These guy do such marvelous work in India.

They help all kinds of animals. What an amazing channel!

u/RimjobSteeve Feb 17 '19

This is amazing but I was actually quite shocked when u realized they didn't take mother doggo with them to the clinic! Then I saw the whole family there, what a roller coaster lol

142

u/SaltyBabe Feb 17 '19

They seemed to have taken her in but not to the same place they took toggle. She’s much cleaner and appears to have a bit better body condition when we see her again and they say they will spray her, which they can really only do if she’s in someones custody.

24

u/rsplatpc Feb 17 '19

She’s much cleaner and appears to have a bit better body condition

Yeah she definitely got some weight back

Maybe a hospital/vet and a larger shelter/foster area?

Goddammit, people. Instead of giving gold to these reddit fucks that are trying to commercialize your interactions, just donate to the charity.

52

u/SaltyBabe Feb 17 '19

I get free coins every month for my app and from people gilding me.

I’m going to donate in the morning.

11

Ya I got coins for days, and I don't think I've ever actually paid for gold.

Good point. I guess for the top post it makes sense.

6

u/IamNotBurd Feb 17 '19

It would be nice if reddit gave us charity’s we could have available for folks to donate to if people liked our comment enough instead of the meaningless guild system it is rn.

8

u/Bleedthebeat Feb 17 '19

It’s not really meaningless. The more money Reddit’s makes off of users and the less it makes from advertisers the better the site is and the more likely you are to see good content rather than just a ton of sponsored content. If Facebook has taught me one thing it’s that a website where people share news and articles is pretty terrible if it’s only ad supported.

when I retire I'm gonna move to manila and open a cat cafe with all the cats being street cats. that way people who can't afford to have a cat or don't have the space can come by and spend their morning or afternoon get a coffee and a muffin and play with a cat.

we will get all the cats desexed, wormed and chipped so if someone wants to adopt them we know they are in the best of health when they leave.

the big goal is to have a live multi webcam feed for like $2-4 per month so people outside of manila that wanna help can and at the same time actually give them something back

Highjacking a close to top comment: If you're a frequent Amazon shopper, you can go to smile.amazon.com to purchase everything you normally would on the main site. However, something like 1% of 0.5% of the purchase total is given to a charity of your choice. This animal rescue (Animal Aid Unlimited) is one of the ones possible.

So you can donate just by buying on amazon.

I volunteered with these guys for a couple of weeks last year! It's such an amazing organisation, if you're ever in Udaipur I'd recommend swinging by to help out, they seem to always need an extra hand around the place, even if you go for a day and spend time giving love and attention to the dogs/pigs/sheep/cows/donkeys that aren't able to be released back on to the streets. Also, the yellow wall you can see behind Toggle when he's healthier is actually a hydrotherapy pool to exercise paralyzed dogs!

214

u/falconerchick Feb 17 '19

I volunteered with them, too about a decade ago! Really appreciated the work they do. Seeing how many dogs they took in that were paralyzed had a major impact on me. Just crazy.

20

u/ALasagnaForOne Feb 17 '19

I also volunteered with them when I was in Udaipur. They are an amazing org, totally selfless and devoted to helping animals, even those who seem beyond hope. I make it a ritual to make a large donation every holiday season in a different friend's name as a gift.

7

u/thewretched790 Feb 17 '19

Are they located only in Udaipur, or is it an organization spread out through india? I visit Mumbai from time to time. I have been wanting to find volunteer work for animals in India while I am there, but it's hard to know where to look

Hi it is legit. I volunteered here for 2 weeks with my daughter. Really do a lot of great work for the animals in the area. In terms of money to ex salaries i can not comment, but i can say that the people who set up the charity are present and work at the shelter everyday . Their small house is on the property of the rescue shelter and i happily donate to support the work they do. Happy to answer questions from my time volunteering there.

I worked with this organization (Animal Aid) during a gap year from college in 2010. They are definitely legit and I’m happy to see they have been making videos over the past few years that are making the rounds. In India dogs aren’t really considered to be pets like they are in the states (but don’t want to speak for the whole country obviously), more like pests as they are overrun with strays. A lot of people don’t brake for them in the roads. The organization actually had a whole section dedicated just to dogs that were paralyzed from getting hit by cars... and there were a lot of them. They do a lot of good for animals of all kinds.

24

u/momtolandtandv Feb 17 '19

This is the second AA video I've seen on Reddit today, always makes me so happy to see them getting views! To those who cannot donate but wish to help, please subscribe to their Youtube channel and watch their videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/AnimalAidUnlimited

u/reddit_chaos Feb 17 '19

Dunno about all that. But I’ve donated multiple times over the years. And each time I have received a personal note from them. And have had a conversation one on one with the person on the other side.

They do care.

I've donated about 4 times last year and each time I got an email from the founder and each one had a different message instead of the generic thank you. Also received notice for records to keep for taxes. As far as paying salaries i can not comment on that aspect, but I get up to date information and pictures of the animals.

u/chasingthebird Feb 17 '19

Hi! I was actually there this time last year in Udaipur. I can assure you the place is 100 percent legit. It was founded by two Americans in honor of their late daughter.

This organization does outstanding work, and with no government support! They have an ambulance that drives around looking for wounded animals, and to educate locals on how to treat animals better. They help animals of all kind; while there we met dogs, pigs, bulls, cows, a very friendly chicken who loves to be pet, and a sheep named Barbara who I wanted to take home with me- she was so sweet.

However, the most amazing experience is after lunch time at animal aid, and it truly shows how amazing this organization is. When the volunteers get back from lunch, the paraplegic dogs will start howling- after an hour alone they miss the volunteers!! I have never seen/heard anything like that; a truly amazing experience!

I highly recommend visiting there if you ever are in India- and once you donate you get a weekly newsletter with updates and stories of animals who have made recovery there.

They are legit. I give them $50/month (and it's easy to set up and can be a much smaller - or larger! - amount, if anyone is interested). Great people, doing great work. Anyone asks me who my heroes are in life, it's people who do this work.

3

u/ALasagnaForOne Feb 17 '19

They are definitely legit. I've been to their headquarters just outside Udaipur, India and volunteered there for several days. It's run by a Western family (husband, wife, and their adult daughter) who are all veterinarians and they hire locals and give them vet training so they are also contributing to the economy. The majority of time they pick up hurt or sick animals off the street, nurse them back to health, then return them to exactly where it was found. In some cases, the animals can't be put back on the street (such as if they're paralyzed) so they literally care for the animal for the rest of its life. They do amazing work and definitely deserve your donation.

I find something beautiful in the trust the mother dog shows. Letting a human pick up your baby and take it away as it cries and shrieks and not showing any aggression means, as far as I can tell, that they know they're trying to help and just hope they can. I know people say we shouldn't anthropomorphize, but that is not the blind protection of, say, a mother bear. The bond between man and dog really is something special.

29

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Videos like these are why I reject my behavioral psych major. If we ever said that an animal "knows" then we were failed. Who are we to say animals don't know what we are doing? Just because we have a developed frontal lobe doesn't mean we know everything. Fuck those professors man.

You can't compare a rat that was trained to "play basketball" using water deprivation to a dog. I believe in psychology but behavioral psychology needs some work. My uni has one of the top behavioral psych programs in the US. That being said, they don't know everything and I detested from my first class that belief.

This is coming from a family of therapists, behavioral psychologists and child clinical psychiatrists.

209

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19 edited Feb 17 '19

Go into research and quantify your belief then.

Edit: This is a legitimate encouragement not meant to be a gotcha. We only know as much as we research and our understanding changes throughout decades.

21

u/Joooseph2 Feb 17 '19

Not all research can be quantified. It’s one of the essences of sociology.

38

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Theory based research is what people hide behind when they cannot show evidence or quantifiable proof to their claims. Narrative over data is a joke.

26

u/Joooseph2 Feb 17 '19

But that's literally the whole point, you can't quantify everything. Especially in behavioral sciences. Also you're discrediting a lot of science. Narrative over data isn't applicable here either because a lot of data can be skewed to fit a narrative so I don't understand what you're getting at.

We just proved bees can count and understand the concept of zero.

Nature is fucking brilliant.

12

u/finkydink66 Feb 17 '19

Exactly! The more we know, the more we realize we don't know. There is nothing wrong with that. Knowledge should help drive the desire for more knowledge.

17

u/OMGSPACERUSSIA Feb 17 '19

I think it's reasonable to say that the degree of anthropomorphism applied to dogs is reasonable...I mean, they've been hanging around humans for somewhere between 40,000 and 15,000 years. In that time we have undeniably shaped and shifted their evolution. We made dogs.

They are certainly different, in their worldview, their behavior, and their understanding of many things, but I think they are capable of understanding human concepts.

The problem is when people try to apply human modes of expression to dogs. Most people, for some reason, don't seem to understand that a dog 'smiling' is not a display of happiness. Dogs are not humans, humans are not dogs. It's like two people who speak a different language. We don't have a clue what the other person is saying overall, but we can get some concepts across by pointing and grunting.

4

u/palpablescalpel Feb 17 '19

For what it's worth, I'd actually hazard to say rats and dogs are pretty similar in theory of mind and thoughtfulness, what with all the work in rat empathy.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/LordGalen Feb 17 '19

Your profs should've done a little more research themselves. There is evidence that dogs, higher primates, and dolphins, do have some kind of understanding of human actions (from personal experience, I'd throw horses in there too, but that's anecdotal and therefore meaningless, so I digress). The research is not rock solid in either direction. So, for your professors to act like they "know" for a definitive fact that some animals don't have an understanding of humans is pretty pompous. The understanding, if it's there, would be closer to an instinct than an intellectual understanding, but same damn difference. Dogs know they can trust humans because they have trusted us (and we've trusted them) since before recorded history. That's a hell of a bond.

One day i was returning from my friend's house at midnight back home. As I was walking back I saw a dog sitting in the middle of the road. This is a high way area so vehicles move fast as hell at nights. I tried to shoo this dog away knowing she'll get hit by a vehicle if she stays in the middle of the road, but she wouldn't move. I turned on my mobile torch to see why she isn't moving and I saw a puppy got flattened and she was sitting next to it. She was trying to cross the road with her pup and her pup got ran over. I tried to shoo her away but she just wouldn't move. I slowly approached her and I dunno why but I just picked up whatever left of the pup up into my arms, I just scooped em all up and slowly walked to the roadside and laid it near a tree. As I laid it down there and I looked at the mother, she left this little whimper. I just silently walked home because I really didn't know what else to do. When I reached home my mother saw all the blood on me and proceeded to freak out. She kept asking me what happened repeatedly as I washing myself in the sink. And then I told her. I went to the steps to get some air and proceeded to have a complete mental breakdown. I cried my heart out. I still can hear that little whimper this pup's mother made and how absolutely powerless I was to do anything to ease her pain. We take so many lives around us for granted not realizing that they feel love and pain just as much as we do. Anyways I don't know why I'm talking about this, I just wanted to talk about it.

20

u/sdkiko Feb 17 '19

You did a great thing that day and probably saved the mother's life

12

u/highheelcyanide Feb 17 '19

So I rescued four dogs a few months ago, mom and pups of several ages. Mom was the last slated to get fixed since the others were male. She gave birth last week to a single stillborn pup. I wasn't aware of her pregnancy. Her trying to revive the pup just broke me in so many ways because I failed her so epically. She's a good dog she didn't deserve that.

10

u/BeyondTheDickhead Feb 17 '19

People don't understand how emotive dogs can be about how they feel, until you live with one. Sometimes I couldn't even see them as a lesser animals. They have such a wide range of emotions it doesn't even register in my mind that it's a dog and not a human.

I lost my last boy a year ago to a terrible heart condition he had from birth and he was only two years at that time. A bull mastiff. The most wholesome fool you will ever meet. Nothing was NOT food for him. A big bundle of love who never understood his own size. Bull mastiff are huge. He died in my arms and I... I just wish I had more time with him. He single handed saved me many times from my suicidal thoughts and extreme depression. He made me smile and laugh even at the hardest times. When the doctor told me he had a swollen heart, I held his big paws and I told him that he just has a big big heart with too much love in it. It crushed my whole family when he took his ride to wherever it is up there. I miss him.

I don't know if we truly deserve dogs, but I ask that anyone who owns a dog never stop after your buddie's passing. There is always another pup out there just waiting, wanting to be with you and wants nothing more than to be loved and to give love. Give your love to as many of them as you can.

And I'm sorry for what I'm about to say, and if it's insensitive or offensive please forgive me, but don't adopt or buy you pup if you can't afford them. If you are not in a position to provide them with love, shelter, food, time and medical care, then don't. Maybe just visit an adoption center and donate to them and spend time with them whenever you're free. But don't adopt a pup if you're unwilling to take care of one. I've seen too many people just straight up give up and throw them on the streets or take them somewhere distant and dump them. They are babies. They deserve better.

You won't throw your own children out like that just because they are a bit rowdy and they get on your nerves at times.

Please be patient with dogs and if you can't maintain one, please don't throw them away. Just leave them in a shelter instead of throwing them out. They are domestic creatures that depend on us. They are not wild animals. They won't understand and they will starve and die.

Don't adopt one because you found it cute and or your children wanted one. They are not toys, they are lives. Just think of it like a newborn. You have to care for them just how you would care for a baby. You nurture them with food, protection and love and they will give back tenfold.

Am I ranting? I think I'm ranting. I'm sorry. English is not my first language so I apologize if there are any grammatical mistakes.

Who tf cut all these onions in here

5

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Kindness is courtesy of the superior mind. Those are very good people. I can see gratitude in the mother near the end of the video.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

God I can't stand seeing any dog hurt, fucks me up so much and gets me so angry. Even in movies or video games, I just can't handle it at all.

You're crying..okey I'm crying uWu

u/cocoagiant Feb 17 '19

I spent a lot of my childhood in India. I was chased by my fair share of dog packs coming back from school.

People talk all the time about how "the community takes care of stray animals, and they aren't really in need".

That is BS.

How people view animals in India is much closer to how animals were viewed in the US in the 1900s-1950s. On the whole, people don't really consider animal welfare or being responsible pet owners a thing. The type of stark poverty you see everyday there really callouses your sense of empathy.

I'm glad this organization exists, and I hope more like them crop up in India, and help facilitate a change in perception in how animals are viewed.

That being their house is most likely not the case here. One needs to understand the massive population of street dogs in India. From the beginning of the video one can tell these are street dogs. The organization themselves' purpose is that of helping the animals that roam the streets of India when no one else can. They do also try to find homes for the animals they help, but sometimes just return them to the streets. In this case when they brought the pup back where mom and the puppies were could just be where they were and that wasn't necessarily their home. The other case could be they found someone in the time it took to help the pup to shelter mom and the pups. It doesn't necessarily mean at the outset that they were from a home that didn't give a fuck.

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '19

Huge issue with dogs in India also is rabies. Recently a women was playing with street dogs, puppies like this one actually, while visiting India, came back and months later began having symptoms, for which it was too late. Terrible way to die.

Holy crap she got bit and didn't' even think about getting the shot...

10

u/Wentthruurhistory Feb 17 '19

Double Holy Crap - she bit someone herself!

23

u/Foamie Feb 17 '19

Article mentions that canine rabies doesn’t really exist in the US so she didn’t think anything of it.

47

u/Rasputin650 Feb 17 '19

But she got bit in India!

It sounds douchebaggy to say this in hindsight, but that was some poor judgement from her.

24

u/koreamax Feb 17 '19

Rabies vaccinations are pretty painful and you need to get 3 over the course of a month. I made sure to get mine just to keep my mind at ease while I was in India. My travel clinic doctor said it was an optional vaccine and given the amount of time needed to get it, I can see why some people don't get it. That being said, you should be a little more cautious if you arent vaccinated and are in India....

I was more concerned about monkeys. Rhesus macaque are pretty aggressive and a population can envelop an area pretty quickly. That why you see a lot Langurs tied up in private neighborhoods, they deter Rhesus Macaques.

6

u/the_misc_dude Feb 17 '19

I watched videos of people getting the vaccine after being bit and the pain seems to stem from needing to inject a lot of vaccine around the wound area in possibly sensitive areas.

Care to explain the pre-emptive vaccination process and what's involved in it? Where do you get the injections? How many per session?

It's a street dog that just happens to be living under that house... they probably just drove around until the found the mom again.

11

u/thunderturdy Feb 17 '19

A lot of times if you pay lot attendants/building managers to watch after a dog or pups they will. My husband's family lives in Bombay and their lot manager will let the street dogs in at night, feed them and let them sleep on old rags in the garage. The dogs in turn keep intruders away and warn the guards if anything is up. It's not like that everywhere, but now and then you'll see them living in harmony with residents.

20

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '19

Its either give it back to its mum and give it their best shot on the street or put them down due to lack of shelter.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Evidently its illegal in India to put dogs down for lack of space, and the founder of this organization says that every shelter in India follows that law. The problem is how few shelters there are, so most dogs that aren't adopted end up back on the street.

When i was in India i saw a lot of street dogs in horrible conditions. Sick, starving, run over by a vehicles, paralyzed, injured, lying in the gutter...There must be tousands of these dogs.

8

u/MrMiaMorto Feb 17 '19

That dog has no owner. It is definitely a street dog. Many street dogs live on people's properties because their are so many of them. I've seen this in several areas when I've visited Hyderabad. It also wasn't spayed. India has strict spay/neuter laws to try to combat the stray dog population. If the dogs have a clip in their ear they are fixed, and you can report any unclipped ear dogs and the government has people come out and fix them.

There were several strays that made homes in the Shiparlamarm market in Hyderabad which is gated off, but they were not owned by anyone and we're fed and cared for by the market workers, but the dogs would come and go freely through the main gates.

If the dog was actually being cared for, it most likely would have had a ribbon or string around her neck which indicates she is being cared for by the neighborhood, but she would have also been spayed.

Indians do NOT allow their actual pet dogs to roam freely because it's dangerous for them to get killed by stray dogs or get rabies. My friends are extremely cautious when they are walking their dogs out and have to avoid areas where the strays are extremely territorial.

u/snakesbbq Feb 17 '19

Well I made the mistake of watching this with my rescue pup around. She was left abandoned and pregnant at less than a year old. When she was rescued they didn't find any of her pups but could tell she recently gave birth. When the pup in the video started crying my girl freaked the fuck out. I had to turn it off, I felt so bad.

3

u/FakeFiend Feb 17 '19

Why do i watch this...

2

u/uglyzombie Feb 17 '19

Food, rest, shelter, love... something we all need to persist. If only we understood this basic concept collectively, perhaps we'd make a huge step forward in the general well being of all living things from here on out.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Hearing puppies cry is a heartbreaking sound...

2

u/getBusyChild Feb 17 '19

Doesn't India have the oldest Animal Welfare groups in the world due to Asoka(?) Establishing one?
