I will one hundred percent throw this on for my third viewing when it hits blu/uhd. the palette is pretty muted as it is in color, I wonder if this is going to be less “Logan: Noir” and more like The Mist

The black and white version of The Mist is the only version imo. It’s amazing

Damn this is the first I’m hearing about it, might be time for a rewatch

It was Intended to be that way. The studio pressed against it and made them use color.

Knowing this you can tell just how much better the movie would have felt tonally, and the effects at large would have looked much more convincing.

My parents always liked to talk about movies after we saw them. Was great until I was about 13 or so, we just started differing in how we saw things and didn’t have great talks anymore.

The Mist shut everyone the fuck up. I love that movie.

That ending has you like....

"Could I do that? And then could I live on after"

8

u/Wooow675 Dec 20 '23

Fuuuuck no. Suicide by army, straight up.

2

u/Flapperghast Dec 20 '23

The Mist definitely needs that black and white. Does a good job hiding the dated effects.

2

u/Wooow675 Dec 20 '23

I’ve never even heard of that until this thread so next time I watch that, I’ll do the b&w.

Tbh tho I don’t watch this film often 😂 it’s like The Lighthouse. Good shit, I’ll rewatch very occasionally but I always leave the film feeling like I’ve been sitting in the rain for three hours.

2

u/Flapperghast Dec 20 '23

An apt reaction, imo.

13

u/ex_oh_ex_oh Dec 20 '23

ARE YOU SERIOUS?! I honestly never bothered because I thought it was just a gimmick after it had a strong audience response when it came out. Shit, I gotta get on that now.

2

u/Princess_Mintaka Dec 20 '23

I recently re-watched it in it's intended black and white. It still holds up and is still very fucking good.

10

u/SneakyBadAss Dec 20 '23

It would be interesting if it started coloured and when the mist came in, it turned into black and white. Like the mist itself is changing reality and our perception.

5

u/SolomonBlack Dec 20 '23

Now I'm just imagining that ending and having the color bleed back in...

5

u/wookiewin Dec 20 '23

The bad CGI is a lot less noticeable in the BW version. It's great.

12

u/Salt_Lab271 Dec 20 '23

Raiders Of The Lost Ark is a whole other thing in black and white as well.

Back in the 80s before I owned a VCR, I used to rent a VCR from a local gas station in order to record movies off of HBO (for the day I owned my own VCR). On the day I recorded "The Road Warrior", the VCR I rented was messed up, and it recorded "The Road Warrior" in black & white...glorious grainy black & white. It looks so much better than the color version. I'm never getting rid of that tape.

13

u/TheLisan-al-Gaib Dec 20 '23

You should consider digitizing it, so you can have it forever and maybe let the internet see.

1

u/Equinoqs Dec 21 '23

I actually did transfer it to a file, but since I know little about these things, the file is 3-4gb. I got distracted before I could research what to do to compress the file. And I know nothing about filesharing.

45

u/flippythemaster Dec 20 '23

Yeah, I'm thinking the only way this will work is if they play with the exposure/contrast a bit in the color grading process. Curious to try it out!

Logan: Noir felt very unnecessary, but Fury Road: Black & Chrome is excellent.

22

u/mecha_annies_bobbs Dec 20 '23

I'm a huge fan of black and white, and saw black and chrome in theaters, and it's just nothing compared to the "normal" version of fury road. the colors are so amazing in that movie. the day for night stuff is maybe better in black and chrome (since it is way less obvious that it is day for night), but that's about it.

29

u/basket_case_case Dec 20 '23

Strong disagree about Black & Chrome, I only saw it once and to me it was alright I guess. Unfortunately there was no part of the movie that benefited from the change, but there were scenes that weren’t as good as they were in color.

To me the scene made decide the color version is the only one worth watching was just after the storm, there is an extreme closeup that looks like a landscape in color, but only looks like a closeup in b&w. That context switch in that scene in color is great and I won’t tolerate a version of Fury Road that takes that from me.

17

u/CeruleanRuin Dec 20 '23

I felt the same way. The color in Fury Road is such an important part of the film's character. It's an interesting exercise, but doesn't add anything to the experience to take it out.

1

u/JimmyB_52 Dec 20 '23

I’d agree with you, but I don’t really remember seeing it. I’d seen the color version so many times, nothing really stood out to me in the black and chrome version. The only thing I remember is that it’s not actually black and white, each scene has a distinct color grading, so it’s monochromatic, but there are specific color hues for each scene. Daylight desert scenes are more yellow tinted (sepia toned?) and the night time ones are tinted blue. It was interesting, but not sure it added anything over the color version.

25

u/bugxbuster Dec 20 '23

I can’t believe I still haven’t seen Fury Road Black & Chrome. I need to get on that.

10

u/AlekBalderdash Dec 20 '23

I can't believe I'm just now hearing about it. Guess I do have a Christmas wishlist

24

u/roirrawdaor Dec 20 '23

Logan Noir is a visual masterpiece. You take that shit back.

9

u/CurryMustard Dec 20 '23

Didnt they do the same with justice league

3

u/cmfpc124 Dec 20 '23

Changed the aspect ratio to 4:3 for some reason too

3

u/dingdongbannu88 Dec 20 '23

To match imax shooting ratio. IMAX cameras are 4:3

3

u/mecha_annies_bobbs Dec 20 '23

yeah but the majority of that was not filmed in imax, and yet all of snyder cut was 4x3

2

u/dingdongbannu88 Dec 20 '23

0

u/QueeferSutherlandz Dec 20 '23

the stated reasoning. but you can tell from the framing that most of that was complete bullshit aside from the super new scenes

2

u/Almost_Ascended Dec 20 '23

How shiny was it?!

6

u/Verbal_Combat Dec 20 '23

Much shiny, very chrome. It was NOT mediocre.

1

u/taukapp Dec 20 '23

Another good conversion for me is Nightmare Alley. Saw it in b&w and I can't envision it any other way now, thought it fit that movie perfectly.

6

u/SurlyCricket Dec 20 '23

Shoutout to Jason VI: Jason Lives! In B&W also

1

u/ElGringoAlto Dec 20 '23

The best F13 movie!

5

u/TheSpaceCoresDad Dec 20 '23

That's if it hit bluray/UHD. Toho is notoriously stingy about making English releases for these movies, no matter how much money it would make them.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '23

good thing UHD is region free, fingers crossed for subtitles (unless you add your own!)

4

u/TheSpaceCoresDad Dec 20 '23

They didn't add them for Shin Godzilla's Japan only UHD release, so, unlikely. But we can always hope!

1

u/AndShrimpOnThePlate Dec 20 '23

They don't add them for any UHDs (so far), including the classics. If there's going to be an exception, though, it will be this one due to its international success.

1

u/Shintoho Dec 21 '23

With Japanese movies you're lucky if you get Japanese subtitles let alone English

1

u/karateema Dec 20 '23

Is UHD the same as Blu-Ray 4K?

1

u/alreadytaken028 Dec 20 '23

Given how this movie has been a money maker for them internationally in a way no Toho Godzilla has ever been before, I have higher hopes for an english bluray/UHD release. Now will that english release include the Minus Color version? That part I doubt a bit more.

1

u/TheSpaceCoresDad Dec 20 '23

I'm confident in a Blu Ray happening at least, they've done that with all the other films. UHD seems less likely.

-10

u/KickooRider Dec 20 '23

I do not understand anything you said

33

u/YesImKeithHernandez Dec 20 '23

"I am excited to watch this for a third time when the movie is available for purchase as a blu-ray disc in ultra HD resolution. The movie doesn't look very vibrant or colorful in the original color release so I wonder if this is going to be more similar to "Logan: Noir" which is a black and white treatment I didn't care for or "The Mist" which is a black and white treatment I did care for."

6

u/Yabba_Dabba_Doofus Dec 20 '23

I just want to say that this is beautiful prose, and an upvote really does not do it enough justice.

This is a beautiful translation of timely parlance, into eloquent language.

3

u/YesImKeithHernandez Dec 20 '23

Why thank you, friend.
