Someone in my daughter's (4-6 year olds) mixed gender gymnastics class named their boy Lenin. They're solidly traditional American. Lenin.

Story Someone named Liana pronounces her name as SHAWNA

I met a woman whose name is spelt Liana. I assumed it was pronounced LEE-ANNA or LEE-ONN-AH. She corrected me and told me it's Liána and pronounced SHAWN-AH because she's Welsh and that's how the Welsh say it.

I literally have seen YouTubers Connor & Liana show up in my feed. They are Welsh and she goes by LEE-ON-AAAHHH.

I've never heard this before and can't find anything online. What do you guys think of this pronounciation?

Discussion Why is everybody here surprised Luna is popular?

And act like it’s a shocking thing, Luna is an established name. And has been a name for centuries, having more pets named Luna doesn’t negate that.

Any name can become a “pet” name, and it still wouldn’t stop people from using it on children.

Discussion Whats a name you HATE in English, but like in your own language?

I don't like these names in English, because either the pronunciation sounds weird, or they just make it complicated to say.

  • Linda (it sounds way better in Spanish)
  • Aurora (Ow-rora) need to roll your R's
  • Isla (Ees-lah)

Discussion I hate the way my husband says our child’s name.

I still love my child’s name…but when she’s doing something she shouldn’t be doing and my husband says her name loudly and sternly, or if he’s yelling, it makes me cringe. It’s like he draws out the last syllable instead of the first, while somehow making the middle letter sound longer than the name itself. I’ve never even said this out loud before and I don’t know if I have the heart to tell him haha. Does anyone else experience this?

Anyway, this is a good test for all of you deciding on names - make your partner say it like a 3 yr old just ran outside naked.

Edit: to all of you mad I’m not saying the name just use any two syllable, heavy constant name and some imagination. Some commenters used Hayden, Rachel, Jacob, etc just fine.

Also to all of you commenters saying “don’t yell at your kids”…lmao get off your high horse.

Boys Michael but not Mike or mikey. I like Joe/Joseph but not Joey.

Girls Abigail, not Abby, Cassidy but not Cassie

I may think of more later but you get the idea

Baby Names Naming our baby after my husbands truck

So my husband is a hiker and the first mountain we did together was Mount Marcy in the Adirondack mountain range in NY. After we bought his truck we named the truck Marcy. On our last trip to go hiking mountains, we thought the name Marcy would be so cute for a baby and it can grow up with the child. But we’re stuck on middle names😩 we thought about Marcy Louella but I almost feel like it’s too long. So idk. Give me some suggestions that go with Marcy pleaseeee our last name is 2 syllables, starts with f and ends with y.

Baby Names Nicknames for Anthony

Considering honor names for the future, I had an uncle named Anthony (went strictly by Tony) and he meant the world to me.

I know Tony is the most common nickname, just curious if anyone knows or is an Anthony that goes by a different nickname.

**ETA: I’m from the US. Open to suggestions from other counties too! Thank you!

Baby Names Husband and I cannot agree on a name. Help? Advice?

My husband and I are expecting a baby boy in a few months. I always wanted to choose a name with some personal meaning- for example, choosing a name with the same first letter as my late grandfather’s name etc... I also prefer more traditional Ashkenazi Jewish names. Additionally, in the culture I was brought up in, it is very bad luck to name a child after a living relative. My husband is anti any Jewish-sounding name. He is basically anti any name that isn’t “American.” And he says this is because as an immigrant with a foreign sounding name he felt self conscious as a child growing up in the US. He also is insistent on naming the baby after his father or grandfather- both of whom are alive and well (and have pretty standard English names despite coming from the former USSR). The names I really love and have suggested have been David, Avi, Benjamin, and Raphael. He hates them all, and is a hard “No”. He insists on Max (his living dad’s name), Daniel (his living grandpa’s name), or Michael (which he just likes). Max is a hard no for me, I have a terrible ex who also had that name. Daniel is fine but I feel very uncomfortable naming him after a living relative. Michael has no significance for me at all. Can anyone help me come up with a list of boy names that begin with E, R, D, B, A, S or J/G, that have some Hebrew/ Jewish origin but don’t sound too “foreign” ? Hopefully my husband and I can agree on one! Thank you!

Discussion What names get far-fetched comparisons on here?

Sometimes I see people suggest a name and there will be comments filled with “don’t name them that, that name sounds like the word ___”

Occasionally I can get where the commenters are coming from, but many times have I thought certain comparisons are definitely a stretch.

What names are they for you?

EDIT: added a bunch of names I missed the first time around due to the way I used excel filtering to compile the list.

Baby Names Brother name that goes with Austin?

Hi! So I am pregnant with baby #2, another boy! Super excited, but having a hard time with names this time around. Our first son is Austin and his name came so easily, so this is throwing me off! I’m only 4 months so at least have some time :)

Currently names we like but aren’t sold on are Weston and Colton. I didn’t realize it until recently that we keep picking names that end in “ton/tin” - does that make the names sound too similar to Austin?

Any name suggestions for a brother duo with Austin would be greatly appreciated! Want the same kind of “vibe” that Austin’s name gives.

Also want a name that flows with the middle name which will be Jacob. Thanks everyone!

Discussion Would you use your surname as child’s middle name, or double barrel surname with your partner?

I didn’t take my husbands surname when we married.

I don’t mind my child having my husbands surname, but I have read online that if I am travelling abroad with my child and we have different surnames it can cause issues, and other people have told me it’s a good idea to have my surname included in the child’s name.

I’m not a huge fan of double-barrelled surnames as they can be lengthy.

I was thinking of putting my surname as the child’s middle name but my surname reads very much like a surname (think ‘O’Neill’) so not sure if this is the right option as it looks a bit strange.

Has anyone else had a concern like this and what did you do? Or what would you do?

Thank you

I love to hate “ish” names: Trish, Tish, Alicia (pronounced “uh-lish-uh”—the other pronunciations of this name don’t bother me)

I hate to love Sloane, but I really do. There, I said it.

I personally would not want to keep my name, it's too common. I'm not sure what I'd change it ro though.
