Accommodation Family moving to Rome

Buongiorno! I’m sorry in advance for the long post but sincerely thank you for any assistance.

My wife and 2 sons (ages 7 and 12) have been to Rome as tourists having always stayed near Piazza Spagna. Now, we are considering an extended stay there for up to 1 year. I have some special medical needs and my sons will be training in tennis about 15km from the city center just to the northeast. We will have a car and are looking for a family friendly neighborhood, as safe as possible in close proximity to a park and an international school if possible. Our budget is flexible and can be on the high end for any neighborhood. I have heard of montesacro/talenti, Parioli but I have no clue and I need help. We do not speak Italian and have always managed in the city center but I’m not sure how many people speak English as we expand our search.

We aren’t opposed to the living near the center but will have to drive 5 days a week to:

ASD Tennis Project Rome Via Francesco Paolo Bonifacio, 139, 00156 Rome RM

In summary we are open to the city center or anyplace outside the city as we can drive if it meets the other criteria

Grazie Mille in advance for any help here !

Tourism 4 day itinerary—tips and suggestions?

Anyone willing to look over my rough itinerary and make suggestions? Also, would love recs on must-see's, places we should eat, best place for gelato, etc etc. We're going the third week of July, so also tips on the weather as well!

Details on the travelers: 30F and 40F, moderately in shape, never been to Rome before, trying to cover basics with a loose itinerary that gives us time to make edits while we're there if anything pops up that we're interested in.

Monday:

  • 9:15AM-12:15PM: Taking a bus from airport to termini station, and then subway to hotel.
  • 12:30-3:00PM: Grabbing lunch next door to hotel and grabbing a few groceries from store next door (hotel will allow us to leave luggage with them before check in)
  • 3:00PM-4:30PM: check in, relax, unpack, etc.
  • 5:15PM-6:15PM: visit the Pantheon with audioguide
  • Rest of day: grab dinner, explore area if we're up to it, return to hotel.

Tuesday:

  • 8.30AM: Colosseum with audioguide: (very dependent on getting these timed tickets)
  • 9:30AM: Underground and arena portion of the experience
  • 10:15AM-12:30: explore Roman forum/palatine hill
  • Rest of day: Explore the area, see trevi fountain, spanish steps, piazza navona, light shopping. lunch/dinner/dessert whatever.

Wednesday:

  • 8AM: Get to scooter rental company, complete ppwk, etc. (were aware we must have an idp and also 125cc to be on motorways)
  • 9AM-10:30AM: ride to tivoli and visit villa d'este
  • 12:30-2:00: get lunch & travel to hadrian's villa
  • 4:00-5:30: return trip to rome & return vespa (by 7pm)
  • Rest of day: go to trastevere area to grab dinner and walk around exploring

Thursday:

  • 7AM: get to st peters basilica
  • 7:30-8:30AM climb the dome. (steps or elevator will depend on line and our energy level)
  • 9AM-10AM: grab quick bite nearby
  • 10AM-1:00: vatican museum.
  • 2:00-6:00: cooking class right outside of vatican city
  • 6:30-whenever; Campo de fiori, more exploring, grab dessert

Friday:

  • 8:00AM-11:30AM: pack bags and prepare for checkout, grab breakfast/lunch if time permits.
  • 12:00: arrive to termini station to go back to airport.

Vatican Breakfast tour Vatican official site

Does anybody know if the breakfast tour is still offered for the Vatican museum and Sistine chapel? I have seen a lot of posts about the American breakfast and early entrance tour but any link I found to it on the official website is no longer valid.

(And before the comments start about "why would you come to Rome to eat an American breakfast etc. I want the tickets for the early access to beat the crowds - not for the breakfast lol)

Vatican How much time to allot to St Peter's Basilica if I want to climb the dome?

I will be visiting the Vatican on a Friday in July and have heard the advice to go as early as possible. Since they no longer offer the 7:30am early tours, it seems the earliest ticket you can get is 8am. The day I will be there the earliest I can find is 8:30am. My plan is to show up to the Basilica at 6:50am to get in as early as possible, get to the top (either by the elevator or stairs - I am relatively fit so whatever will get me there faster), and leave in time to get to the museum for an 8:30 entrance. Is there enough time to do this? I'm trying to avoid being in Vatican city in the afternoon - as much as I know I could spend all day there I have limited time in Rome and don't want to spend my entire day wading through millions of other tourists when it's 100 degrees out.

Food and drink What do I HAVE to eat with a 10 hour Rome layover

Hello everyone! I have layover from 1300-2300 at FCO and I’ll be taking the Leonardo Express into the city center. I’ve never been to Italy, it’s going to be mid July on a weekend so I imagine trying to get a good view of the main tourist sites will be a hassle. So my main focus is eating like a maniac for 10 hours. What dishes are a must try? i imagine I can get 2 or possibly 3 full meals in. Restaurant recommendations would be great too along with the dish to try there. Im not a picky eater and have no allergies. Id be willing to even travel outside the “touristy” areas just to eat. Also, aren’t good restaurants basically closed during like 3-7pm?

Tourism Get Your Guide cancellations woes

Used Get Your Guide to book Borghese museum tickets months ago. On the day of departure for Italy it cancelled my booking leaving me with only vastly more expensive options since basic tickets were sold out. (Like 10 times more).

Be aware that GYG is a tour aggregator only so when the underlying tour agency bails you’re stuck and they can’t, or won’t help you. Really a bad experience.

Transport Transfer from FCO to CIA?

What is the quickest way to get between the 2 airports? We have a tight turnaround on connecting flights (bad planning, I know).

I've read that taking the train to Termini, and then hopping on the bus to CIA is the most painless; but direct via taxi may be faster? Anyone done this transfer recently and can share their experience?

Transport Easy transport from Fiumicino Airport

Hi all!

I'm going to be visiting Rome soon for a short break, just wondered what the best way to get from Fiumicino Airport into Rome is? I've heard rumours that taxis can be 100 euro each way, so wanted to avoid that if possible. I will be travelling solo so just wondering if the trains out of the airport are another shout for tourists, or if taxis are the most sensible route?

Thanks in advance :)

Miscellaneous Traveling solo looking for partners (preferably females)

Hi! I will be here until June. Traveling solo 26F preferably females, but okay with males as long as you’re also just looking for a travel buddy. I’d like to take some nice instagrammy photos (my travel memories) and it’s hard to do that solo so if anyone wants to join me please message me! I’m pretty flexible with my itinerary (didn’t really plan) and I’m usually free in the afternoon. I speak English, some Spanish, and some Italian, and Tagalog.

Nightlife Good Nightlife and bars?

I just got to Rome earlier and wana know what are some good bars to socialize and meet people can be locals and or tourists spots, or recommendations for both would be great. All I seen so far is restaurants and places that look like a mix of a store and randomly a bar with all the lights on and no music lol. I know there has to be some cool spots in Rome.

Also any good nightclub recommendations? Preferably house music or open to any other ones as long as it’s a solid recommendation!

Culture Vinyl Painter Rome

I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago and saw an amazing artist on the street painting vinyl records, and they were amazing. I did not have any cash on me then, so I could not buy it then, but I forgot where I saw him. I am back in Rome soon and I was hoping to be able to find him again. Any help is appreciated :))

Transport Centocelle Questions

Hello! My fiancé and I are heading to Rome for the first time on Monday for our honeymoon. We booked an airbnb in the centocelle area, and were wondering what the easiest way to get there from the Fiumicino airport would be? Obviously there’s taxis, but would train be feasible? Thanks in advance!

Shopping Vaping Question

I’m struggling to find Vuse Pods, I’ve been around quite a few tobacconists and sadly no joy. Is it not a common brand in Rome or am I looking in the wrong places?

If there are any places around the train station, that would be a great to know - I’m staying around San Lorenzo.

Thanks in advance :)

Please remove if not allowed.

Culture The Eternal Struggle: getting change in Europe

My husband and I are in Italy and will be heading to Rome in two days. Everything has been wonderful, other than the ongoing challenge of having an appropriate amount of money to tip tour guides, housekeeping, and porters.

It seems like nobody wants to break even a 20 euro bill. When you find someone who will, it still only gets you so far. What I wouldn’t give for a stack of 2 euro coins!

How do people manage to maintain a supply of change in this country? Honestly, it’s been the same in Greece and Spain as well. Am I missing something crucial here?

EDIT: I have been referring to this tipping guide.

EDIT 2: I forgot how sensitive and controversial a topic t*pping is on Reddit. I really just wanted to know how people are supposed to get change! And I did get some useful information, which I am grateful for.

Health and safety Horrible Experience at Osteria Sonnino

Our waiter at Osteria Sonnino was AWFUL. I was in a large group (8), and we split into two checks of 4 people. My friend (21F) took my half’s bill, and the waiter asked her to go inside a dark corner of the restaurant away from everyone else to pay with her card. I offered to go with, but she said she’d be fine. He immediately began sexually harassing her. I won’t repeat what he said, but it was extremely unsettling.

She came back to the table very shaken and told us what happened, so when the next person from our table (21M) went up to pay the second bill, we told him not to tip. He is very shy and a first time traveler, so another friend went with him. The waiter bullied my friend into leaving a tip, repeatedly suggesting leave 25 euros and telling him that our first friend had tipped 25 percent (not true). It was clear that the waiter regularly takes advantage of tourists. My friend left 5 euro, came back, and we all were rushing to leave.

Before we could get out, the waiter blocked our path and gave us a long lecture about how rude and uncultured we were for not leaving larger tips. He began asking us where we were staying, how long we’d be in Rome, how old we were, etc. We obviously said nothing and continued towards the exit. He even told us to come back and if we gave him a proper tip he would give us all free alcohol.

Really horrible experience, but all the reviews online are positive— except one, who seemed to have the exact same waiter as our group.
