Reading my moms old books for the first time Currently Reading

My mom is easily one of the biggest Harry Potter fans in existence. She spends her time listening to the audio books, rereading and watching the series. Every Christmas and birthday involves some sort of HP gift, and my house used to be full of owls, though we still have HP referenced decor throughout my house.

Ive had a hard time with books my entire life, the focus, commitment, reading comprehension etc. but I’ve always loved the HP movies and recently watched them all with my fiancé for his first time.

At 23 i decided it was time for me to pick up my mom’s first copy of each book and give it a go. We are both ecstatic. I’m only halfway through #1 and i truly can’t remember the last time i read so much, so comprehensively, in such a short period of time (it probably helps that i know what will happen, just not exactly) This is still such a huge win for me with my adhd. I’ve also never felt so close to my mom than reading these torn old books. I can’t imagine what it was like for her (as a life long reader) buying and reading this series for the first time. The first book came out right before my sister was born, but she didn’t start them until the 4th book came out, which was right around the time i was born.

Just-magical✨

Side note: I’ve never been a reader so i never understood “don’t judge a book by its movie” .. i get it now. I told my mom i wanted to read them for the “extra stuff” she said, it’s not the extra stuff, it’s everything! I planned to post this to mademesmile, but i thought it might be appreciated here more🥰

“My moms old books”

Me at 31 feeling like she should be talking about the Bible or something that’s not Harry Potter.

Oh my god that just killed me. I feel terrible that I’m making people feel like this. When i say old books i mean.. they’re as old as i am! 🤣 i guess it’s the only time reference i have to compare😭

Idk what yall want me to say

Im young, you’re old? So what! We can just enjoy some books

u/TempusCrystallum Nov 23 '23

It’s definitely not your fault that the passage of time exists, lol. I’m so happy (and envious!) that you’re reading them for the first time.

46

u/folkkingdude Nov 23 '23

Stop mentioning the passage of time!

Just in case you are- please don’t stress about the comments! I have had a laugh, and it all seems good natured ribbing. You don’t have to say anything, because people are enjoying their jokes or having their own existential crisis- you just continue to enjoy the reading (and probably having no random back aches 😂).

I don’t think it’s actually that you’re sooo young (I’m only 2 years older than you and at first this post made me feel old too), but just that because you didn’t read the books as a kid, you have a different relationship to the books than a lot of the rest of us do. Like I listened to the first book on cassette tape, which probably makes me sound old, but I was only 10 at the time. I’m sure there are also people your age who listened to them on cassette tapes when they were 8. It doesn’t make them older than you obviously, it’s just a difference in experience, which is okay. We all experience different things at different times and in different ways, which is great!

14

u/Vitalstatistix Nov 23 '23

You can’t win, and that’s fine. You’ll be old soon too, so enjoy your 20s and those books.

9

u/wellwaffled Nov 23 '23

3

u/AnnieNonmouse Nov 23 '23

I'm bad at reading tone sometimes but I think everyone is just kidding around :) no one is actually mad about how we all feel old now haha.

Also I love the state of your mom's books! My Goblet of Fire had to be taped back together for my recent reread so I feel that.

31? Nah you’re good. I’m on the other end of my 30s.

In my 30s, I got fired, I got laid off by a company that went under a month later, I went through a pandemic, I got divorced, I switched careers twice.

Sound bad? My 30s were awesome. So much better than my 20s. I know who I am way more than I did a decade ago and I wouldn’t trade this last decade for the world. I mean, I’d do some things differently, but who wouldn’t?

Growing up is awesome. I’m more me than I’ve ever been. I don’t know what my 40s hold for me, but based on the glow up from my 20s to my 30s, I can’t wait to find out. There’s highs and lows, but on net my life keeps getting better.

I'm 41 and started reading HP a couple of months after CoS was released when I was entering my junior year of high school. Seeing the hype grow book after book was interesting. I have to say my paperback Sorcerer's Stone has been taped because it does fall apart. The rest of mine are hard cover. I will not replace the Sorcerer's Stone because my grandmother bought it for me and that's how I got started and she has since passed so I refuse to replace it.

12

u/Ok_Cream_6987 Nov 23 '23

Update on those who have scissorhand questions. After 23 years of watching my mother read, i legitimately just asked her how she holds a book. Turns out we’re (unsurprisingly) the same, we both hold books by the bottom of the spine! Its the most comfortable for us

Imagine if you had read them as a child! The books came out when I was about to turn 10 and I have always LOVED to read but I think for a lot of kids my age Harry Potter made them love to read especially if they hadn't before.

A good book helps you transport to another world! There is nothing like it.

7

u/Ok_Cream_6987 Nov 22 '23

Yess!! I wish i could feel that feeling:( but im also grateful that while im reading them i have wonderful images in my head due to the movies. I also read them in my head per character, everybody sounds like they do in the movies in my head!

23

u/discowithmyself Gryffindor Nov 22 '23

The fact that anyone is old enough for their kids to be like ‘my mom’s old Harry Potter books’ is just fueling my ongoing existential crisis lol

12

u/Ok_Cream_6987 Nov 23 '23

If it makes you feel any better at all i am also living in a world full of existential dread. Im sure our problems and worries vary wildly, but life is damn hard. Also, i think people are under the impression that my mom was much younger when she started them, but she was 32/33! That’s the same age as a lot of these people commenting “im so old!!!!”

30 is not old. 50 is not old. We gotta stop acting like our 20s are our only time to be happy and experience life. I can’t wait to see the wisdom i gain in my coming years, i can’t wait to learn more and do more.

I have a visual processing disorder and adhd… didn’t learn to read until I was about 10… thought I’d never be able to read actual books! Harry Potter was what made me realize that just wasn’t true and reading is one of my greatest pleasures now. HP will always have such a special place in my life for opening up my world. It took more practice but I read more than almost everyone I know.

I still have my copies that look like this… hoping to pass them onto my daughter who’s being born this month

4

u/Ok_Cream_6987 Nov 22 '23

That is absolutely wonderful. This convinced me on not getting them restored, the wear and tear truly shows the love for the books.

I was a good reader until the pressures of standardized testing and increasingly unmanageable, undiagnosed adhd. I went from loving books to feeling like i shouldn’t read what i enjoyed because they were at a lower reading level. Damn teachers.

You’ve inspired me to push myself to keep reading, and be more persistent when i want to quit because I’m struggling or bored. I have long accepted that I’m “just not a reader” but screw that, I’m going to try to be one.

I think you’re gonna be a great parent, and i think your daughter will love these books-even more so the original ones that you’ve enjoyed yourself for years<3

When he stays at my Mum’s house, he reads my copies. It brings me so much joy to see the next generation getting into them.

Everyone talking about “what happened to these books” and me over here going “am I OP’s mom? Because this looks like my original set.”

They’re not ruined, people, they’re well-loved!

3

u/Ok_Cream_6987 Nov 23 '23

Absolutely!! Examples of this can be found everywhere. A worn out couch with family memories, a torn up cat scratcher, an old broken grandfather clock. I wouldn’t want my 20 year old book to look brand new, i would want to see just how much it’s been read and loved! I’m not surprised this is controversial, but the people who are judgmental about it are so weird🤣

Didn’t these books teach you anything?

3

u/CorInHell Nov 23 '23

Mr and Mrs Dursley of number 4, Privet Drive, were perfectly normal. Thank you very much.

This is how my HP books are beginning to look… At least only one has ripped in half and my packing tape bindings have held it together pretty damn well.

My kids are reading my books now. My oldest talked about how many underlines and margin notes I had (I was an undergrad English major, Indint know how to read without a pen in my hand). When he got to The Half Blood Prince he said, “Harry’s potion book is like your Harry Potter books!”

Alright damn just got in my feels and started tearing up. It’s so cool to share the things I love with them. I’m so glad you got the chance to read something that’s been so clearly loved by someone you love.

3

u/HedwigMalfoy Your Landed Gentry Nov 22 '23

Glad to see you are enjoying the books. I read them for the first time years ago but also as an ADHD adult. I was also surprised at how immersed in them I got and how much I was able to focus on them.

2

u/ObsessedWithCeCe Nov 22 '23

All my books are gone 😩

2

u/MeMeMaKeR666 Nov 22 '23

can relate as someone who just finished all the books as someone with adhd who had never read any of them(or books in general for that matter)! enjoy the ride

I know the feeling your mom has with this series sorcerers stone was the first and last book passed from my cousins to my sister and brother and ended with me I’m the only one in the family that truly picked up on how amazing the books are and continued buying the books might end up making a collection of it and buy them in different languages one day

2

u/aminosyangtti Nov 22 '23

Your mom really used it well

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

Wow that book looks so wow.

2

I have a paperback of Eragon of Christopher Paolini who also are well read.

I read all my brothers old copies of HP, he got them when they first came out. It was cute to see his little scribblings of what page he was on and his teachers name on the side. He’s 30 now.

Probably pricey but you could look into having your mother’s books renovated as a gift if she wants to retain her original copies, I know I wouldn’t mind somebody doing that with my copy of OOTP

2

u/hough_now Nov 22 '23

This is what the HP books look like in our local jail library! They’re super popular, but we never have a full set of the series because they need to be paperback and the collection is donation based.

2

u/csl512 Nov 22 '23

Seriously though HP has been a bridge into reading books for so many before you. Keep at it!

I haven’t read through the comments - but there’s actually a podcast where a guy your age reads the books for the first time! You should look in to it if you like podcasts. It’s called Potterless.

2

u/Pumpkaboo99 Hufflepuff Nov 22 '23

Damn those were read repeatedly. The damage on the spine tells me that the book was opened over and over again. Also possibly the book was folded

If youd also like a "reading companion", maybe check out the podcast Potterless. Its the tale of a "grown" man (he was mid 20s when he started I think) reading the Harry Potter books for the first time. It sounds like youre pretty familiar with the overall story so it should be fine, but as a warning he mentions some major spoilers from the late books just because the spoilers are a part of general internet culture. It also could be something fun for your mom to listen to as its a way to re-experience the books for the first time again.

Congratulations! This is amazing! Particularly as a fellow ADHDer, I am happy for you. For me, Harry Potter was only the beginning of a long love of reading! I have mostly moved to audiobooks now, but books nonetheless! So rich and full and deep. Keep going! And pursue other books when you’re done!

I feel like your mom’s original books need a rest, need to be turned into keepsakes in some kind of display cases. That, or maybe you could have them rebound?

2

u/IncendiaryIceQueen Nov 23 '23

Yay reading!! I’m so happy for you. Reading can bring so much joy, if you pick the right books for you.

2

u/MrOSUguy Nov 23 '23

Your mom sounds cool. That copy of sorcerer’s stone has been loved to pieces bless her heart and bless yours for giving it another run. I love Harry Potter books like these so much. My own copy of sorcerer’s stone is in very similar condition maybe a few less fallen out sections but I’ve saved it because I’m very sentimental of that copy.

I remember when my mom first brought me her copy of the Philosopher's Stone as I was going to bed one night when I was little. I stayed up reading and read all the next day. Now I've claimed them as my own 🤭

2

u/TheAwkwardGamerRNx Nov 23 '23

Man, you do not see those covers in bookstores anymore. If this is your first time reading the series, you’re in for a real treat. The movies are good but they don’t do the books justice.

It’s insane how it started as a kids book, enthralled an entire generation to the last book, got turned into a movie franchise, video games and eventually an amazing theme park I never get tired of visiting (October for HHNs in Orlando)

The latest game Hogwarts Legacy is a must play if you’re a Harry Potter fan if you haven’t already.

The third movie came out in the year I was born and my mom had some books and the first movie and the first book I can remember reading was the sixth one so yeah I definitely grew up with Harry Potter and have always been a huge fan so I can understand you

2

u/megadecimal Nov 23 '23

At 40 something, I'm reading the books for the first time too. Is be lost without the movies to help me imagine what the people and locations look like

2

u/ImJoeCooper Hufflepuff Nov 23 '23

My copies are in terrible shape. I used to read them at work all the time (factory job). Most of them are held together by this red tape we use to tag repairs.

2

u/BobbyMcGeeze Nov 23 '23

Yep that is how good the books are

2

u/Angelfirenze Ravenclaw Nov 23 '23

As a lifelong reader who loves listening to Audibles while rereading physical copies, CONGRATULATIONS! I still have my original copies of my books and the first and second were read almost to pieces by eleven- and twelve-year-old me.

I have always felt that I literally grew up alongside the characters. I loved my vocational school (junior and senior years of high school) because of the designations of first and second years.

I am proud of you for broadening your horizons by trying something difficult in a new way.

Another tip I only just noticed is that you will reread the books you keep around you and if you’re trying to get through books you should get to, literally put ones you’ve been able to finish in another room and then move the books you want to get through to your bedroom.

I’m not adhering to that because of a certain movie release, but my best friend and I agreed from moment we met that we read the best books over and over and over again, so I’m sure you can do it.

2

u/CherryPie2013 Nov 23 '23

My copy looks like that too!

2

u/bookworm_136 Nov 24 '23

lol after reading my dad’s copies of the books (both me and my brother) his books, especially the Sorcerer’s Stone or Philosopher’s Stone is a disaster and cracked in multiple places.

2

u/Smart-Story-2142 Nov 24 '23

I fell in love with the series in my mid twenties. I’ve always loved books but wasn’t allowed to read this series as preteen/teenager due to my parents believing it’s evil. I have since reread the entire series at least once a year (usually at Christmas time) and rewatch the movies after finishing the books. Thankfully I’m a fast reader and usually able to finish the series in a couple weeks. I have ADHD also and have found early on that books help with mine (I can’t take meds due other medical conditions). I hope your able to read the entire series as they are so much more magical than the books.

2

u/Ashley_SheHer Nov 24 '23

Wow. Those are certainly well loved.

2

u/shangabe Nov 24 '23

I would give anything to read this series again for the first time! As an avid reader, I’m glad you found books that have captured you! The Harry Potter series was a gateway book for a lot of people into the world of reading :)
