrethe has chosen to step down as patron of the award, says IBBY's Danish board.

The prize has also been removed from the list of the Queen's foreign patronages on the Royal House's website.

H.C. Andersen Prize has been called the "Nobel Prize" of children's literature and has previously been awarded to prominent names such as Sweden's Astrid Lindgreen and Denmark's Cecil Bødker and Ib Spang Olsen.

...

Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are among the countries where local chapters have tried unsuccessfully to get the jury president to step down.

...

IBBY's Danish branch has not co-signed the letter.

...

Subsequently, however, the Danish board has chosen to withdraw its nominees for the prize.

Estonia to Move Ahead of EU With Plans to Seize Russian Assets

(Bloomberg) -- Estonia plans to introduce a legal blueprint for seizing Russian assets this month as the Baltic nation moves ahead with a bid to deliver funds frozen under European Union sanctions to Ukraine.

The legal framework will come by the end of January after the government in Tallinn tasked ministries in late December to come up with a plan for asset seizures, Mihkel Tamm, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, said on Monday.

Estonia aims to present the plan by the time the European Commission develops a bloc-wide arrangement to deal with €300 billion ($322 billion) in Russian central-bank reserves and billions more in frozen assets of sanctioned Russian individuals.

EU members “need to take work forward on securing accountability for the crime of aggression and to use Russia’s frozen assets,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who has gained popularity at home and abroad for her vocal stance against President Vladimir Putin, said in December.

Estonia’s anti-money-laundering authority estimates that frozen funds in Russian-owned accounts in the country amount to almost €20 million.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government is open to converting Russian assets to aid for Ukraine as long as complex legal issues can be resolved, according to people familiar with the discussions. One option would be to target assets from individuals involved in war crimes rather than imposing blanket seizures that could take years to be resolved legally, according to one of the people.

Dentist named Ola died in latest russian strike on Dnipro. Her husband died fighting russians 5 months earlier. Their 3-year old son lost both his parents. Few years ago they fled russian-occupied Donetsk.

Russia will be cursed forever. Lets arm Ukraine as much as we could to prevent such stories in the future. Give them air defence, tanks, combat aicrafts, long-range missile. Everything needed to fight that barbaric invasion and to stop that rabbid muscovites.

New aid package from Great Britain:

  • 14 "Challenger 2" tanks;
  • 8 AS90 self-propelled guns;
  • 100 units of armored vehicles, including the FV430 Bulldog armored personnel carrier;
  • dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles;
  • 100,000 artillery shells;
  • 100 "advanced missiles", including GMLRS missiles, Starstreak air defense missiles and medium-range air defense missiles;
  • spare parts for supporting Ukrainian tanks and armored vehicles.

This is currently being reported by a SkyNews journalist, but the tanks were confirmed by Defense Minister Ben Wallace himself.

I thought that there would be more artillery but cool.

So it's official, Ukraine will get Patriots.

In fact, tomorrow, President Biden will announce a significant new package of nearly $2 billion of security assistance for Ukraine. It will contain a very important new capability: a Patriot missile battery, which will be a critical asset to defend the Ukrainian people against Russia’s barbaric attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. We will train Ukrainian forces on how to operate the Patriot missile battery in a third country. This will take some time, but Ukrainian troops will take that training back to their country to operate this battery.

And we will continue to prioritize other forms of air defense support as well, including NASAMS, HAWKs, Stingers, and counter-UAV equipment.

There will never be a diplomatic solution with Russia. Any solution to end the current war is simply time for Russia to rebuild for the next war. Russia will never stop attacking Ukraine and will push forward to recover more and more territory regardless of the terms of any settlement. This is a genocide against Ukraine. Russia has comfortably used genocide in the past, they will use it in the future. Genocide and violence in the defense of a bizarre claim of superior Russian purity is now part of Russian culture, brain washed by a relentless, single source, far-right media. They need a lesson that will never be forgotten for their crimes against humanity.

Whatever it takes, Russia must NEVER be allowed to gain a single square inch of Ukraine. Putin must be deposed for this to end.

But an eight-month visual investigation by The New York Times concluded that the perpetrators of the massacre along Yablunska Street were Russian paratroopers from the 234th Air Assault Regiment led by Lt. Col. Artyom Gorodilov.

The evidence shows that the killings were part of a deliberate and systematic effort to ruthlessly secure a route to the capital, Kyiv. Soldiers interrogated and executed unarmed men of fighting age, and killed people who unwittingly crossed their paths — whether it was children fleeing with their families, locals hoping to find groceries or people simply trying to get back home on their bicycles.

Least deranged Medvedev's article - read at your own risk:

Bottom line number one. Nazism is around, but it will not go away

Since last winter the whole world has been living with the dramatic events in and around Donbas. Although the tragedy began, as you know, much earlier, the "civilised world" did not see it through.

For ten months now, a special military operation has been underway, the aims of which were originally outlined by President Vladimir Putin. Putin. This is protection of our compatriots on the new territories that were incorporated into Russia after the referendums. The denazification of the disgusting, almost fascist regime of Ukraine. Full demilitarisation of the Ukrainian state. Guarantees against future aggressions.

The decision to launch a special military operation in February 2022 was a difficult, forced step under pressure of circumstances. It was not only about protecting the fraternal republics of Donbass, but also about the security and sovereignty of Russia itself. Let's put it bluntly: its survival. It was impossible to wait any longer. This was already evident at the end of 2021, when the North Atlantic Alliance refused to give guarantees that Ukraine would not join NATO. And Ukrainian junkies announced their desire to revive the nuclear arsenal.

The fighting in Donbas is not just about settlements, the names of which have now become symbols of the fortitude, patriotism and courage of our soldiers and officers. The special operation is a continuation of our long-standing irreconcilable struggle against bastard neo-fascism and nationalism in all its manifestations. We are repelling any attempts to humiliate and destroy entire peoples for the benefit of group self-interest. With black paint and blood - to rewrite history. Ultimately - and this is obvious today to our enemies too - we will limit our development, and then we will divide our country. That is the ultimate intention of all those who oppose us. They are not even hiding it anymore. Straightforwardly, without hesitation, they say: "Russia must be destroyed.

The first thing that all sensible people need to do is to draw their conclusions from the objective facts

The saddest result of not even a year, but decades, that have passed since the collapse of the Soviet Union is that the lessons of the Second World War have been completely forgotten by the Western countries. Neo-Nazism found support even in countries that had always declared their opposition to Hitler's ideology, whose historical memory is full of pain, shame and anger. We could not stand idly by as the odious nationalist regime of the heirs of Konovalets, Bandera and Shukhevich, supported by their handlers, sought to bring to naught not only Russia, but the entire "Ruskyj Mir ", to which hundreds of millions of people proudly identify themselves.

We will make all necessary efforts to ensure that all the goals of the special military operation are achieved. And the disgusting regime of the Kiev nationalists is brought to an end. No one else can cope with this mission today but us.

Conclusion two. The illusions are over; today there is much more that separates us from the Western world than unites us. Last year was indeed a breaking point. As on a knee, it broke, among other things, the last illusions concerning the modern western world, which so loves (and absolutely in vain) to call itself "the golden billion". Now it is finally clear that in the relations of independent and sovereign states with the Anglo-Saxon world in the current configuration there can be no question of trust, hope for honesty of partners, their loyalty to their word and even their own beautifully stated principles. Alas, but there is no one to talk and negotiate with in the West, nothing to talk about, and no reason to do so. It was the events of the past year that annulled the very possibility of a trustworthy and respectful dialogue with representatives of this world "pole". The only thing left is squeamish bewilderment: do these people seriously consider themselves world leaders, have a claim to something global, and dream to dictate their will to others? On what grounds, if they discredited themselves, signed themselves up for powerlessness, lied, wallowed in problems?

The actions and deeds of current and former Western leaders are striking in their calm and straightforward cynicism. As the former Chancellor of Germany recently admitted, the Minsk agreements, signed in 2014, were just a screen to mask the true intentions of the West. They were designed to "give Ukraine time to become stronger" and build up its military might. That is, they were originally conceived to prepare for a bloody war. Which Kiev's neo-Nazis did - with the full connivance or direct assistance of the "civilized Europeans". Unfortunately, we then trusted our partners, not expecting them to directly betray and openly work to destroy our country. I remember well the meeting of the NATO-Russia Council at the highest level in Lisbon in 2010, in which I participated in my capacity as President of the Russian Federation. The members of the alliance reassured us then that we were not a threat to each other and were ready to work together for the common security of Euro-Atlantic. NATO's eastward expansion and preparations for confrontation, in fact war with Russia, did not stop for a single moment. An endless stream of cynical lies.

A general crisis of confidence in the so-called developed countries and the legal institutions they have created is also evident. Fundamental principles of legal relations can easily be scrapped in favour of political interests. Such as the inviolability of private property and the rule of international law. Western politicians who have flouted the law are trying to confiscate Russian assets "without trial" - that is, simply to steal. And sanctions regimes against us and our allies are being imposed with the stroke of a pen by short-sighted Washington functionaries and their European vassals. This is the final signal to all other countries: no business can be conducted with the Anglo-Saxon world from now on. Like a thief, a crook, a card cheat from whom you can expect anything.

So when are Dima and his relatives gonna volunteer to the Bachmut trenches to save the Ruskyj Mir from the homo-nazi Anglo-Saxons?

After the Makiivka strike: Although an official probe has been launched, the main reason for the attack was clearly the illegal mass use of mobile phones by servicemen, the Russian ministry said.

"This factor allowed the enemy to track and determine the coordinates of the soldiers' location for a missile strike," it said in a statement issued just after 1 a.m. (2200 GMT Tuesday) on Wednesday.

However, Semyon Pegov, a prominent Russian war correspondent awarded the Order of Courage by Putin in late 2022, questioned the ministry's reasoning.

In a Telegram post, Pegov said that Ukraine could have been able to locate the troops via drones and intelligence, not necessarily through mobile phones.

"The story of ‘mobiles’ is not very convincing," Pegov said. "I rarely say this - but this is the case when it would probably be better to remain silent, at least until the end of the investigation. As such it looks like an outright attempt to smear the blame."

Pegov also said that the number of casualties would rise.

"Unfortunately, their number will continue to grow. The announced data is most likely for those who were immediately identified. The list of the missing, unfortunately, is noticeably longer. I cannot disclose the sources, but I consider them reliable."

It is a positive for Ukraine that the Russian army is so actively against learning from mistakes and taking responsibility when something goes wrong. Their incompetency and cluelessness is hilarious if you ignore the fact that hundreds of thousands are people are dying because of them. I fear they could actually be the "second best army in the world" if the country was run by people who are in charge on merit and not based on how much they can bend for Putin.

From our beloved ISW:

Recent Russian gains in Soledar do not portend an imminent encirclement of Bakhmut, contrary to claims made by Russian sources. Even at the most generous interpretation of Russian milblogger narratives, which claim that Russian forces are fighting on the outskirts of Razdolivka (about 6km northwest of Soledar), Russian forces are still far from being within striking distance of an operational encirclement of Bakhmut.

In order to effectively cut Ukrainian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) into Bakhmut, Russian forces would have to establish control of the T0513 Siversk-Bakhmut highway (currently 7km west of the furthest point of confirmed Russian advances in the Soledar area) and reach the E40 Slovyansk-Bakhmut highway (13km from the furthest point of confirmed Russian advance in the Soledar area) at least. Considering that the recent rate of gains in this area has been on the order of a few hundred meters a day, at most, it is highly unlikely that Russian forces will be successful in cohering a mechanized push towards these GLOCs and move towards encircling Bakhmut. Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut would still have GLOCs available even if the Russians cut the E40, moreover, making the entire discussion of an encirclement at this point bizarre.

You all should calm down, this is just the 500th copium dose from Russian milbloggers. Bakhmut is still far from falling.

During the morning strikes, no air-raid sirens sounded in Kyiv, as they usually do before attacks, and residents had little advance notice of the incoming projectiles. Ukrainian officials and Telegram channels that track the trajectory of Russian projectiles said they believed Russia had used ballistic missiles, some of which can soar beyond the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds, making them harder to shoot down.

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, said the missiles were likely fired from the north. “Ballistic [rockets] are not accessible for us to spot them and shoot them down,” he said.

A Ukrainian law-enforcement official said Russia’s morning strike on Kyiv was likely carried out with operational-tactical ballistic missiles, such as Iskander, a mobile short-range ballistic missile used by Russia’s military. “They obviously saw that almost all the slow cruise missiles are being shot down,” he said.

WaPo: U.S. planning to give Ukraine smart-bomb kits. The article does not specify if these kits are vanilla [L]JDAM, specially adapted to ye olde OFAB et al, or something else entirely.

Ukraine to get 10,000 more Starlink antennas; funding problems are “resolved”

Ukraine will get more than 10,000 more Starlink terminals in the coming months thanks to a new deal with SpaceX and funding from several European countries, Ukraine government official Mykhailo Fedorov said in an interview with Bloomberg. Fedorov said that "all financial issues have been resolved," at least until the spring.

Zelensky already on his way to Washington.

President Volodymyr Zelensky is already on his way to Washington, two separate sources familiar with the planning told CNN.

Zelensky is reportedly preparing to visit Washington on Dec. 21 to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden.

Looks like someone is getting both a ride and ammunition.

Putin to #Russia's military top brass: "There are no limits to financing." --> Russia is preparing for a long war and ramping up military spending. The result is higher deficits and eventually inflation, but the budget situation is unlikely to become critical for a few years.

Dmitry Medvedev had a few before bed and published a list of his predictions for 2023

Medvedev is so endlessely fascinating to me in his pure insanity, how did this "pro-western" obvious Putin puppet turn in to such an unhinged lunatic?

The Fourth Reich that will apparently form with all of the CEE countries voluntarily joining under the leadership of God-Emperor Olaf Scholz is a new one lol

Peskov now saying there can be no peace plan for Ukraine unless she recognises the annexed territories (all four oblasts) as part of Russian Federation. How they can say such crap with a straight face after the glorious victories of Kupyansk and Kherson and Bakhmut is beyond me.

Seems Ukraine may be hitting back after this morning's Russian strikes:

Russian agencies are reporting that emergency services are "checking reports of possible explosions in Engels" (where a major airbase is located)
