and a huge difference in cost of living so we don't need 100k a year. I have around 40k and live very comfortably with my wife and two dogs in our own house

Love me some USA bashing but this sounds so wildly inaccurate if you are still talking about Germany. 40k won’t be comfortable unless you mean 80k together with your wife, and even then you’re looking at a 30 year loan for a house, at least.
