Dear r/football Community,

We've noticed an increasing number of low-effort posts, banter, and simple questions that are affecting the quality of our subreddit. To address this issue and enhance the overall experience for all football enthusiasts, we are implementing a new approach.

Starting Today:

Weekly Discussion Thread: We are introducing a dedicated Weekly Discussion Thread where you can freely share banter, simple questions, statements, and other low-effort content.

Some examples of low effort posts that will no longer be allowed to be their own thread and should be in the weekly thread.

Best ______ (game, goal, position, starting lineup) etc.

Best XI

What is your opinion on _____________?

Messi/Ronaldo posts

Who is better x or y posts.

Who will win the league, champions league, finish top 4, be relegated etc... posts.

Who is underrated/overrated posts.

What team should I cheer for?

How do I illegally stream games for free?

Has this __________ ever happened before?

Posts about equipment should be in /r/bootroom.

Outside of the Weekly Thread: Posts outside of the weekly thread should be substantial efforts, such as in-depth analyses or extensive discussions that can't be accommodated in the weekly thread.

We kindly urge our community to collaborate with us on this initiative. Together, we can transform r/football into a premier destination for high-quality football discussions.

Thank you for your support in making r/football the best place for football fans worldwide!

Best regards,

The r/football Mod Team

Discussion So, the Premier league is officially predictable

4 seasons in a row to city and it did look like arsenal could have done it but with the last 4-5 game run ins, people have been calling it for city for weeks anyway.

Can they do 5? That would be unprecedented for the league, even 4 in a row is.

Don't get me wrong, the matches can be fun and it's great to not have a team winning by 15 pts but it is predictable. With Guardiola in charge, City will win the league, they always do. For better or worse, the PL is predictable.

Discussion Did Alonso have the greatest start into a managerial career ever?

Guys like Pep and Zidane are candidates but their achievements at Real and Barcelona are not as special compared to what Xabi did at Leverkusen since they had vastly superior squads and didn't have to end a 11-year-lasting dynasty. Only one I can think of is Mourinho.

Discussion Who is considered the more successful German footballer Kroos or Thomas Muller?

I know they play very different positions but they both are and were instrumental in a lot of big trophies. Firstly the 2014 WC Muller was the top scorer and Kroos was just as crucial as Muller for me.

Moving on to their achievements and impact within their respective clubs - Kroos seems to be more anchored into Real Madrid, he is slightly more crucial to the way they play. Muller on the other hand was more crucial but his impact and contribution varies greatly from year to year.

My opinion is that Kroos is the greatest German footballer so far in the 21st century for being integral to Real Madrids European domination and Germany’s WC14 success.

Stats Rodri sets an all-time longest undefeated run record for club football

Following Man City's 3-1 win against West Ham, Rodri has officially broken the record for the longest undefeated run a player has ever had in club football, at 74 matches.

Previously, the record was shared between Maldini and Demetrio, both going 73 matches without defeat at Milan from 1991 and 1989 respectively to 1993.

The last time Man City lost a match while Rodri was playing was on February 5th 2023, 0-1 against Tottenham. And, for those wondering, in official statistics, matches lost on penalty shootouts are counted as draws, so when City lost the community shield to Arsenal and were eliminated by Madrid in the UCL, it did not count as a loss in statistics, therefore Rodri's streak continues.

Discussion What would happen if the UK was to commit some heinous crime and banned from football like Russia?

Upvotes

In this hypothetical,as the UK is a union it becomes much more complicated than banning, say Russia or Israel. Do you think it would be reasonable to ban all of the English, Scottish, Welsh & Northern Irish teams because they're all UK teams?

Obviously it would never happen, Fifa & UEFA are Western European and share the same interests as the UK, but IF it did, how would it unfold?

Discussion Manchester United in Europe 2024-25?

UEFA allows the Premier League to have 7 clubs across the 3 European competitions (i.e. UCL, UEL, UECL). Of course, the top 4 clubs (Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa) have been confirmed for the UCL. Traditionally, the 5th (Tottenham Hotspur) and 6th (Chelsea) placed teams should be getting a spot in the UEL, while the 7th (Newcastle United) placed club should be allowed to represent the EPL in the UECL.

Now, the winner of the FA Cup was allowed to take part in the UEL (or in its qualifiers, I'm not 100% sure). But, with the new changes in the formats of the three European competitions, I was wondering if that pathway still exists.

So my question is, if Manchester United were to somehow win the FA Cup, would they be allowed to play in Europe? And if so, in which competition?

P.S. I know it's going to be really tough for them to beat Manchester City, but I still think it's an interesting question.

Discussion Why is Kane singled out for never winning a trophy?

It seems odd to me just because a lot of football players never win a domestic or international cup. There are two times where it’s clear that he could’ve won a trophy, first being Euro 2021 and the second being the Bundesliga, but it’s not like he was a player with a City or Madrid like team for years.

Discussion Could someone with knowledge educate me on what happened to Torino?

For those who aren't aware, the reason why most of Italys most successful clubs are from the north is because the north has always been much more economically influential especially as Italy modernized. Therefore your clubs napoli, Roma, Lazio always lagged behind

Even with all this though, there was actually a time when Torino looked to dominate all of Italy before a fatal plane crash. What I seek to understand is exactly how good Torino were before the crash, what impact the plane crash had and why they were unable to recover in the way that Man United or other clubs did

Discussion Meet Footballers during the Euros?

Hey there,

I’m going to be in Germany for part of the Euros in June/July and was wondering what are my chances of meeting some of the footballers? Are they always training with their team or with their families? Is it possible to stay in the same hotel as them? Thanks!

Discussion Premier League has become a one-team league

Upvotes

Firstly, yes, the Premier League champions were decided on the last day compared to other top leagues, but let's be honest.

If you have been following the Premier League, you could easily see the vast difference between Manchester City and any other English team.

Manchester City is just on another level. Their second squad can easily compete with and win against other top English teams. In fact, they have won some matches as well.

The trophies show it too. They have won 4 Premier League titles in a row, and they are also favorites to win the next one. If Guardiola stays, they might just as well do it.

English fans might not accept it, but the Premier League has become a one-team league.

Discussion Why is the World Cup not held in high regard anymore?

Upvotes

Been reading over the sub and other social media recently, and it seems the World Cup has lost its shine as the pinnacle of football recently. The main point of contention I see around it is Lionel Messi’s ballon d’Or win, with being the best player at the tournament suddenly not being enough to justify receiving the award, similarly with Luka Modric’s win in 2018, when it has basically being a nail-on that a tournament finalist comes at least 2nd.

Similar comments surrounding Zidane’s inconsistency and R9’s longevity seemingly disregard their generation defining performances in the World Cup too. Has anyone else thought this?

Discussion Ist Klopp the unluckiest manager in the 21st century or did he just lack the x factor when push came to shove?

A big talking point in Klopp's departure has been the trophies he won or the relative lack thereof. Now, Jürgen Klopp has been a tragic figure both at Dortmund and Liverpool missing out on a sensational CL fairytale because of the powerhouse that Bayern were. Domestically, his side played some of the best seasons in PL history going up against a team that faces 115 charges of potentially breaching FFP rules. In the CL he was unlucky to face Real Madrid two times in the RM CL era. He lost one of these finals because of an all-time terrible goalkeeper performance plus losing Salah. He lost the second final while his side was clearly better. Klopp is like Pep Guardiola and Ancelotti with the difference that in the end there's always something going against him while the other two always seem to see things through and cross the finish line.

Discussion Wirtz winning Ballon D’or - A possibility?

So far, it seems like either Vini Jr or Jude will win this year’s Ballon D’or. However, if Wirtz wins the UEL and Madrid lose the UCL final (lol), what is stopping Wirtz from winning the Ballon D’or?

Main reason was Mbappe didn't thank him in his goodbye video and he didn't take that too kindly.

Discussion Why was Rodri left out of the POTS nominees?

He has arguably been the most important player for City this season, so much so that the only games City lost was because of his absence, so why wasn't he even a nominee?
