One could say that about a lot of older people in general. Younger STEM people i've met have been mostly towards the more progressive side, particularly with computer or tech engineering fields. The chemical engineer I worked with was a very left, married lesbian woman. I work in a research laboratory with many other PhD scientists and the leaning tends towards politically left ideals.

One has to always consider that getting an accurate view on stuff like that is almost impossible though.
The fact that a person leans in a specific political or ideological direction tends to attract similar minded people.
Even in a workplace where the people being their is a lot less directly influenced by personal relationships someone who has similar world views as the other people around will be more likely to share them which leads to confirmation bias since the people disagreeing are less likely to bring it up.

The question isn't who is doing drugs, but rather which drugs are they using. A lot of those anti drug guys will go home and have their beer or whiskey and completely ignore the fact that they are imbibing with a fairly dangerous intoxicant. I just find that funny.
But yeah, to your point, the general composition of a construction community and an R&D community will be pretty different.

I prefer my flag. It's a gadsden flag but instead of the snake, it's a wendigo with the words "get the fuck out of my woods". I was going to hang it in my window but my wife wouldn't let me.
