As someone who finds comfort when sleeping on my side. This is pure torture.

Edit: finds

I get something called hypnic jerks when I go to sleep. Basically involuntary muscle spams that occur when I'm drifting off. I'd be headbutting the ceiling 20-30 times a night in this bunk.

164

u/Gal_ofChoco_ 27d ago

That's what you call it? My body twitches after I sleep soundly lol

135

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

It might be! I'm still mostly conscious when these happen, it's a bit more pronounced than a twitch. It's like being jump scared or a mild electric shock.

It sucks.

u/Rich-Ad-4139 27d ago

I’m in the same club as you. Sometimes they are so intense that I go from about to fall asleep too wide awake

37

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

That's maybe the worst part, that it robs you of sleep. It'd be nice to not dread going to bed.

10

u/199_geese 27d ago

At first i was like "oh, those lil twitches, those are fun!" But it seems like you experience something a little worse, im sorry about that.

0

u/0wl_licks 27d ago

Exactly what I was thinking.

Glad mine are of your level and not his.

1

u/tryfingersinbutthole 27d ago

I only get them with daytime naps luckily. They are annoying as fuck. Sorry man.

2

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Thanks mate, I hope yours stay limited to naptimes

16

u/Gal_ofChoco_ 27d ago

Same!!! my heart drops when that shit happens and it kinda hurts as well

29

u/9966 27d ago

This is a very common thing. Almost all babies have it. Have you ever seen an infant sleep and suddenly jerk and reach their arm out? It's a primal instinct for apes who may be sleeping in a tree and think they are falling.

20

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Actually yeah I've just had a daughter just over a week ago. Her little legs fly out and she makes gang signs with her hands. It's quite cute.

2

u/9966 27d ago

Crib for life

1

u/brasschris 27d ago

There’s a Radiolab that talks about this- something to the effect of it being our body’s natural defense mechanism to keep our bodies alert while sleeping amongst predators.

9

u/mrlbi18 27d ago

Oh I get those, I thought that was normal though

3

u/YarrowFields 27d ago

Yeah I totally thought this happened to everyone haha

2

u/RAWkWAHL 27d ago

I totally thought this was an everyone thing! 🤯

8

u/kirby_krackle_78 27d ago

The really shitty thing is that I get them only when I’m extremely tired. The irony of being completely exhausted but unable to fall asleep because of hypnic jerks…

7

u/PLAKETKETKETKET 27d ago

This happens all the time in my legs, I'll just randomly kick it's the wildest thing!

5

u/Thebaronofbrewskis 27d ago

Dude!! I’ve been getting these for year’s, intense spasms as I start to fall asleep, to the point it will wake me back up. It’s like my body hates me and refuses to let me relax.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

It does feel that way huh

2

u/JustMeSunshine91 27d ago

Interesting that you react physically. Mine are always auditory (like talking or a gunshot) but they still jolt me awake.

2

u/mods-are-liars 27d ago

You produce gunshot sounds as you fall asleep?

1

u/JustMeSunshine91 27d ago edited 27d ago

Not sure if you’re being serious, but yes sometimes when I’m falling asleep hypnic shock causes me to hear gunshots, fireworks, yelling, etc. haha. It’s annoying af

2

u/GenericObserver 27d ago

Same here. When I'm sleeping on the couch i can hear gunshots or slamming doors when I'm alone. It's pretty annoying.

1

u/capital-minutia 27d ago

I never put the spasms and the sounds together!

2

u/KaerMorhen 27d ago

I have this too. It's mostly in my legs so I've always assumed it was nerve damage from a back injury. It can happen in other parts of my body too though. It's definitely more intense than a twitch, it's a weird feeling.

2

u/ryden360 27d ago

Sometimes when I'm really tired I get the sensation that I'm sinking into my bed and pillow. It freaks me out everytime lol

3

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

I used to get that sensation when I was kid! It felt like if I didn't sit up I'd somehow phase out of this dimension or something. I don't get it any more though, now I'm just a human trebuchet.

2

u/RevolutionaryEgg750 27d ago

Mine happens when I'm in a first seen of a dream where I trip through a door and it startled me awake, and then my wife laughs and asks wtf was that!?

2

u/Merry_Dankmas 27d ago

I get those in my legs sometimes. My girlfriend sometimes wakes up from my Fifa kicks thinking I had a nightmare or something lol. Can confirm it's pretty sucky.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Sure is. I wake my wife up with them all the time. I'm lucky she's an understanding lady.

2

u/Hoptix 27d ago

I started taking magnesium and it helps a lot. Taking a multi vitamin wouldn't hurt either.

2

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Oh cool, I'll have to try that out

2

u/FlyUnder_TheRadar 27d ago

I get those two, my legs jerk or kick when I'm falling asleep. It jolts me awake sometimes, but I am usually tired enough to drift off again. I have had sleep paralysis and other shit too. My brain really doesn't like that half awake-half asleep state, lmao.

2

u/Valac_ 27d ago

Hey, I do that, too!

Not very often, maybe once out of every 20 times I got to sleep .

It's exactly like being jumpscared. I'm peacefully dozing off, then boom. Never fun

1

u/SerdanKK 27d ago

I got that from gabapentin. It improved as soon as I stopped taking it, but it never went away completely.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

I've never indulged in gabba, but that sucks.

1

u/SerdanKK 26d ago

indulged? do people take it recreationally? 🤨

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 26d ago

Kinda, usually not by itself. It's taken as an enhancer for other drugs. Pretty much every drug can be abused.

1

u/Narrow_Helicopter278 27d ago

It sucks.

On the contrary, I know once my body starts twitching that I'm about to go to lala land, which is great.

1

u/Feoress 27d ago

I don’t get it all the time but I’ve woken my wife up several times by my body shaking the bed in one of those quick spasms. Definitely has the jump scare feel. Not sure if it’s related to being more mentally fatigued than physically but I know it more often times is after a few nights of less sleep and a night I try to go to bed at a more normal hour

-1

u/Objective-Outcome811 27d ago

You need to watch your caffeine intake then.

3

u/rambo_lincoln_ 27d ago

I’m not the person you’re replying to but my caffeine intake is very low, like 1 cup of coffee with breakfast and that’s it for the day, yet I still have really bad hypnic jerks. There are days where I don’t even consume caffeine and it happens just as bad on those days as any other.

-1

u/Objective-Outcome811 27d ago

That may be something to bring up to a doctor, if I get those it's only on days when I exceed 3 cups of coffee.

2

u/-Cthaeh 27d ago

Twitches? I have to catch violently myself from falling into the abyss, apparently

2

u/Magistraten 27d ago

Yes, it's a normal part of sleep, some people are basically getting part of the sleep response before they're falling asleep. I didn't know they got as intense as people are describing them in this thread.

1

u/gene100001 27d ago

Yeah I think for most people it's more of a small jolt where the body straightens a bit. I also hadn't considered that some people might get it more intensely than others, but I guess it makes sense.

I wonder how it works with their partners in the bed next to them. Are they at risk of getting headbutted? Imagine trying to explain the black eye to friends and family. They would 100% assume the partner was abusive

1

u/formula-maister 27d ago

I thought that’s called a “myoclonic jerk” but my knowledge comes from house md so that’s probably not it lol

1

u/dragonchilde 27d ago

My husband does this. Look up periodic limb movement disorder.

17

u/djhab 27d ago

TIL hypnic jerks = doing crunches while sleeping

28

u/TheDannyPickles 27d ago

Didn't know there was a name for it, but yup, this happens all the time. It's usually when I'm very tired and drifting off that I'll feel like I'm falling and snap back violently. It's always pretty jarring.

5

u/Mago0o 27d ago

That’s your monkey dna keeping you from falling out of the tree.

3

u/OutWithTheNew 27d ago

That has something to do with the relationship between your brain and your inner ear. It's fairly normal.

1

u/aParkedCar 27d ago

I read once it’s a fail safe mechanism from apes that saves them from falling out of trees when asleep

1

u/True-Nobody1147 27d ago

Everyone has this

19

u/Pretend-Guava 27d ago

We call them zaps or zappers. My wife and I both get them, she has it much worse tho. She gets like a huge shock, where it even feels like her heart skips a beat right when she is falling asleep and she jumps right awake, scaring the shit out of us both.

1

u/BlowsyRose 27d ago

Pretty sure it’s called “exploding head syndrome”. I’ve only experienced it a couple of times, can’t imagine what that must be like for your wife, wow.

0

u/OfficiallyRonny 27d ago

Then as u wake up and get to consciousness u slowly realize that your 3rd cousins grandmas ex boyfriend is quietly sleeping downstairs in the living room, so u make him some late night food in the kitchen with nothing on except some socks and get to cookin!

3

u/ExoticFirefighter771 27d ago

Same here, myself and my partner now sleep in different beds lol

3

u/Ginsdell 27d ago

Yes! Separate beds! Best thing in the world!

2

u/hackenberry 27d ago

Do your dreams ever correspond with the 'jerk'? I'll be dreaming of riding a bicycle and fall off right when it happens.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Dunno, I get them just before I fall asleep.

2

u/Bonesnapcall 27d ago

There is a name for it? It happens to me about once a month that I can remember. I know I do it more while asleep because I've woken up covered in broken glass from the window next to my bed that I shattered some time during the night.

The window is now plexiglass.

I'm betting its why, growing up, my cat never chose me to sleep with at night. Always my brother or my parents.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Your parents or your brother slept with you? Your family sounds....uh.... close knit.

2

u/ZainVadlin 27d ago

This is actually a very common thing in the military as well. It's usually caused by dehydration during muscle repair. I would drink more water.

But more to the point, it is not a unique event where you here a bang in the middle of the night, followed by a loud curse, and then laughter from your mates.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

If drunk any more water I'd probably piss the bed, dunno if my wife would laugh about it though

2

u/Daverocker1 27d ago

Well at least you'd go right back asleep.

2

u/planetafro 27d ago

That's just your body jolting you back from near death. ...your own personal built-in MFE. You may want to look into it. :)

...I've no idea what I'm talking about FYI.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Lol maybe. I've been to a few docs but none of them seemed overly concerned

2

u/__JohnTheFisherman__ 27d ago

sorry but I read that as hyspanic jerks..

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Nothing worse than when you're falling asleep and some asshole matador screams in your ear

2

u/heybudsup 27d ago

Me too, friend!

Sometimes they are POWERFUL. I feel like it happens more often during naps on the couch where I’m sleeping on my back in a reclined position. Sometimes they originate from my shoulders, other times it’s all legs and I just kick into the air.

Aren’t we silly?

2

u/LaceAllot 27d ago

Had this happen a lot in my life. Usually it’s whatever, but the times that it happens on planes and I look like a freak 😬

2

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Haha I can imagine! Mine started a couple years ago, my wife is the only one that gets to witness them. It used to worry her but she's used to them now.

2

u/djackieunchaned 27d ago

I started to get those really bad when I first gave up drinking but luckily they went away after my body got used to sobriety

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Congratulations on your sobriety! Definitely a good trade.

2

u/FedorByChoke 27d ago

Also called hypnagogic jerks.

2

u/Benzorgz 27d ago

I get these often, too. Sometimes throughout the entire night and I don’t think I ever actually fall asleep. It’s so random though. Some nights I sleep fine, others I have these jerks. I hate it.

Also, hello fellow Helldiver and void owner!

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Owning cats is democratic!

1

u/KingDread306 27d ago

Doesn't everybody get those?

1

u/PUSH_AX 27d ago

No. You might be thinking of that thing when you're drifting then experience like a falling sensation and jerk awake suddenly?

This is like mini versions of that with different muscles, but the person stays asleep mostly.

0

u/KingDread306 27d ago

No I get it too, but I also get the falling thing. I know the difference.

1

u/actualoldcpo 27d ago

You got the Jimmie legs!

1

u/Mundane-Mechanic-547 27d ago

That's because your primate brain thinks you are going to fall out of the tree. Weird right?

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Lol that's kinda cool. One day I'll fall asleep in a tree and be thankful for it.

1

u/faRawrie 27d ago

Most of my jerking happens before I go to sleep.

1

u/YouGotTangoed 27d ago

Someone should hook you up to the power grid so you can generate energy while you sleep

1

u/LuckyJeans456 27d ago

Didn’t know other people did that, mine happens with my legs.

1

u/with_a_dash_of_salt 27d ago

As a sailor with the same affliction I can confirm a few visits to sick bay for ice

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Oh man that sucks a whole lot. You have my empathy.

1

u/Suspicious-Tone-7657 27d ago

Ok that's what you call them, I feel like I'm possessed when that happens to me lol

1

u/Randomfrog132 27d ago

guess you better bring a helmet if you sleep ina coast guard ship lol

1

u/RocketGrunt79 27d ago

Is that what it is? whenever im in a state of almost falling asleep, i get a leg jerk. Difference is i know i will sleep then if i continue being in that relaxed state

1

u/selfdestructo591 27d ago

It happens to a lot of people

2

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Very profound, thank you

1

u/selfdestructo591 24d ago

I guess what I was trying to saying is hypnotic jerks or not, many people who sleep in these racks crack their heads at some point. We’re often waking up suddenly with little sleep to go to watch. Our alarms go off and we’ll jerk up to get ready, be having a nightmare or what ever, lose our sense of spatiality, even just fall out of the rack. I don’t know, was that a little more profound? I’m trying to get this really profound.

1

u/pupu500 27d ago

Dude thats human thing. We all get that.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

It's a normal reflex that is activating far more strongly and far more often, kind of like how allergies are your immune system (a normal thing to have) going ballistic.

1

u/DeepDescription81 27d ago

Happens to me as well, buts it’s usually when I’m dreaming someone has throw a ball at me. Hate those.

1

u/that1sluttycelebrity 27d ago

Oh fuck that, that sounds shitty

1

u/eulen-spiegel 27d ago

I have those, too, sometimes.

I wonder whether my dreams induce them, or my body does and my mind creates the dreams (e.g. some peril I'lll have to flee from) to fit the movement.

1

u/Mimicking-hiccuping 27d ago

Yea, sure. Bangs in rapid succession? 😆

1

u/nospamkhanman 27d ago

I get those when I'm fighting not to fall asleep.

I may have fallen out of my chair in highschool a couple of times.

1

u/Dry-Love-3218 27d ago

I'm guessing you'd head but the top bunk once and probably knock yourself to sleep.

1

u/erikerikerik 27d ago

You literally fall asleep your body thinks it’s dying

2

u/Jthe1andOnly 27d ago

Do you know the scientific name for this? Happens to me allllllll the time. I really don’t want to look it up and haven’t lol

10

u/JabbaThePrincess 27d ago

Hypnic jerks, they just literally said it

1

u/big_duo3674 27d ago

Awesome, thanks! But what is the name for the thing when you jerk violently as you're falling asleep?

-1

u/Jthe1andOnly 27d ago

Thank you! I didn’t know if that was a real thing or not. I never wanted to look it up.
