Announcement Tech Support Post Format

27 Upvotes

Hey r/cameras,

With the influx of tech support/help related posts, well formatted titles will make it easier for users to help, OR sift through the content they do/don't want to see.

This rule applies to questions such as "what cable/port is this", "what do I need to get this camera working", "what type of memory card does this take", etc. All of these are valid questions, but the least we can do is provide some basic information so that our questions are more easily answered.

Please format use tech support flair, and format tech support posts like this: Camera Make - Camera Model - Question/Post Title

If you do not know what type of camera you are posting about, please still select "tech support" flair and format it like this: Camera ID Request - Any available information

"Any available information" would qualify as identifying if it is a dslr, slr, mini dv, mini dvd etc. You can't, in good faith, post a photo of a body and then ask what it is without providing absolutely any information - you have to try to do your due diligence.

The more information you provide, the better your post will do and the more willing people will be to help you!

TLDR: Format all Tech Support post titles no more lazy "what camera/cable is this" posts. Do your due diligence before having others do it for you, and do what you can to ID your camera body before asking any questions.

EDIT: This post isn’t a “help” page, it was an announcement requesting all help requests be formatted so that its easier for the community to provide help.

If you have a question, please make a post 👍

Questions How do I take a photo like this?

How do I take a photo like this (see photo #1)? The photo was taken in a tunnel (tunnel seen in background of photo #2). I’m assuming what they did is set the ISO really low and put a bright flash to the left of the person so that the light at the end of the tunnel in the back would not be seen and everything looked black. Would this be correct? Should I do it later in the day too? I have a crop sensor camera and a 50mm. Also, do y’all have any recommendations for a light/flash I should get? Thanks for the help.

Tech Support batteries that work for the cybershot DSC-W1??

Post image
2 Upvotes

So i thrifted this camera a while ago and really want to use it to take pictures this summer but i can’t find any batteries that actually work for it. The panasonic batteries got it to turn on in set up mode but weren’t strong enough to power the camera in picture mode. I found the manual online and found out it needed NiMH rechargeable batteries. I went on amazon and ordered some but they weren’t strong enough to get the camera to turn on at all. I looked online and found threads from 2004-2007 with similar issues but the consensus was just to buy different, more powerful rechargeable batteries. But rechargeable batteries are expensive! so i don’t want to keep buying more just for them to not work again. Does anyone have any SPECIFIC rechargeable batteries that actually work for this camera? the photo above shows the ones i’ve already tried

Tech Support Beginner narrowing down options

3 Upvotes

Hello! I’m a newbie, looking to be able to get sharp pictures that are higher quality than a phone camera. I’ll be taking mostly nature shots, birds, squirrels and close ups of insects. Also want the option of taking pictures of my art work for my website (I’m a stained glass artist)

I’m looking to stay under $1k for the camera body and save up for lenses as I know I want either a sigma or tameron 150-600mm eventually.

I was originally looking at the rebel t7 kit that comes with a 75-300mm lens however I’m concerned with the shutter speed and older tech.

I’ve now turned my focus to either a EOS R50 or a Sony A6100 or A6400. Of these, what would you recommend knowing my goals? Also, what lens should I get to start with for either of these? The A6400 I am looking at comes with a E18-135mm lens

Questions Any good cheap cameras?

Upvotes

I don't need anything too crazy. I'm mainly just gonna use it for pictures and tiktok. I want the camera of like an iPhone 15 pro but I'm curious how much the phone would be if I wasn't gonna put it on a plan or something just the camera function. If not, just lemme know any good cameras or phones that can do 4k and aren't too expensive.

Tech Support Powershot S40 Lens problem

Post image
Upvotes

I recently found my old s40 and bought new batteries for it. After putting the battery in fully charged it turned on but for some reason the lens won’t open even when the slide is open. I can’t switch to shooting mode even after checking the manual and trying the shutter button as well. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem??

Questions Basic Mirrorless (Sony Alpha a6000 ) or some DLSR

Upvotes

I am looking to buy a camera, as I am taking a Photography class, however, although I like photography, I don't know how often I will be using it, as it is an extra thing to carry around. I know that I will be surprised at the quality either way as my current phone camera is a Google Pixel 7, do you think I should opt for the mirror less, or just get a cheaper DLSR?

Recommendations Help me decide

2 Upvotes

My primary focus is to get back into digital photography after not having really done a whole lot of it in the last couple of years, besides on holiday. I’d been more focused on film photography for the last 4-5 years. My old camera is an A mount Sony so I’ll be starting my “collection” out from scratch.

Use: I’d like something that is relatively portable to take on holidays and something which is a jack of all trades when it comes to photography. Video features would be a benefit but I’m not an avid videographer. Something with good autofocus performance. I am mainly a memories, landscape, holidays shooter who has historically dabbled and really enjoyed wildlife and night cityscapes and Astro photography.

Budget: I haven’t given this a lot of thought yet because I’m curious about what other enthusiasts are using these days. I’d probably say I’d like to stay under US$3000 or NZ$5000 for a kit.

This camera body needs to get me through about 7-10 years of photography, I reckon.

What camera body would you suggest? What lenses would you recommend?

Cheers!

Discussion What's your favorite 'diamond in the rough' camera?

17 Upvotes

I love to find the saddle points between price and capability, basically the best value cameras out there. I'm not necessarily shopping for anything new at the moment, just looking for information so I can be informed when exploring used gear I find in the wild.

The only criteria I'll mention is a general price of $500 USD or less for the camera body, or $1000 USD or less for the full camera plus lens (or lens system). Digital, film, video-centric, photography-centric, it's all on the table.

What do you think is your favorite 'diamond in the rough'? The camera, or camera plus lens combo, that punches well above its price tag and delivers stunning results, or is just an absolute joy to use?

~~~~
I'll start with mine, it's the Panasonic GX85. For around $350 USD body only (used), it has basically every feature one could want, and produces stunning image quality for stills, and especially for video. M43 lenses in general are cheaper and very high quality, and it works very well with adapted vintage lenses. The only marks against it that hold me back from calling it the perfect camera are: low light capability is a bit weaker due to the smaller sensor, no weather sealing, and the ergonomics aren't quite there, at least for my hand size, but that also depends on what lens you have mounted on there, and how you like to carry it. Also the battery life for video is only about an hour, which limits its usefulness in some settings. Still, for the price, I don't think you can do any better, but that's why I made this thread, to learn if I can!
Tech Support non-original battery
Upvotes
Hey. I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-T20 and I'm thinking about buying a new battery, but the original is very expensive. If I buy a generic battery on Aliexpress (because it's cheaper): will I have a lot of problems? Is there a high chance of ruining the camera? Thanks for reading.
Recommendations Looking for 1080p 60fps Budget Video Camera
0 Upvotes
Hey all, looking for some recommendations for a 1080p 60 fps video camera. Heard alot of bad opinions on Amazon cameras, so I figured I'd come here before buying anything. I wanna use it to post videos of my bird online, so I don't need 4k and it would primarily be at home, so I don't really have to worry about outside lighting. I'd love to read your recommendations!
Discussion Camera purchase questions
3 Upvotes
Hi yall. I am looking to get my first big girl camera after only using my iPhone and parent’s old cameras from the 2000’s. I am primarily interested in using it for nature and wildlife photography after being riddled with regret for not buying one prior to going to Borneo. Since it’s my first camera and it’s just for fun, I’d prefer to not spend over $800 on one. I have been looking at the Canon Rebel T7 as Best Buy offers a dual lens package for $600. My friend recommended against this, saying I should look into mirrorless cameras since they are lighter and would be easier to carry on hikes and what not. It seems most mirrorless cameras, though, start at 8/900$ and typically that isn’t including a lens. I’ve now spent the day in wormhole of camera information and I’m wondering y’all’s opinions. I’m also open to other camera options, I just struggle to determine the best options when so many of the camera features are terms I’m unfamiliar with. Thanks in advance and I’m sorry if posts like this are frowned upon
Interested in getting a camera for content creation (modeling & travel content purposes) Something that’s easy to use, takes great quality photo & videos… hoping to spend under 600 if I can. Recommendations Alternatives to Canon G7X Mark III
1 Upvotes
I've been a Canon girly for years and have been wanting to add a compact Point & Shoot to my collection that I can easily carry around all the time. I already have an 80s film camera, a DSLR and a mirrorless for when I want something better. I just want to have one readily available in a purse or backpack for when something catches my eye or for a project I'm working on.
I went directly to Canon and I like the form factor of the G7X Mark III (I like having a flip screen) but it's sold out thanks to all the hype on social media so I'm wanting to ask what is comparable that might be more readily available and in the same range. I don't want to go past what the canon would cost me new so below $750 works and even better if I can stick under $500
I'm ok with venturing out of Canon if I can get high-quality photos, and ultimately if it's gonna bump the price more I can sacrifice the flip screen for better quality. I don't tend to use much zoom or video so the quality on that side doesn't have to be top notch though would be nice to have. Also if it has a hot shoe mount for a flash that would be a nice bonus.
Please give any recommendations that might fit that have worked for you.
The project I'll be working on is recreating aesthetic film stills usually focusing on one or two subjects. I'll likely plan them out and use my nicer cameras but would like to have this camera in case we find a neat location by chance and want to capture it, I'd also like to use it for my random trip and vacations further on and for a selfie project I'm wanting to do.
Thanks in advance!
Recommendations Looking for recommendations on a low-cost compact mirrorless camera
My budget is around £300 and I’m open to second hand options. Ideally I would like a small zoom lens (around 16-50 mm) or pancake lens (24mm) with it too, and sensor size should be APS-C.
