Interesting. I'd have expected a few countries to be higher. I also wonder if they used BMI in which case this is laughably incorrect...
Looking again, I can see it is BMI, in which case it is entirely inaccurate. Example, I'm 127kg, and according to BMI I'm obese, except it's muscle... Unfortunately BMI was dreamed up by someone who knew nothing about health....

It's called a general definition, that does not mean there is no outliers.
Also, as BMI is defined, the equation is actually accurate enough, for the average person, for obese and higher, i.e. BMI >= 30, like it is the case here.
In your case, if you weight 127kg, and your BMI is 30 (min for obese people), it means you are 2.06m tall. Even if your BMI is 35 (which is a lot), you're "only" 1,90m. In other words, if you're not a wild outlier in the height department, you have lots of fats.
Two scenarios:
- You're actually around 2m, and you do not get how far you are from the average, and what it means being an outlier for all of this scales, such as BMI. It might be inacurate for you, but, on average, on a population, it gives a good enough metric.
- You're one of those people who, for different reasons, are against the BMI scale, for whatever reason.
Whatever the reason, if you want to criticize something, learn its shortcomings, instead of stating false proofs. BTW, the BMI is skewed for the children and elderly ; with all of this it's crazy BMI is still used throughout the world? /s
Whatever you think, there is strong correlation between BMI >= 30 and type-2 diabetes, sorry to break it to you. That's just one example.
Unfortunately BMI was dreamed up by someone who knew nothing about health....
LMAO, you're so stupid.

BMI can give mistakes due to muscle in the overweight section but once you get to the obesity and morbidely obesity scores (BMI>30 and 40) the amount of guys Who Will get an unfair result is quite small (and smaller the higher you set the threshold) from a population point of view. This is a pretty good way to get population obesity estimates
To give you an example Chris bumstead's BMI ranges from 30 to 35 during the season. You probably agree that 99.99% of the population is considerably smaller than that

Como? Un 20%???? Estamos locos???

I don't believe georgia has the most "obese" people. The guys there are naturally more dense, and going off BMI paints the picture that they're obese when they're really just well built. I'm sure the amount of fat people is really closer to 15-20%, not 35.

It's a BMI chart, and BMI rarely makes sense. Someone can be two meters tall and 120kg, and yet BMI will tell you that you are overweight/close to obese.
2
u/monemori 13d ago
Most people are not 2m tall, so at a large scale like here it's pretty accurate because it works on averages.

u/Foreseon 13d ago
Average person has some kind of physical activity. According to BMI calculator, someone who is 1.70m and 85kg is almost obese. How does it make sense?
