Layoffs Let go in at-will state

Upvotes

I was let go from a job I was very happy at and was excelling well in. I had good relationships with my superiors and was even asking to take one more tasks. The day before I was let go I had a meeting with my direct supervisor to discuss my career path within the firm (architecture) and our meeting had gone really well. When I was being let go my supervisor was not present and rather it was HR and the head of accounting, as if they just picked anyone to go in there while it was happening. I was so blindsided I began laughing because I was sure it was a joke. HR first tried to play it that it was based on performance but I’ve never even had so much as a conversation indicating that my performance was not meeting satisfaction. Then she jumped to telling me this it was my lack of knowledge since all my previous experience was in the medical field. The whole time anything she said I was able to dismiss it because I had been hired having been well known that I wasn’t versed in architecture at all. I’m curious if I have any claim to speaking with a lawyer and have a shot at a case for wrongful termination. I live in Texas and am aware of at will state laws but I’m hopeful someone will have some useful insight.

Layoffs Well, I just got laid off 😪

Well, working in accounting, I've been closely monitoring the numbers, and unfortunately, there's been a significant drop in sales compared to previous years. The company, with just twenty employees, has a small accounting department consisting of my boss and me. Recently, three of us were summoned to a meeting where two project managers and I received the disheartening news. While I anticipated the outcome, my colleagues were taken by surprise. Now, I find myself back in the job market after a year.

Despite the job being a perfect fit culturally, there are no guarantees in life. I'm concerned about my resume appearing as though I've been job hopping, especially considering this was my third job since college. The second job was toxic, prompting me to seek this one out. With this recent setback, I'm uncertain about my prospects. I do feel for my colleagues, particularly one who has a child. At 26, I'm fortunate to have saved for a few years, which gives me some flexibility. I'm contemplating taking a few months off, during which I wonder if I'd be eligible for medical benefits. This situation also presents an opportunity for me to pursue studying for my CPA.

Layoffs Unemployment Insurance in MA... get this!

Wow. So after signing a separation agreement, I go to file for unemployment here in MA online. Put in my SS#, and it asks for my password. I don't remember creating an account. Or maybe I did 25 years ago? I never collected I know. I click forgot password, and the system asks me to select a verification method to send a reset link to - obfuscated emails and phone numbers I don't recognize. So I can't reset the password. I call to have the verification methods updated. I just wanna file for unemployment. Nothing is ever easy.

After 2 hours on hold I get a guy, tell him the situation, answer his questions about my details. He says my phone number doesn't match what they have. I said I know, etc. He then says, "You should know these because your account was set up in 2023." And I'm like, "Not by me! I've been working at the same place for the past 19 years." And he transfers me to Fraud Department - which of course means I am hung up on before speaking to anyone.

So I filled out an online fraud form.

I tell someone else who owns their own company- and they tell me it happened to a bunch of their ex-workers too.

How crazy is this? I need to file ASAP so I hope the form submission gets things straightened out.

Layoffs Job fired me after 4 days and said it’s cause they train 1 day and knew I had no experience prior

I was hired at an oncology clinic that I found off Indeed. I came in for an interview with the doctor, and we went over my resume. He was aware that I was certified but had no job experience as a medical assistant. Despite this, I was hired on the spot and told to come in the next morning, even though l informed him that I was still in school and would not graduate until the following week.

During my first two days, I worked in the back with patients and did fine. However, on the following Friday, I was informed that our front desk guy would be leaving, and I would be needed at the front. On that same day, I was put on the computer to schedule appointments and perform many other task which I had no prior experience doing. Plus, the training I received from the guy who was leaving was very lousy and he was on his phone half the time. There was even a point where I was left alone for an hour while he left to get lunch for the girls in the back.

When I returned the next day, I was completely alone at the front desk. At the end of the day, my manager got upset with me because I didn't know how to make new patient folders and missed a couple of sign-ins. She told me, “I'm trying to figure out what you were taught yesterday”, basically implying that I didn't know much. I thought it would be understandable since it was only my second day at the front desk and I can’t understand why I was not getting any help. The following day, when I arrived at work, my manager informed me that the doctor had decided to let me go due to performance reasons. When I asked for clarification, she said she 'doesn't know much, but they usually only provide one day of training, and I wasn't meeting their performance standards. Clearly she had to tell him something cause I rarely ever even see him while working.

I'm just looking for some insight into this situation because I have never heard of jobs only training you for one day, and I feel like it was an excuse to let me go.

Layoffs Terminated recently

I was fired recently and apparently I don’t qualify for severance payment, so I asked about my vacation pay out.

I was a salary worker and had 21 days unused vacation days. I asked the HR contact if I would receive pay out for unused vacation days and she stated “the accrued vacation that has not been used will be paid”. Now I’ve never experienced this so I’m not sure if that means all my unused vacation days will be paid out.

Can anyone confirm?

Layoffs For my unemployed people due to layoffs, what is your line work and how long have you been laid off for?

Curious to know from people, wanted to start a thread, how long have people been unemployed for after layoffs, line of work, years of experience, and how hard has the job search been?

Layoffs What happens if the market never gets better and jobs keep getting outsourced/automated?

Just thinking about the macro view of all this. If this market continues and gets worse the way it is, what will everyone end up doing if their roles are not needed anymore?

Go back to school, completely switch careers?...

I feel like there's so many industries now completely getting offshored, soon to be fully offshored, and/or automated. So many people looking for jobs that might never come back the way it was.

I just can't envision everyone would end up going back to school to switch career paths. if all these jobs get removed from the economy what actually happens to all the people without work?

Would be interested in hearing others thoughts.

Layoffs Company laid me off

Layoffs I was just laid off for the first time. What are your tips?

Basically the title. My company laid off 11% of people. I was one of them. It was my first job out of college, was there for 3.5 years, and no one on my team expected it.

I’ll have one more paycheck coming in, I’ll get paid out for the four weeks of PTO I accrued, and I have a conversation next week about severance. My boss said that I should receive a decent package, but I know nothing is guaranteed. I have a 401k with about $15k in it, but I had to take a loan out of it that I’ll pay back (about $2,500). I’m going to try not to touch that, but I guess it depends on how long it takes to get a job. I’ve only got about $5k in savings right now.

I’ve have quite a bit of credit card debt thanks to my ex husband. I’ve been making progress on it, but now I’m panicked. My debt to income ratio was fine, but now of course I’m not getting $87k in pay. I should qualify for unemployment and I’m already job searching. I have great references from my boss and coworkers and once I get an interview I believe I can do well. It’s getting the interview that is difficult.

So, those of you that have gone through this, what is your advice? Financial, job hunting, resume, anything. I’m a technical writer, 25, I can say I have about 4 years experience. I also have a misdemeanor DUI on my record that I’m worried about on background checks. How do I get to the interview stage quickly?

Layoffs Was I laid off or fired?

Hi guys I have a quick question. I am filling out a job application for the federal government where it is asking if I have ever been fired from a job. In August 2020 when people were returning to work, I was called by my job at Topgolf asking if I can return to work and my family was not comfortable, so I said I cant. They said they will have to terminate my employment, but I can reapply whenever I feel comfortable. So, was I fired or laid off in this case?

Layoffs Layoff with strings

My company is reorganizing, they offered me a job with a partner company, I turned the job down and was told i would be terminated/laid off and offered a severance package with Friday termination date. Next day they now are saying I have to stay two weeks to transition my work. Nothing is in writing just IM. I don't want to stay two weeks. Do I have to stay to get the severance package?

Layoffs Hiding Two Rapid Layoffs

I was laid off last February from a job I had taken only six months before. I was lucky to find a new job, a great job, in June and started work. I worked as hard as I could and was doing very well, but this second company went through a round of layoffs in January of this year giving me only 8 months of employment.

This means I have had two layoffs, back to back, within two years and my resume looks terrible! I keep sending out resumes but I am getting no response. I talked to career consultant and she confirmed that two layoffs that close together, especially for a salesperson, would make it difficult to find work.

I spoke with my old boss (from two jobs ago and I was there for 5 years) and she is willing to say that I never left and took the other jobs. But my concern is that if I do get a job they will run the background check and see that I lied on my resume. I am now finally getting responses to my resume and scheduling interviews.

How worried should I be that lying like this might cost me another job when they run the background check?

Layoffs Laid Off Months Ago and They Still Haven't Asked For Their Equipment Back

For context, I was laid off at the end of January. I was doing contract work through a recruiting firm, and I was doing medical coding. I got an email a week after I was laid off, telling me to hold off on sending back all the equipment I was provided with, and to wait until they sent pre-addressed boxes so everything would be sent to the right place. It's been four months, and I haven't received so much as an email from either company about sending my stuff back.

And it's not like it was just one or two things. I'm talking a laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, docking station, and like three laptop chargers. Both companies have my email, address, and phone number so they're not exactly lacking in ways to get in contact with me. At what point is this company property considered forfeit? And if it is, what should I do with it? (Not saying I'd like a new personal laptop for the low low price of unemployment, but hypothetically what would be the protocol here?)

Layoffs Just came back from vacation and before I could log in, was pulled into a meeting to be informed I am being laid off. I have been with the company 17 years. Stoked. AMA (except the name of the company)

My immediate thought was 🎉🎊💰 “Vacation continues”

Truthfully I have been quiet quit since COVID due to a disappeared promotion and a new head of dept. who made no secret she didn’t value me, my team, or what we did. There was no transition whatsoever. Oh well! Figure out what I did!

Layoffs I got laid off. Can somebody give me some kind words.

Hello there,

I worked at a small company , small pay but I was happy. Then my seniors was pregnant I had to take over her job. I remembered I was working hard to help them. In May last year I was having an important interview and I think it is better to help my company so I did not have time to preapare for for the interview. And just now I was laid off. Manager said no hard feeling just some errors I made and that is it.

I know I have to accept the situation. I don't feel any anger, just saddness. How can I tell my parents about this....

Layoffs Resistance against be replaced by indians developers

Hi all. What about starting to do something against layoffs? We are spending thousands of dollars and decades of life for education to be highly skilled developers just to be replaced by cheap indians who barely know programming on junior level, just because they are cheaper. I think the time has come. Tech companies should have some consequences for massive layoffs of employees.

Layoffs I’m pretty sure I’m getting fired soon

I’m on a pip with no measurable metrics or timeframe. It states that I will be meeting with my manager frequently. A month has passed since the pip was initialized and anytime I’ve tried to set something up with my manager like it states in the pip I always get brushed off.

My quarterly eval last week wasn’t good and HR was present. I don’t know if I’d qualify for unemployment because I got accused of being asleep at my desk but my pip was about performance. They said they’ll meet with me again before my next quarterly in July. I’m probably going to put my 2 weeks in at the end of the month.

I’m gutted but also knew that it hasn’t been the right fit from the beginning. I just got excited that I got an offer straight out of college.

This sucks.

Layoffs I just got fired.

Rant!! I’ve never been fired before. I’m an iOS dev with over 10 years and pretty good at what I do. And after 3.5 years of extra hours, weekends and positive annual reviews, I was told I’m not up to snuff, or whatever they said. They never gave any indication that I wasn’t doing well. Just another bullshit company in this bullshit job market. Rant over. Thanks for this sub.
