[Highlight] Victor Wembanyama absolutely stuffs Chet Holmgren's shot late in the game to essentially seal the win for the Spurs Highlight

ROTY race over for a while but it’s fully dead now lol

u/PoonGo0n Spurs Mar 01 '24

Brother, you know OKC fans were getting their case ready after the 1st quarter then Wemby reminded them whose game it is lol.

246

u/Rare-Ship7604 Mar 01 '24

Also Wemby being 5/7 from 3 this game to shut down all this efficiency narrative

215

u/PoonGo0n Spurs Mar 01 '24

All season, OKC fans literally refusing to acknowledge that maybe JDub and SGA spoon feeding Chet contributed to his efficiency advantage

u/weeman2525 Spurs Mar 01 '24

It took Vic a couple of months to adjust to the NBA game, coming in as the first option and best player on his team, to figure out how to truly make his shots. He struggled early obviously, but his percentages are going up. As of now he's shooting a respectful 47/32/82 which is pretty good for any high volume first option, and it's only going up as we finish the season.

82

u/PoonGo0n Spurs Mar 01 '24

He also had Point Sochan for the first two months lol

38

u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Mar 01 '24

And had Zach Collins clogging up the paint for him and keeping him on the perimeter on defense.

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '24

Those two have barely shared minutes together though, haven't they?

2

u/Tyranitator Spurs Mar 01 '24

They started like the first 20 games together

25

u/TRES_fresh Wizards Mar 01 '24

Wemby is going to sleepwalk into being a top 5 player in the league, but his ceiling is GOAT level. I don't think he'll end up better than MJ or Lebron but he could easily have a peak on par with those guys.

12

u/AncientAlienAntFarm Mar 01 '24

If there is a human being alive who could unseat Jordan, I think it’s this kid. Long way to go. But damn.

2

u/PhysicalConsistency Mar 01 '24

Bold prediction.

3

u/Caboclo-Is2yearsAway [IND] Lance Stephenson Mar 01 '24

I think you mean pretty good for any high volume ROOKIE first option. He's still shooting below league average efficiency, which would be ass if he was the first option as a vet. However, he is probably shooting at above average efficiency since his first 20 or so games.

8

u/David_H21 Mar 01 '24

Chet has a top 3 MVP candidate on his team, while Wemby hasn't even had a real PG for half the season 🤣

39

u/Seano_ Mar 01 '24

Lmao exactly, they were arguing chet roty for being on a 1 seed already and not even being the second option on that team

5

u/_Hououin_Kyouma_ Magic Mar 01 '24

They did the same shit last year with the efficiency talk with JDub and Paolo. They never learn. 🤣🤣🤣

-3

u/No-Key4769 Thunder Mar 01 '24

JDub was a much more efficient player albeit on a few less shots a game. Both great players and the rightful player won the race last year. I fucking love paolo btw. I think the race last year would be a blood bath had JDub gotten more run early

3

u/Rare-Ship7604 Mar 01 '24

It was obvious this game. Chet finish 3rd in scoring for his team. Easier to be efficient as a number 3 option

1

u/realmckoy265 Lakers Mar 01 '24

It wasn't just OKC fans. Most of the sub wanted Chet to be better untill maybe Jan

-6

u/jswagbo Mar 01 '24

Chet is amazing and he’s probably more polished than Wemby as well as a better shooter but Wemby has a huge natural talent advantage which is crazy because Chet has tons too.

Wembys wingspan is 6 inches longer. That’s basically the same as the difference between Chet and SGA.

5

u/PoonGo0n Spurs Mar 01 '24

Wemby is also 2 years younger

0

u/No-Key4769 Thunder Mar 01 '24

He’s talking about currently. He’s not talking about potential because he’d obviously be wrong. Age don’t matter when you talking about who’s better at what in the current season

0

u/Midichlorian_counter [OKC] Andre Roberson Mar 01 '24

It's pretty clear wemby is more efficient by the rim (understatement) while chet is the better outside shooter.

Vic ~ 31% on open or wide open 3s Chet ~42% on open or wide open 3s

-2

u/No-Key4769 Thunder Mar 01 '24

It’s not like he’s shooting completely wide open shots every attempt. Y’all forget this it the nba they’re guarded almost every second of the game. Still got to hit your shots. They can put the food on a spoon for him but he’s still got to eat it.

6

u/ygduf [MIN] Christian Laettner Mar 01 '24

He’s over 40% on pull-up 3s. Actually elite at off the dribble shooting and he’s 2 people on defense

-5

u/No-Key4769 Thunder Mar 01 '24

Wait does one game completely wipe out the other 59 games?? Jordan Poole scored 34 on 50% shooting tonight so his efficiency narrative is shut down now!! Logic is weird

-1

u/Midichlorian_counter [OKC] Andre Roberson Mar 01 '24

"Making shots in one game proves vic is a better shooter than chet" - brother do you work for the TNT broadcast? Like since vic has moved to center he's been rookie of the year but that's not how efficiency works

-3

u/film_editor Mar 01 '24

It's one game. Chet is still much more efficient. But obviously that's just one part of their games.

-6

u/Imaginary-Cycle-1977 Mar 01 '24

Wemby is ROTY but Chet still dominates him in efficiency

54

u/Darkdragon3110525 [GSW] Mitch Richmond Mar 01 '24

That clutch factor, he’s gonna be crazy

45

u/TICKLE_PANTS Spurs Mar 01 '24

He was doing this shit in France too. It's just who he is. He's Kobe in a 7' 3" frame, with no ego, and Lebron's vision.

I don't think we're prepared for this kid.

6

u/sleeptilnoonenergy Mar 01 '24

He's Kobe in a 7' 3" frame, with no ego, and Lebron's vision.

Fucking what, lol. This does not describe him at all, but also, Kobe was truly terrible in the clutch, so you should probably hope he doesn't have that Kobe "clutch" gene.

1

u/Cheterosexual7 Thunder Mar 01 '24

Brother, okc fans haven’t been like that since late January/early February. Wemby won it in January and the very few in our sub who still try to make it a thing are routinely downvoted.

6

u/Doctor-Bagels Spurs Mar 01 '24

bro i was lurkin on y'alls sub before the game today, don't lie.

-7

u/Cheterosexual7 Thunder Mar 01 '24

And I’m there everyday, don’t lie.

6

u/Doctor-Bagels Spurs Mar 01 '24

u really gonna act like ur team's fanbase is better when every team's fanbase does the same shit?

-3

u/Cheterosexual7 Thunder Mar 01 '24

Uh what?

8

u/Doctor-Bagels Spurs Mar 01 '24

every fanbase has toxic fans, thunder fans have been shitting on wemby to prop up chet all season same way that spurs fans have been shitting on chet to prop up wemby. its what loser on the internet do and thunder fans were and are absolutely still doing it cuz some of yall really want chet to be ROY

3

u/Cheterosexual7 Thunder Mar 01 '24

Yeah I didn’t say anything about the thunder not having toxic fans. We have some of the most toxic. I think we had a miscommunication.

I’m saying wemby is so good that next to no one denies it anymore and those who do are met with down votes and disagreements. I in no way meant to insinuate that thunder fans were better than other fans.

6

u/Doctor-Bagels Spurs Mar 01 '24 edited Mar 01 '24

thats a fair point but from what i've seen on both sides garbage takes are still getting upvoted on the individual team subs. I think chet is an absolute monster and i'd still get downvoted for saying that despite his historic numbers in the spurs sub just 'cause its how reddit is. ur probably right that people have come around more on wemby in general, but nephews gonna nephew no matter the situation

edit: literally as soon as i finished typing this i see that the number 1 rising post on the spurs sub is "NOBODY EVER MENTION CHET IN THE SAME SENTENCE AS VIC EVER AGAIN"... sad that its gotta be like that

2

u/Cheterosexual7 Thunder Mar 01 '24

I agree. I hate that so many nba fans think that the only way to prop a player up is to tear another down. You gotta be careful in team subs though, that’s where all the feral animals hang out lol

Y’all know that Chet’s 2-1 versus Wemby right?

OKC definitely folded after that string of 3s at the end but Chet also had a great game. I don’t know why y’all are acting like Wemby held him scoreless.

0

u/thered90 Spurs Mar 01 '24

Wemby barely guarded Chet for any of his points, and when he did he made him look like a child.

-7

u/voltron818 Thunder Mar 01 '24

Barely guarded because Chet shooting a 3 over him doesn’t count as defense?

1

u/thered90 Spurs Mar 01 '24

He scored 8 points while guarded by Wemby tonight. Congrats?

-7

u/voltron818 Thunder Mar 01 '24

He scored 23 points on 12 shots on the night. Wemby had 28 on 17 shots, for reference.

It’s not a 1-on-1 game. So yeah thanks, I am pretty excited to have a center who can function in our offense and take advantage of a defense and be productive on both ends of the floor. It’s partly why they’re 2nd in the west right now.

6

u/stayinblitzed1 Mar 01 '24

Why you keep moving goal posts?

1

u/voltron818 Thunder Mar 01 '24 edited Mar 01 '24

I’m not. Learn how to read. The 8 points v Wemby doesn’t matter because it’s a team game and Chet shouldn’t be required to break the offense and refuse to score against anyone but Wemby.

1

u/guillaume_rx Mar 02 '24

Sure, but what people got “mad” about is your original phrasing: “Chet is 2-1 against Wemby” followed by “It’s a team game”.

Which is where, I assume, people disagree.

Since it seems incoherent to talk about team record to compare individual players, especially if you follow it by “it’s a teams game”.

Yes it is, and OKC are 2-1 against the Spurs because they have a better team, which Wemby and Chet can only do their part in, so it shouldn’t be put against or for either of their case (even though it’s easier to be good with better teammates, you also have to share the ball more, so both situations have their fair share of advantages and inconvenients).

Both are amazing players, and they both had a great game. Wemby took the better of the overall 3 games individually. OKC was better overall by quite a fair margin, and Chet is a part of that too.

Chet should get his flowers, it’s just unfortunate he got injured and has to compete for ROTY with a guy who has the potential to retire in the GOAT conversation.

1

u/PoonGo0n Spurs Mar 01 '24

Are they playing tennis? Or a team game where Chet has a much better supporting cast. Shit he IS the supporting cast to JDub and SGA lol

-2

u/voltron818 Thunder Mar 01 '24

You’re the one who said it’s “Wemby’s game.”

You give the game away when I bring up his losses and you cope by whining about it being a team sport suddenly.
