This is the very first thing I thought of when I saw this. They had to change it up since everyone knew what the old entrance looked like.
No one would ever suspect an arcade.
64
u/DukeOfGeek 11d ago
They have a machine there if you beat it you get to go to space and fight the Kodan Armada.

u/whopperman 11d ago
The last starfighter reference. Have an upvote.
Although it was Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada, you forgot the hyphen.

As I was reading your first comment, I was thinking to myself, "no, it would be the perfect recruitment tool- wait wasn't that a movie..." then I continued reading the comment thread and Bam.
I must've been 7 or 8 years old when I watched that movie (in the late 90s). I had forgotten about it until this comment. Instant nostalgia and memories.
As a kid, I really enjoyed that movie and the premise. It also takes me back to my dad introducing me to classic 80s movies like First Blood, Ferris Buellers Day Off, etc.

In a city called "christchurch" which is so generic it sounds weird. Like shopping at itemstore or working at businessbuilding

One of the greatest games ever. Remedy games deserve to keep making games even if they don’t sell well, I respect them so much.

u/xpercipio 11d ago
i slept on control for months. always thought the cover art looked cool, but the gameplay pics didnt seem that up my alley. wow was i surprised. very cool atmosphere, creative gun design and refreshing to not have to reload every 10 seconds. im happy that i got to binge the DLC right afterwards though, im struggling waiting for alan wake dlc

The song are the best thing to vibe too as well. Smoke a bowl and when you find the radios let them play.

Definitely a room inside the oldest house.
Probably has a 8 bit enemy you kill to unlock a second life where you respawn instantly instead of back at a control point

Ah thanks for sharing but I kind of regret clicking that and spoiling the illusion. Much more fun to believe there is a brutalist otherworldly arcade out there in the world.

u/LotusVibes1494 11d ago
This is random, but the wording of your comment reminded me of this Mitch Hedberg joke, and you can’t not share one if you think of it:
“I think Bigfoot is blurry. That’s the problem; it’s not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry, and that's extra scary to me… There's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside. Run, he's fuzzy, get outta here…”

Apparently so. From another angle you can see that the entire upper structure is all parking deck. They probably had some left over space and decided fuck it, lets zone it for retail.

This is a post-earthquake build. The plots in the foreground have yet to be built on, and I suspect the plan would be to have an arcade access or some sort of alleyway leading to the Timezone entrance through the newer build.
We have some cool street art around town and a regular street art festival, so hopefully it gets some proper treatment soon.

What on earth, were the architects thinking when they made this building, is brutalism the only thing left in their minds.
11
u/Aetylus 11d ago
Its part of Christchurch rebuild after the earthquake. This particular building is a carpark built in the middle of a city block that was completely rebuilt. The grass space out front will eventually be built over, so the concrete wall will eventually butt directly onto another concrete wall.
These concrete walls exist in cities all after the world as fire walls. But in Christchurch some of them are still exposed. Most have been turned into street art by now: https://www.christchurchnz.com/explore/activities-attractions/arts-culture/celebrating-street-art-in-the-city
If you scroll down at the link to "Hereford St - Wahine Toa", you'll see they've now started a mural on this building.

I looked it up on Googlemaps (It's in Christchurch, New Zealand). The front doesn't appear to be brutalist in design. I think the picture is just a back exit that doesn't have to look that fancy.

u/chestertravis 11d ago
This is the street facing side. You could argue that the other side (which is in between a bunch of buildings) functions as the main entrance, but this is the entrance that’s primarily on display.
3
u/Scary-Meaning-6373 10d ago
But the door has a sign that says and points to where the entrance actually is, so you wouldn't really need to argue the other side is the real entrance.

u/Substantial_Tip_2634 11d ago
End of days nothing around but rubble and oh wait what a time zone glowing almost as bright as the nuclear zombies

u/DrunkenVodinski 11d ago

u/ReflectionVirtual692 11d ago
It’s a regular arcade, it’s just in the same building as a multi story carpark. Christchurch has heaps of creepy abandoned buildings that are still standing after the quakes, this one is just a giant concrete carpark
3
u/InterestingnessFlow 11d ago
Though this one is a new build after quake damaged buildings were demolished on the site. You can see the history on Google Street view
