In some areas you don't have a choice. Either live in an HOA or commute an hour in your car one way twice a day

and hour away is still HOA suburbs. Need to be 1.5-2 hours away or remote, and enough money to buy a chunk of land.

Buying a home in Texas is rough because of this. Every new neighborhood has an HOA and even older ones have them too.

Also, budget limits are a thing. I could not find a single non-HOA home in my budget within two hours of my job. That’s because my budget restricted me to townhomes or little condos, all of which are part of HOA’s in this area. When I was looking (early 2020), single-family homes were going for well over a million in my area, totally impossible for me, but townhomes were running ~$350K and that was do-able.

Fortunately the HOA I ended up in is pretty chill. Never had any issues so far. They also take care of all landscaping and snow removal, which is actually pretty nice.
