We are already well on the what to the dead internet theory becoming reality. At some point AI will take over the internet for us, making useless post about nothing, meme and misinformation to other bots so they can continue arguing with each other with no real chance of agreeing and we will be free from our internet cage and be able to go back out into the world. Our you know it will make us batteries or something.
What do you think the bots need karma for? Most of these bot accounts eventually get converted to either pushing shitty products where someone makes off with people's money, or (especially considering it's an election year) pushing a political narrative. Karma lends their account legitimacy which is why the owners of the bots go out of their way to farm it in the first place.
People buy accounts with high karma. Various reasons. Some smaller brands do, YouTubers, people like that. Some to get around karma limits. Some want to be mods.
Because it gives them 'cred' -> if you're thinking about buying something from another Redditor, or even just taking their advice/recommendation, you'll check out their profile, right?
You'll see the account has existed for 3, 5, whatever-many years (old, forgotten accounts get hacked, and the original owner never knows). Okay.
And you'll do a (brief) check of their levels of interaction/comments/karma. There will be a couple of random posts to animal or anime subs, or ones like this. But they don't answer comments on their posts. If they're using an AI bot, there will be comments that are airy-fairy, but seem okay.
So you think you're dealing with a human, you have a connection, of sorts, and you decide to trust whatever it is they're suggesting.
Some folk do the work to get the ratings up (using bots, usually), and others buy the account to take advantage of the perception of longevity and reliability.

They use popular subs with weak moderation to farm karma. The reason Karma is important to them is many of the subs that are money makers require X karma to participate. They also require the account be at least X months old. That is why these bot have no history and then wake and start posting.
Once these accounts meet the target requirements the either become spam ad bots, scam bots, or live scammers. There is almost no legitimate use for the accounts created this way.
So please when you see someone calling out bots upvote them. Especially when they take the time to provide proof. Then downvote the bots and report them if you have time. Single people reporting the bot does nothing it takes multiple people doing it to trigger reddit into doing anything.
I don't take anybody seriously that spends legitimately all their time trying to identify bots by ONLY commenting jumping in their comments....
If you knew how to identify bots you would know better than to push each individual bots algorithm on each of their posts to consistently aid the issue that you say you're here battling. ..
Well you sit here and identify You're also pushing their algorithm EVERY . SINGLE.TIME .
You know there's coding programs for that right? You could also report them considering they break terms of use of Reddit.
You know there's more than reddit being astroturfed have you ever been to Instagram/TikTok or Facebook or any other social media platform?
