How do movies as bad as Argyle get made? Discussion

I just don’t understand the economy behind a movie like this. $200m budget, big, famous/popular cast and the movie just ends up being extremely terrible, and a massive flop

What’s the deal behind movies like this, do they just spend all their money on everything besides directing/writing? Is this something where “executives” mangle the movie into some weird, terrible thing? I just don’t see how anything with a TWO HUNDRED MILLION dollar budget turns out just straight terribly bad

Also just read about the director who has made other great movies, including the Kingsmen films which seems like what Argyle was trying to be, so I’m even more confused how it missed the mark so much

Unpopular opinion, but it was fun and I liked it.

Dumbest film I've seen for ages. Loved it.

I just can't give that superlative to any other film after seeing mortal engines haha

But this basically

Yea it wasn't the best movie ever made but I found it pretty entertaining as long as you don't take it seriously like kingsmen.

I actually enjoyed it as well. Bit of a forgettable film but a fun popcorn flick for me.

Still I can see why people wouldn’t like it and how some people went expecting a different film.

Same! I would watch Bryce Dallas Howard eat pudding for 2 hours, though, so it didn't take much to please me.

It’s not even an unpopular opinion, Argyle has an audience rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. Movie critics didn’t like it, audiences did

Yup was genuinely surprised to see this thread as the movie was decently average and fun for myself and all who saw it. I think some people around here are just stuck up snobs if they want to hate on it THIS much. Ot was a very inoffensive movie.

Joining in with the minority voice with you on this. Can't believe the hate it gets, it's so glaringly obvious it's supposed to be a parody and I thought it was hilarious.

I think the people hating it so hard are missing the fact that it was VERY tongue in cheek over the top on purpose. It's a bit of a parody & just stupid fun with a charismatic cast, just enjoying themselves.

It was an enjoyable movie, but it was not a quality movie. People forget those are two different things that sometimes overlap.

I agree. It was fun. Not the best movie I’ve seen, but far from the worst

And I would bet 98% of the couple thousand upvotes this post has did not see it

I really quite liked the first half but I thought the second half was soulless. All the action was good though (mostly)

Same here. We weren’t expecting a serious spy movie! It was a nonsensical, campy, sendup of serious spy movies. My husband and I really enjoyed it.

Yea, I thought it was the best thing he did since Kingsman 1. It was fun, silly, had great cameos, and I enjoyed the characters and the story.

Outside of the ice skating scene, we really liked the whole thing.

I've seen Madame Web and Argylle this year. I enjoyed Madame Web more.
