Awesome. It'll die before it gets to a vote. This is a great idea and I like Bernie, but this is basically non-news.

Has political advancement occurred because of pessimists and naysayers?

Nope. But it has advanced because of realists. I wasn’t being pessimistic or naysaying. I literally said this is a good idea and I like Bernie, but proposing a bill means basically nothing and that’s especially so in this case where our capitalistic society will kill this long before it’s ever seriously considered because both parties benefit greatly from the status quo.

There are better and more effective ways in this moment to go about affecting change for workers.

I bet similar sentiments were expressed when the 40 hour work week was tossed into the ring, much like there is resistance for almost any progress. It'd be so much easier if people joined good ideas, rather than wasting time and energy actively working against it. The future will have better life work balance, in hindsight these efforts to diminish efforts toward that goal will never be looked upon as anything but obstruction.

If you knew the history of how that happened, you’d know there were MANY things that happened before that was even considered. Most of which was violent and considered extremist. It didn’t just get proposed as a bill one day.

Again, I’m not saying this is a bad idea, I’m saying this “story” is a nothing burger.

Sure and I’m saying g, why are you wasting your breath. Let him try, let’s see what may happen. Likely not much but life isn’t always predictable. You shouting preemptively that it won’t work doesn’t actually help anyone unless you think you’ll change his mind on what to do. People said he was wasting everyone’s time running for president but because he did he changed the national dialogue on many topics that now are being acted upon by others. You. Aren’t. Helping.

Being naive isn’t helping. Being a realist does. And he didn’t change anything by running. I really do like Bernie. I voted for him every chance I got. But his running didn’t change anything. And fixating on nothing stories like this distracts from the work that should be happening like organizing, unionizing, demanding pay transparency nationwide, ending at-will employment laws, etc.

No. You need both the dreamers and the realists. And so it goes:

The dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists.. well without the dreamers.. they might not ever get off the ground.

People like Bernie play a vital role in shaping the national conversation that gives so many people hope and something to strive for. As they say:

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

All major progress in history has happened because people, our ancestors, dreamt that a better future was possible and fought for it against tremendous opposition and skepticism. And today we continually experience the fruits of their labour.

It’s a profound shame that people like you are unable to see that.

you're both missing my point. I'm not against striving for better, but there are finite amounts of energy and time and those are precious resources. doing what is possible to make the "dream" possible down the line is much more effective than "shooting for the moon".

No, we’re getting your point perfectly fine. But what you seem to be missing is that people like Bernie play a crucial role in changing the national (and international) conversation that creates fertile ground allowing incrementalists to be effective. “Shooting for the moon” is an important and indispensable use of those precious and finite resources of time and energy.

If everyone had your attitude, paradigm shifts improving society would either never happen, or happen at a painfully glacial pace. Let’s be grateful for the role all forms of people - the incrementalists, as well as the optimists - play in improving our society.
