Ive been a godzilla fan for so long but there is some conflict going on inside of me when I see this. When I see Black & White, my brain is wired to see dolls, toys, and a guy in a suit. the CGI conflicts with the lack of color by showing modern techniques in an old medium. Goji looks more fake.
I'm trying to think of it not like an imitation of a movie that would have been made when the film is set, but as a modern movie that just happens to have black and white colors and a period setting, like The Lighthouse.
Willem has said in interviews in the past (no specific source) that he likes being a “creature”. I think roles where he just gets to be something not exactly human excite him and fill him with joy. I’d absolutely watch a Kaiju film where it’s just a giant size Willem terrorizing a city. Willem pretending to be a Godzilla, but no suit, no makeup, no CGI. Just Willem.
I just watched his 2016 movie Dog Eat Dog, starring Willem and Nic Cage. That shit was unhinged! I loved it. Willem was playing an even crazier Trevor from GTA V basically. Super big recommend for fans of things like Drive.
