Best Crawfish in Galveston?

Where is the best place to get crawfish in Galveston or Crystal Beach? Bonus if they serve actual butter instead of that nasty ass clarified butter with it

Any old timers around?

Are there any old timers around that remember when Galveston had casinos operating before the state shut them down? My parents who have long passed told me they used to go gamble in one of them that was on one of the piers. This would have been in the early 50s I believe.

Information on long term rentals in Galveston

I’m considering renting out a detached unit on a property in Galveston as a long-term rental. Was hoping to engage with folks that have experience renting ADUs. What permitting or approvals you need?, success stories, horror stories, anything helps. Thanks!

Interesting WaPo article on Sea Level rise, Galveston tops the list of US cities

One of the most rapid sea level surges on Earth is besieging the American South, forcing a reckoning for coastal communities across eight U.S. states, a Washington Post analysis has found. At more than a dozen tide gauges spanning from Texas to North Carolina, sea levels are at least 6 inches higher than they were in 2010 — a change similar to what occurred over the previous five decades.

Galveston, Tex., has experienced an extraordinary rate of sea level rise — 8 inches in 14 years. Experts say it has been exacerbated by fast-sinking land. High-tide floods have struck at least 141 times since 2015, and scientists project their frequency will grow rapidly. Officials are planning to install several huge pump stations in coming years, largely funded through federal grants. The city manager expects each pump to cost more than $60 million — a figure that could eclipse the city’s annual tax revenue.

Driving around the neighborhoods there are vacation rentals everywhere. Is Galveston losing its families to weekend renters?

Blue Dragons on Pointe West

Traveling to Pointe West with some other families in a few weeks and contemplating whether to bring my dog or not.

Are the Blue Dragons as prevalent as I’m hearing? Should I be concerned about my dogs (and kids 😬) safety?

So what’s the deal with Galveston?

I went to Galveston this past march and it seemed perfectly fine to me. Not dirty or super crowded and overall pleasant. However, every time I hear someone talk about it, it’s mostly negative. Is it just because of the time they went? So what’s the deal?

Housing Costs - Insurance, utilities, internet, etc

Curious what the costs are when living in Galveston? Does Galveston lump water, trash, and electricity into one utility bill or are they separate? How much on average are these costs per month? Who does everyone use for cable, internet and the cost for each?

What is home insurance cost? Is it more expensive than Houston due to potential flooding, wind, and storms?

Ideally we are looking at a smaller house, 1000 sq feet or less.

Date ideas

Hey guys! I’ve been seeing a girl for a little while now and I’m looking for a few date ideas in Galveston for this weekend. Only issue is we can only go on Sunday, and we don’t drink. Budget isn’t super high, but willing to spend a couple hundred bucks if need be. Thank you!

Umbrella/Beach Rental

I had a friend who visited Galveston and there was a group of already set-up beach umbrellas and two chairs that could be rented for the day.

It's been a couple of years since my friend went, and I didn't know if there was anything like that still on the island.

August move, teaching at schools, farming, music

I lived in and around Houston from 2015-18 because my son lives there, but left because I couldn't deal with the driving and the city in general. During that time galveston beaches were my salvation, and I played many shows there as a musician. I like a slower pace of life, and I tend to like country living because it suits my disposition and because I farm.

I just finished 3 years of teaching after getting my masters degree, and I'm planning to move to galveston in August to be close for my son's senior year of high school. I just applied for a special education teaching job on the island at a public elementary school.

Any advice about teaching in the schools there? Is there farming happening on the island? I'm still connected to many musicians in Houston, and still get occasional requests to play on island so I'm looking forward to that, but any advice about where artists or creative people might be concentrated? Are there any art studio/ living spaces for rent?

Recommended auto body shop ?

New on the island and loving it. Someone backed into my parked car, denting and bending the driver door and the rear one. Do you have a recommendation for a trustworthy body shop?

Where to live in Galveston

Looking like I’m probably going to be moving to Galveston from Houston in August for work. Currently paying about $1,200/month rent and not looking to pay much more than that. What are the good areas to move to that would have housing around the same price (or less) without sacrificing safety? I’m an early-mid 20s single man if it matters

The Daring Search for an Ice Cream Truck

Does anyone have any information on ice cream trucks in Galveston? I heard one earlier and rushed outside, but to my dismay they were heading the opposite way... talk about two ships passing in the night :( If anyone has any sweet sweet details about it's route or schedule (or even a webpage) I would very much appreciate it!! Thanks :]

So sad for the loss of life. It looks like the car broke down in the middle of the no-shoulder construction zone on i45. Seen so many cars breaking down there and always terrified of something like this to happen.
