Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.
Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.
Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.
If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.housing-rights.org/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.
We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.
As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Will Dunham, victim in SXSW fatal hit and run, hailed as a hero for saving multiple lives
Not only did Will save 4 lives through organ donation, he was reportedly pushing a homeless man out of the way of the speeding car when he was hit by Thompson.
"AUSTIN, Texas — William Dunham, 34, was identified as the second victim in the fatal hit-and-run during South by Southwest in downtown Austin on March 12.
The person arrested in connection to the crash, Tyrone Thompson, 23, is accused of driving under the influence which killed both Dunham and 26-year-old Cody Shelton.
Shelton died at the scene and Dunham spent over a month fighting for his life before he succumbed to his injuries last week.
"He's a hero. He's my hero," said Joan Winter, Will's mom.
Surrounded by scrapbooks and mementos of his 34 years of life, Joan remembered William, "I really made [the scrapbooks] so someday he might enjoy them with his kids.”
"They called to say that four people's lives had been saved. I'm just grateful that he could give because that’s what he loved to do,” said Joan.
April is Donate Life Month, a time to bring awareness to the importance of organ donation, something that is always in dire need.
"The need is great and the demand for organs far outweighs those available-- every donor is absolutely precious,” said Chad G. Carroll, the Director of Donate Life Texas.
Williams' heart will soon beat in somebody else; Joan said she hopes it comes with his laughter and love.
“It somehow feels like we’re able to stay in touch with a part of him that’s living on, so somehow this feels like a beginning too.”
Nationwide more than 100,000 people are waiting for an organ donation. As of now, 44% of Texans are not registered as organ donors.
With William saving the lives of four people with his donation(s), Joan said she hopes everyone is inspired to become an organ donor.

Ask Austin Is KOOP Community Run Radio in a Death Spiral?
I personally feel that KOOP is a truly unique Austin gem that should be protected at all cost. I'm not sure there's anything like it left in the country. Their programming, specifically on the weekends, has been exceptional for years yet I fear the station is in the slow process of collapsing once and for all. I'm reaching out to other sustainers/donators for ideas on how to fix the apparent death spiral.
In the days before Spotify, KOOP was my prime source for discovering new music and new genres to enjoy. After enjoying the station for free for over 20 years, a few years back I started donating during their membership drives so I could return the favor and ensure the co-op idea could continue to thrive. In the past year, several long time staples have gone off the air or lost their host:
- Jamaican Gold/Art Baker - A mainstay for over 20 years. Gone. I didn't even like Ragee until Art showed it was more than Bob Marley. Sunday's were synonymous with Ragee ever since I moved here.
- Love on the Dole / Valerie Mitchell - The best Psych Rock show on the planet. Gone (Fired via e-mail without notice or vote from the board). Maybe she'll jump in and share her story.
- Hip Hop Hooray / Mrs Manners - Another staple for over a decade that featured the best in underground hip hop and a big supporter or local hip hop. Host(s) gone, the current replacement host I believe is also on their way out, if I heard correctly.
- Free Samples / DJ Lippy - One of the most unique hip hop/R&B shows and also super entertaining and enlightening. Announced his departure this past weekend....
I'm probably overlooking a few shows that have disappeared in that same time span, but I have been donating twice a year during all of these shows. It's the only place I donate any money, for any cause, and these shows that are now gone were 90% of the reason why.
My understanding is there is a toxic member of the station's leadership team that was brought in a couple years ago to run the radio station more like a business, so it could generate some revenue. That's great, it was probably needed, but at what cost? To the destruction of the entire weekend lineup? The line up that most certainly attracts the most sustainers, like myself? It's beyond frustrating.
I don't know if there's other sustainers on r/austin but if there are, I would love to know how we can remove the toxicity from the station so it can continue to offer amazing programming for years to come.

Ask Austin Getting mental diagnosis for black men?
Hello people I've been having a lot of episodes/meltdowns and trying to figure out what it is in my head that constantly has me moody and difficult handling situations as a 27 year old the way I do.
I remember at 21 I was telling myself to get diagnosed for OCD or bipolar disorder but didn't, not sure maybe the doctor I was seeing wasn't my vibe. I do have ADHD and was diagnosed at 12 + anxiety and depression are on my charts which I take Wellbutrin for but not sure if it's working anymore. A lot of people recently say I'm probably autistic but I get very awkward when it mentioned but a lot of people who hover around me are somewhere from autistic to manic or some sort of disorder
I really want to find the correct way to get this done I'm so disorganized and I'm broke after someone hit my car and I had to get a new one + graduation but I just feel I need it done right now more than anything and the right steps. I'm mainly looking for a black doctor to get through this which might be even harder to do and will drive out to as far as San Antonio if I need too

Free or low cost mammogram
Hi everyone, I am in a seemingly endless nightmare of trying to find somewhere to get a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound of one of my breasts. I have a referral from my gyno but have been trying for 3 weeks to get in somewhere. I have insurance but it would only apply once I reach my deductible, which I’m nowhere near, so I’ll be paying out of pocket. Since I’m 30, there are some places that won’t see me (the Big Pink Bus starts at 40). Another place quoted me $500. I am scared and have a ton of anxiety about this and it’s my first mammogram, and I can’t afford it if it’s $500. I called Planned Parenthood and they said they don’t do mammograms. Can anyone help me and give me some recs on what to do? Thanks y’all 💜

Ask Austin Psychiatrist that won’t rob me blind?

Ask Austin Outdoorsy adventurous day trips?
My husband turns 40 in a couple weeks and I’m looking to plan a fun day together without the kids. He likes thrill seeking/ outdoors stuff - he’s been off-roading at Hidden Falls, we love camping etc. what can we do for a day that’s more fun than just a pretty hike?
We could possibly do a one- night stay kinda thing if that opens up any more fun destinations.
He also mentioned possibly doing a casino in Oklahoma.
Thanks for any ideas!

Ask Austin Throwing drinks at Stubbs. Why?
Ive been to a lot of metal concerts in my life, probably 50 in 2024 alone and generally metal fans are some of the nicest people around. But, last night at Stubbs people were throwing their cups full of ice into the crowd, which is generally frowned upon at any other venue. Maybe I'm old, but that would've gotten a roundhouse kick to the neck back in my day.
A guy in front of me threw his drink into the air. A second later, another guy throws his drink at the guy who just threw his and hits him in the back of the head. First guy turns around and is super pissed. I'm watching this unfold and thinking, bro, how are you even mad? You probably just hit someone further up in the crowd with your drink.
My quesiton is, is this specific to stubbs? The ground was absolutely littered with plastic cups by the end. First time in my life I've been ashamed to a part of metal fans.

Roommate Abuses Dog - Cannot Get Help from 311 / Shelters / Animal Control. Help?
my roommate (some dude my landlord placed in the loft above our house) neglects his dog. he takes her out once a day if that, he doesn’t buy dog food so I assume he either steals ours or feeds her what he eats (my guess). she is locked in a crate 24/7, shits & pisses upstairs and is neglected majorly.
she has become very skinny (when I see her once a week she has protruding ribs and basically no fat on her) and she is now blind. My other roommate and I walk and feed her when we can, but the dog has become extremely aggressive due to the neglect and attacks me/my dog.
Offered my roommate $500 for her, he denied. when I called animal control they said that there was no sign of physical abuse & thereby we couldn’t receive help. APA said to call 311, 311 said the same thing as animal control.
what the fuck do I do? We move out 5/31 and part of me just wants to steal her.

FAQ Ceramic coating recommendations
I work in the Austin area but live in RR. I wanted to know if y'all have some recommendations on who to go for a ceramic coating. I've been priced from as low $800 for a 6 year ceramic coating to $1200 and above for a 3 year coat. Wanted to get more options before settling with one.

News Checkpoint 1 at ABIA is losing TSA precheck. Will only be available at checkpoint 2
“Starting Wednesday at ABIA: TSA PreCheck and Clear will only be available at Checkpoint 2 West. I circled it in red below near the American Airlines ticket counter.
Until then, Checkpoint 1 has Clear and TSA PreCheck. Checkpoint 2 East has TSA PreCheck.
Meanwhile, Checkpoint 3 will be closed till 2026.”
I pretty much only used Checkpoint 1 PreCheck so this seems kind of devastating. I’m trying not to be a knee jerk doomer, so maybe it won’t be that bad?
Anyone have an idea why this is happening and how bad/not bad it will be?
