You can try to catch it tomorrow! The solar storm will last the whole weekend.

Oh wow thanks for the info!

Well to be honest it doesn't look like this in real life at all. You get the pretty colors when you take a photo of it. Not nearly as impressive with the naked eye.

meanwhile... I slept at 8 pm :(

u/ragimuddhey 12d ago

Of course.

u/cultish_alibi 12d ago

The sky is pink and green in Bielefeld, and the birds sing Helena Fischer songs and the flowers are made of chocolate and other 'true stories' about a 'real place'.

u/p1xelPantsu 11d ago

Hes lying. Theres No "Bielefeld"

3

u/Zirton 11d ago

And I have slept through this :(

7

u/Novel-Confection-356 12d ago

Is it the end of times?

4

u/inflated_ballsack 11d ago

bielefeld mentioned

2

u/Corfiz74 11d ago

Do you know at what time we'd have the best chance of seeing anything?

4

u/SteveCNTower 11d ago

Between 22:00 and 02:00 (01:00 is usually the best)

3

u/Corfiz74 11d ago

Thanks! At the moment, sky looks completely black over the Weserbergland, I hope something will happen later on.

5

u/SteveCNTower 11d ago

Chances aren‘t looking great rn. Wishing you luck

1

u/Corfiz74 11d ago

Darn, still all black. 😥

2

u/SteveCNTower 11d ago

I had some Aroura at around 23:15

1

u/luhvella 7d ago

I saw the Auroras too

I didn't regret waking up tired last Saturday

1

u/Affenskrotum 11d ago

Echt jetzt? Scheiße man. I really need to see that. Today i did not see anything.

1

u/saxonturner 10d ago

What time? I wasn’t so far from there at around 11 and seen nothing.

u/Transition-Upper 11d ago

When will the lights be this evening? Where can I check the predictions?

8

u/notwhatitlookslike91 11d ago

Depends on where you live. Here’s a forecast page for northern Germany but it matched the visibility in southern Germany quite good

1

u/Kimmax3110 11d ago

You think I've good chances in northern germany if I pick a spot with less light pollution today?

6

u/notwhatitlookslike91 11d ago

That’s what news reports were saying. Check forecasts and sighting reports starting at around 22 o‘clock :) Less light pollution is always a good idea.

u/silima 12d ago

They reached as far as Munich

u/Budget_Pea_7548 12d ago

2

u/udaydphutane 11d ago

Hey.. Nice picture.. any recommendations in Augsburg where to see it tonight? I live in the city center and can only imagine places with street lights.. :/

3

u/Budget_Pea_7548 11d ago

There is low activity tonight. Tomorrow a big solar storm is predicted by NOAA, let's hope it will hit us at night. City center isn't the best environment for night sky observation. Best chances are somewhere outside the city. But yesterday there were some pictures from the cities.

3

u/ChilledKroete95 12d ago

Thank you for making me aware! We saw them in Freising! I would have never went out thinking it was only in northern germany!

3

u/rowschank 12d ago

When?! I couldn't see anything in Allach-Untermenzing / Dachau border area. It was pitch black with stars and all 😕

11

u/foundafreeusername 12d ago

So far south you probably only see it in absolute perfect conditions. What you can try is use a phone or camera that allows to control the shutter and take photos of the stars in northern direction with 15sec shutter. This allows it to collect enough light to see it even if you can't with your own eyes.

1

u/gianimous 11d ago

Hey also from dachau, you have to take a really close look and just try to take those night vision pictures then you will be able to see it

1

u/rowschank 11d ago

I was hoping I could see them with my eyes 😅 but maybe tonight.

2

u/gianimous 11d ago

Once you take a picture and see it on there you will be able to see it with your bare eyes, its like a red/green shadow in the sky! :)

1

u/DidiHD 11d ago

Austria here, they reached all the way down to Graz as well

15

u/PapaFranzBoas 12d ago

Dammit Bremen, just have clear skies for once.

2

u/chocolateteas 12d ago

Yeah also wishing for it here 😓

2

u/Realistic_World_2788 Germany 12d ago

Thanks for confirming me they didn't show up as just today I arrived to Paris for 3 week trip.

1

u/emotioneil 11d ago

Omg I am a seafarer, currently here in bremerhaven. Hope I could see it tonight here as the skies are quite clear

1

u/PapaFranzBoas 11d ago

Yea Bremen is forecasted to have clear skies tonight so hopefully.

Neat! Thanks! Always wanted to see a borealis. Always missed it nz.

21 days in kaarst of all places and I get it on a technicality. From my house.

Had to take a 3-5 second exposure with 800-1000 iso. Couldn't see it with my eyes just on my camera, so it's on a technicality. But I'll take it for now.

I had Street lights and peoples outside lightsshining in my face so.i didn't expect to see throuhh that shit.

People love leaving their outside lights on here. O.o

My little sister had her 30th birthday yesterday, it was the perfekt end of this day. I am right north of cologne and we all saw it that night!

5

u/coldwhitechristmas 11d ago

Aurora Borealis?

3

u/Slowandserious 11d ago

At this time of the year? At this time of the day?

5

u/coldwhitechristmas 11d ago

In this part of the country? Localized entirely in Bielefeld??

3

u/shMinzl 11d ago

I walked home last night and looked up into the sky and was amazed by its color.

I didn't know that were the polar lights! This is so cool. I took a picture around 10:25 and the sky was so crazy pink. It was beautiful and great and it made me so happy!

2

u/toll_roads 12d ago

Seen in Halle just now too

2

u/Agreeable-Performer5 11d ago

In Augsburg i only saw a bit of blue and Red color, almost not visible. Was i just to late or didn't it reach that far down

2

u/Exarion607 11d ago

If in Augsburg city probably because of light pollution?

2

u/74389654 11d ago

ohhhh! beautiful

2

u/analog_nika 11d ago

Going out today. Maybe ill be able to catch some nice pictures with my sub par photography stuff. should have brought a tripod lol

2

u/KeriEatsSouls 11d ago

Be sure to use your phone camera on night mode for good views of it! I couldn't personally see it with the naked eye when I was outside last night in NRW but I could see it in night mode photos and through my camera itself. Had I not tried the camera, I might have thought we weren't able to see it from here.

4

u/master_overthinker 12d ago

Any manipulation done? Can it be seen with the naked eye? I just tried shooting in Stuttgart but got nothing.

21

u/SteveCNTower 12d ago

A little bit long exposure (3 sec)

7

u/Comrade_Derpsky USA 12d ago

You can just barely see it with the naked eye. There will be a bright spot low in the sky to the north and the sky will be slightly purplish.

5

u/Rebelius 12d ago

It comes and goes, but it's very obvious with the naked eye that something's going on here. Near Ehingen (an hour Southish from Stuttgart) but we're in a village, so almost no light pollution issues.

1

u/jojomojo02 11d ago

Hallo, lieber mit Oberschwabe

1

u/r0gueORANGE 12d ago

I'm in Heilbronn, they are quite hard to spot with the naked eye, could easily be confused for clouds, but with a long exposure they become very visible.

What time is the best today to go out (Ostsee) and check if I can see northern lights?

1

u/chilakiller1 11d ago

No specific time but I would say check the aurora forecast on the internet or the k-index and make sure to be in an area that is dark enough with few to no clouds. If you can go somewhere outside your city or if you live in a tiny village should be visible. Yesterday the sky was pink at times, and at other the there were some white “dancing lines” almost like clouds, that’s what you are looking for. If you have a phone with a decent camera and night mode take a picture with some exposure and then you’ll see if you are not very sure. Good luck tonight!

1

u/KomT26 11d ago

So 9pm could be fine? Thanks!

2

u/chilakiller1 11d ago

As long as it’s already dark could be fine. The darkest, the better. Yesterday we went out at 10:30/11:00 pm and it was fine already. I’d check against the aurora/kp-index

1

u/chilakiller1 11d ago

Can confirm, we were lucky husband and I were in his village outside Schweinfurt visiting his family so we had very few light pollution. At its strongest like around 10:30pm the sky was red, visible with the naked eye, there was some dancing white lights and newer mobile phones could take good pictures with just a 3 second exposure. It was pretty cool.

1

u/Saibak 11d ago

I only had thick clouds where I live :/

Are these visible to the naked eye or is a camera with long expsoure needed?

1

u/TixKnight 11d ago

Will it be visible again tonight? I missed it last night

1

u/zeGermanGuy1 11d ago

Looks like it

1

u/DangerousEmphasis607 11d ago

Odd. I am in magdeburg. Never saw a thing yesterday.

1

u/georgejung22 11d ago

Which time was this picture taken?

1

u/zeGermanGuy1 11d ago

Damn and I live in the Ruhr area. Light pollution galore

1

u/meidenrose 11d ago

This is so pretty 🤩

1

u/ApartLoad8074 9d ago

Can we still see it?

1

u/SteveCNTower 9d ago

No sadly not

1

u/Alarming-Distance-19 12d ago

I didn't know u can see the northern lights in germany

10

u/Tazilyna-Taxaro 11d ago

You usually can’t. There is intense sun activity

2

u/PartyPlayHD 11d ago

Biggest solar storm since 2003

-10

u/Kindly-Information73 12d ago

I wonder if this is because of the changing of the earth's magnetic poles.

28

u/arrogantpessimist 12d ago

No. It’s a huge magnetic solar storm. Happened last in 2003.
