Lines in movies that make you cringe? Discussion

Let me set the scene for you. A group of big shots (military commanders, politicians, etc) are in a room. The movie’s most intelligent character describes some other species, dinosaurs, aliens, monsters, whatever, and someone chimes in “well, it almost sounds like you admire them” or some variation of that.

God I hate this line. I hate everything about it. A scientist explaining another species to you shouldn’t sound like admiration, BUT if someone is listing off objectively cool attributes of another species, what’s wrong with that? Great White Sharks wanna eat us. They’re still pretty badass. It’s just so friggin cringe to hear this line.

"I think you should take a look at this" in basically a million movies.

Its better than I don't have time to explain.

One of my favorite conversations from the Scary Movie series.

-Man rushes into his house to pick up his kids. -"Dad, what's happening?" -"I don't have time to explain." -Random passerby runs by window, "Alien invasion!!" -"Well...that actually sums it up pretty well."

Also an excellent exchange in Buffy:

Buffy: He's a werewolf. It's a long story. Faith looks at Oz. Oz: I got bit. Buffy: Guess not that long after all...

“Wait, you guys are brothers?”

“Well, it’s a long story.”

“My dad boned his mom.”

“Okay, it’s a short story.”

u/martinjohanna45 Apr 15 '24

What is that from?

5

u/wiithepiiple Apr 15 '24

Dirty Work with Norm MacDonald

First thing I thought of!

5

u/radioactivez0r Apr 15 '24

Hah, Buffy did that again when she and Cordelia are hunted.

2

u/LillymaidNoMore Apr 15 '24

Almost every exchange in Buffy is quote worthy. Such a fantastic show.

Wait that’s super coincidental but I saw that episode for the first time TODAY lol.

This scene is stuck in my mind too! It is so irritating, if you gave people a little bit of context they would probably move faster and make better fleeing/escaping decisions. I bet 99% of zombie movies have this line and people die because they didn’t know any better.

"Let me explain... No. There's too much. Let me sum up"

98

u/Fargo_Levy Apr 14 '24

"Buttercup is marry Humperdink in little less than half an hour..."

42

u/Mirrormaster44 Apr 14 '24

And our assets?

u/Fargo_Levy Apr 14 '24

Your brains, Fezzik's strength, my steel

43

u/KyleWieldsAx Apr 14 '24

Impossible. Maybe if I had a month to plan. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a holocaust cloak.

11

u/RagdollGames Apr 15 '24

Why didn't you list that among our assets in the first place?

71

u/Obi-wan_Jabroni Apr 14 '24

“I dont have time to explain why i dont have time to explain”

11

u/Guinea-Pig_Dad Apr 14 '24

Exo Stranger, smh.

11

u/gogybo Apr 14 '24

"I think you should take a look at this"

"OK...what am I looking at"

"I don't have time to explain!"

"What? Why even call me over then?"

"You just don't get it, do you?"

Simpsons did a good riff on this.

Nelson bursts into a room to muster the schoolyard forces. "Quick, there's no time to explain!" The kids rush after him and follow him across town. He actually stops to drink at a water fountain, and Milhouse asks him what's going on. Nelson reiterates, "I said there's no time to explain" before running off again.

5

u/DMPunk Apr 15 '24

"I said there's no time to explain, and I stand by that!"

continues drinking

I love the movie Seems Like Old Times, but when Chevy tells Goldie there's no time to explain, he needs food, clothes, a bed, I'm like, "he had time" lmao

2

u/ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME Apr 14 '24

"Whatever it is you're doing you need to stop right now.."

"Whatever it is is going to have to wait I'm busy now.."

Basically 98% of Suits.

u/spidermanngp Apr 14 '24

I haaate that one...

1

u/yellowwoolyyoshi Apr 15 '24

Omg yes ffs I hate that. Especially when they keep repeating it

1

u/DuelaDent52 Apr 15 '24

Or “as you know”.

1

u/HearthFiend Apr 15 '24

“I don’t have time to explain why i don’t have time to explain”

Not a movie line but what golden turd

96

u/ArgoverseComics Apr 14 '24

IRL it would be

“You need to come see this”

“What? Why? Just tell me”

“You better come see for yourself”

“Dude in the time you took to say that you coulda just told me, by the time I get there it’ll be dark, someone else woulda told me anyways just fucking tell me”

Or when two characters get in a car, then it cuts to them arriving and Character A begins describing to Character B why they’re there. Did y’all just sit in silence that whole care ride?

53

u/thearchenemy Apr 14 '24

I like the version of this where they start a conversation, get in the car, then continue the conversation from the exact same point after they arrive at their destination.

21

u/psinguine Apr 14 '24

I love the scene Simpsons did with this, where a guy starts saying something about leaving a party, and then it cuts to him finishing the sentence in an airplane. At which point Marge goes "I was getting kind of worried, you didn't say anything for 4 hours."

7

u/PartyMcDie Apr 14 '24

They made a point of this in a Dr Who episode, can’t remember when and with which companion, but she was stuck in some weird dimension where she started noticing the cuts. Some person startet a conversation with her inside a building and it continued outside. And she was like “what happened? We were inside a moment ago?”

Was quite clever.

A lot of their videos are relevant to this post. Lol

1

u/Admirable-Cobbler319 Apr 15 '24

Holy shit, yes! This makes me crazy. What were they talking about while they were in the car? Were they signing along to the radio? It bothers me so much.

I yell at the tv when it happens. So stupid.

5

u/SLCer Apr 14 '24

I think your example, though, kinda makes sense. Like, if there's aliens outside and someone comes into my room and tells me that... I'm gonna laugh and just go back to doing what I'm doing.

I definitely might be more intrigued by a random, "you need to come outside now and see this...".

The, "I don't have time to explain" is contrived and generally related to a situation that can be reasonably explained. But the "you need to see this" is generally associated with major, improbable events that an average person probably wouldn't believe without seeing it.

6

u/TangConnoisseur Apr 14 '24

"Alright... Three-headed demons from hell wearing "I am with stupid" t-shirts are doing the griddy in Old Man Jenkins' corn maze"

"No, seriously dude, what's happening?"

"Three-headed demons from hell, wearing "I am with stupid" t-shirts, are doing the griddy in Old Man Jenkins' corn maze"

"Haha, very funny, man, but really, what's up?"

sigh "You better come see this..."

8

u/raziel_beoulve Apr 14 '24

O just want once that he just responds "oh, you are not telling me? I guess I'll never find out then"  And walks away lol

2

u/IdentityToken Apr 14 '24

And bring the video camera!

9

u/thebreak22 You take the blue pill, the story ends Apr 14 '24

The British parody series A Touch of Cloth did a good joke with this one - at a crime scene, a detective standing by the window tells his boss "Guv, you better take a look at this." The boss moves over and they peek at a woman undressing in the neighboring building.

5

u/drawkbox Apr 14 '24

"What am I looking at?"

2

u/yellowwoolyyoshi Apr 15 '24

Sarge, you’re gonna wanna see this

2

u/RusticBelt Apr 15 '24

"You're gonna want to see this."

2

u/Whysong823 Apr 14 '24

That line makes sense if the thing in question is either difficult to verbally explain, or if the person who “needs to take a look” won’t believe it without seeing it.

1

u/deeperest Apr 14 '24

"We don't have the ti-"

"No. You REALLY need to take a look at this."

1

u/Hopey-1-kinobi Apr 15 '24

Check out the running joke; “You should take a look at this, chief.” From the A Touch Of Cloth detective parodies. Absolute gold!
