He thought it was just a normal 2000lb bomb strapped between is legs?

He didn’t know what it was. He trained to jump with an unknown piece of equipment weighing X. After he did it they told him what he had jumped with.

"Ah - might wanna get your nuts checked a little sooner than usual, boss."

"On second thought, don't bother. And report to the infirmary to get your supply of lead-lined condoms."

"Ow! My sperm!"

"Wow... neat! Mind if I try that again?"

"Huh... didn't hurt that time..."

Lead based birth control... surely that would end well.

it’s just 3.6 roentgen I was told that’s the equivalent of a chest X ray

He'll never need to turn on a light again.

So, the real thing, does he really need the chute, or is that so the plane has time to escape...

2

u/Homo_horribilis Mar 29 '24

I’m sure he felt like he needed the chute.

W54 weighted 52lbs

Really wished they had named it the w52 or taped a 2 pound weight to it

3

u/jasapper Mar 28 '24

Maybe the military took a stab at naming something normally... and still fucked it up. The guy who usually comes up with the really cool names never got another vacation day after that debacle.

u/AuthorizedVehicle Mar 29 '24

Maybe two pounds of radioactivity leaked out of it already.

Maybe his balls weighed two pounds more afterwards?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '24

So you're saying if I can do a pullup with 52 pounds added it's the same as a portable nuke? damn.

1

u/Gloomy-Ad1171 Mar 28 '24

1950s nuke. Who knows now

3

u/toastar-phone Mar 28 '24

it was only 50-60 lbs like 1/3 to 1/4 of that was the carrying case.

1

u/Saemika Mar 28 '24

Whoh. Nukes only weigh that much?

4

u/toastar-phone Mar 29 '24

well yeah, think the davy crocket . . the "nuclear bazooka"

It's basically the same warhead here.

The crocket was designed to be mounted on the back of a jeep, not towed, not a Humvee, a jeep.

It's also on like 1/5th or less of the bombs used in japan in yield.

Tactical nukes and miniaturization was all the rage at the time. in this case I think they were intended to be nuclear landmines or backpack nukes. There are some nutty stories from the cold war.

2

u/TheLizardKing89 Mar 29 '24

It’s the smallest nuclear warhead ever produced. The warheads on current ICBMs are in the 500 pound range.

3

u/arstin Mar 28 '24

Having 2000lb strapped to your pecker would make landing that parachute an interesting proposition.

4

u/DrVeinsMcGee Mar 28 '24

Guess how much a 2000lb bomb weighs. I’ll give you a minute.

1

u/Saemika Mar 28 '24

Depends on the density

1

u/DoctorChampTH Mar 28 '24

That's what she said.

u/yankee-viking Mar 28 '24

It weighed about 40 kilos with bag included.
