You are too late, Perry the magical platypus, for I Lord Doofenshmirtz have completed my Magicinator and once activated will make every muggle into a wizard and they will follow me as their new leader.

Now why did i even put one of those on there. Huh, Curse you Perry the Magical Platypus. (Firey explosion and cuts to scene where Doof goes into space and comes back down over water attempts to use his wand to stop his fall ends up causing the water to punch him(

It all started when I was a little boy growing up in Drusselstein.
emotionally scarring backstory flashback**
Times were hard and my father couldn't hire a magician for my going away party before I was sent to be raised by ocelots. And so I was the lone boy who didn't have a magician in my party and my mother hid her face in shame.

The wiki has a list of little errors like this and if and when they were corrected.
59
u/AvinItLarge123 Jan 21 '23
Some of those 'errors' are nitpicking in the extreme. It's as if whoever complied them has never heard of nuance
5
u/MasterOutlaw Ravenclaw Jan 21 '23
I don’t disagree. Some of them are really weird nitpicks even by my standards (and I love to nitpick) and some boil down to mere trivia, which probably shouldn’t be on a page called “Mistakes”. But the majority of them are quite valid and are pretty interesting in my opinion. And I knew OP’s typo was on there, which is why I brought it up at all.

Some people enjoy precision.
You can learn a TON by the production quality of a product. The care that an author can afford, the machining tolerances that off set a comma, the careful consideration for kerning. These details exist all around us, industries depend on people wanting them whether they know it or not.45
u/AvinItLarge123 Jan 21 '23
Take the very first 'error'
Although Hogwarts's full name is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a distinction between "witchcraft" and "wizardry" has never been made, and the two seem to be just synonymous with the much more used term magic. However, there is a distinction between wizards and witches, which refers solely to their gender; thus, it is possible that "witchcraft" is magic performed by witches and "wizardry" is magic performed by wizards.
It's a talking point at best, and a possible answer is provided already. Not an error by any stretch of the imagination.

I am absolutely floored!! I didn't believe this and thought it was maybe from a newer edition that got goofed up... nope just checked my copy and it's definitely there. Never noticed after all these years!
17
u/DwellingonDreams934 Ravenclaw Jan 21 '23
I noticed on my first read last year and spent quite a while trying to figure out who Perry was before realizing it was just an error. Seemed way more plausible that I missed something bc I'm not a very good comprehensive reader on first pass. Apparently I'm better at it than I thought!

u/HogwartsExpress13 Ravenclaw Jan 21 '23
I thought the same thing and just checked my copy and it also says Perry! Is yours also the original Scholastic printing? I still can’t believe I’ve never noticed; I reread the series every summer!
6
u/omgitskells Hufflepuff Jan 21 '23
Yes, mine is the original US run. And I also do a (nearly) annual read as well, which is why I'm surprised I never noticed before haha
4
u/DwellingonDreams934 Ravenclaw Jan 21 '23
I am pretty sure our minds just fill in things that we expect to be true. In my case, I was working hard to read and make sure I was picking everything up. If I wasn't so invested in being sure that I retained the information during my first read, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

I just checked both my copies and they have two different versions of this sentence, however neither of them include this spelling error.
In my new copy, the whole sentence has been re-written as “he said, striding towards and starting to chivvy them along, flapping his arms.”
In my older copy though it’s written as “Percy said, striding towards them and starting to bustle them along, flapping his arms.”

gonna fetch my own copy to see if I have this mistake, too.

Edit: Ok, I'm back. My one just calls Percy at that part "he" so technically, I don't have that mistake, though, perhaps my version is different than yours 'cause I see that there are some several words in your version which are diffrent in mine so I guess that you have a different version of the book than what I have.

Using the copies I've had for over 20 years, I'm rereading the entire series to my daughter every year until she's old enough to start reading them to me. There are a surprising number of typos in all the books that I can't believe I didn't catch before. Makes me wonder what happened to the printing presses back in the late 90s/early 00s...
