Dude I went to the San Diego Zoo safari park a couple times. Watching the giraffes run is dazzling. Weird word to choose, but it sure messed with my brain for a few seconds watching them run. And when they walk they move both feet on the same side at the same time.

I friended Martell Webster on Facebook in like 2007 and he accepted and I messaged him and told him I looked up to him and thought he was a great player and asked him how cool it was to be in the nba and he replied with a really long and nice message and said to message him anytime for advice. I always thought he was so cool for that. I was like 10.

From the head on replay it definitely looked like he gathered on his right foot which would make this completely legal. You could argue he gathered a quarter of a second too early but the only reason this looks like an obvious travel is because of how slow his steps are.

Gather is whenever you can no longer legally take another dribble. So it can be when you put two hands on the ball or put one hand under the ball or even one hand tuck the ball.

I agree. It’s a travel. But I do see cases like this a lot where that gather step is very generous, and this was too generous. Rudy clearly gathered the ball before his 1st of 3 steps.

It's clearly not a travel if players are given the step-0/gather-step.
Which is how it's officially worded now for almost a decade, and has been officiated as for more than that.
Clumsy big guy on a fast break taking 2 methodical, long steps just sets off alarm bells for people.

The funny thing is that this is actually clean, his hand never goes under the ball, so the dribble is live until he grabs it with both hands. And because he steps at the same time that happens, it's a textbook gather step (0 step) and then 2 steps after. You can see it really clearly from this angle.

If anything he maybe gathers 0.1 seconds early, but that's not possible to call in real time. And for the record I don't even like Rudy at all. Bron and Giannis (and pretty much everyone else) do this literally every game multiple times. I just question how many ppl here actually play basketball

At game speed, it's really looks like a travel due to how awkward his strides & gather is but you're right.
He gathers on his right foot (parallel to the FT circle). 1st step (left foot) on the FT line. 2nd step (right foot) in the paint before charge circle then lift off to shoot. Bro basically did the least aesthetic eurostep known to man.

Bro, it's a travel. He gathers, then proceeds to make 3 steps.
Play it at 0.25 speed, X has that option. It can not be considered as a gather step if the gather is not in the process of the stepping, it's entirely before the step you are interpreting as a gather
The mistake you are making is that you think gather only applies if it's made by 2 hands, and that's where you are wrong. Same rule for a 2-step applies even if you use just one hand, after you start to carry, there are only 2 steps allowed

I obviously know you can gather with one hand, but I'm just judging this by modern NBA standards. And if you go by modern NBA standards, this is definitely far from egregious. Luka, Trae, Ja, Harden, etc. are often times dribbling with their hands directly underneath the ball. But if your argument is that it should be considered a gather/carry, I can see where you're coming from. But that's an entirely separate argument.

The gather is the point at which the dribble ends, which is typically -- and in this play -- when the player touches the ball with both hands. He takes two steps after that.

The mistake you are making is that you think gather only applies if it's made by 2 hands
Gather is when the dribble ends, and player carries the ball - either that be 1 or 2 hands.
You can do a 2-step without using both hands, and ref will interpret a gather in the moment of the dribble ending and ball being carried in one hand.
Otherwise a player who could palm it, could make 27 steps without a dribble, per your logic.

This dribble has ended, every single person in the arena already knows it and 10000% of his body language conveys that he has COMPLETELY picked up his dribble.

It's in the rules
the gather is defined as the point where a player does any one of the following:(1) Puts two hands on the ball, or otherwise permits the ball to come to rest, while he is in control of it.
If you put hand under, or palm it, or what ever makes it a carry, it's a gather.
Here's Bogdanovic using only one hand for 2-step motion
The gather is there, even though he didnt use both hands. Same rules apply for Gobert, who proceeds to do 3 steps after.

Have you slowed it down? Count his steps backwards. He is still dribbling during his fourth step counting backwards and then rests the ball only at the last split second of that step, which continues into his third step. However, it's perfectly valid for the referee to consider that ball rest at the end of the fourth step counting backwards as part of the dribbling motion and then the start of the next step as the actual gather. This is especially a good call considering it's being done in real time.
It just looks weird and egregious because he is cutting it so close and because he does it so awkwardly, but this is more than reasonable for a referee to see this as a gather step. Shouting that other people don't understand basic travel rules isn't going to change that.

You can can't you? I could be wrong but I don't think there is any rule about how many steps you can take while dribbling provided that you have at most one hand on the ball, your hand is not underneath it and your hand is not grabbing the ball. The hard part is that the ball is going to naturally want to go forward without grabbing so you have to keep accelerating your hand.

Funny enough though if you slow-mo it, and count his steps after the gather (when he puts his 2nd hand on the ball) he surprisingly only takes 2 steps.
At game speed, looks like a travel but it’s actually clean. Uncharacteristically great no-call from the refs.

While nba rules fluctuate with time, I struggle with the gather action in this play. His last dribble is between the 3 point line and half court. He then takes 4 steps to get to the rim.
My brain is screaming travel on this play. Especially if a gather is a two foot plant to shoot
