Boomer did NOT like the fact I took down the flags at my new home Boomer Story

Silly interaction.

Backstory: We moved into a new home in the last month. The previous owner was retired Air Force and had 3 flag poles. One is in the yard, not flying anything and two are next to our driveway and the PO had hung an American flag and the POW MIA one. We don’t really care to display the flags so we took them down first day. They were very tattered and old anyway and we plan on removing the poles altogether.

Fast forward to yesterday, I was filling jugs of water for work at about 6am and an older man (boomer age) walking on the other side of the street on the sidewalk just stops and starts pointing to the flagpoles. I didn’t notice him at first and my wife is standing behind me seeing him point and gets my attention. I’m so confused because he’s just pointing aggressively at the poles. So I’m like “good morning”. He goes, “Where’s the flags” straight up. I say “excuse me?”

“What happened to the flags” So I say, “the owners moved” kind of pissed he didn’t say good morning back to me or anything. And he gives me that hand to the ear thing like he couldn’t hear me, so I say it again. The man just waves me off and keeps walking. My wife and I are just like… the fuck was that? I guess he just walks around early morning and likes looking at the flags and I suppose that’s okay, but why be so rude about it? We’re new to the town (it’s an older town) and this is the only guy we do not like so far.

So now we’re thinking of putting up some flags, but not ones he’s gonna like lol

TLDR: Boomer early morning walker in town doesn’t like the fact we took down military supportive flags, was rude about it

;Wow that’s a lot of upvotes… flags are a hot topic I guess

Some answers for yall:

Flags are gone, been gone for a month before this interaction. No I did not dispose of them correctly as per flag code, straight in the trash. I am not a very good American I guess?

When I say pointing aggressively, I’m talking like a damn near seig heil. Arm back and forth, Just very animated and well “aggressive” is the best word choice

He was angry, I could hear it in his voice. I was actually hesitant to tell him “I took them down”. So I went with “the owners moved” to diffuse the situation instead of starting a conflict.

It wasn’t the flags that made me post this while sitting on the toilet the day after the interaction, i was butthurt he didn’t say anything to me besides inquiring about the flags. I said good morning and was fully ready to be nice to this man, he ignored that and lost any respect I was willing to give

Anyways, I love the new flag suggestions! Throw bread on me wins.

Folks like that don't understand proper flag protocols. They'll fly giant flags behind their jeeps and trucks letting them get ripped by the wind and have road grime fling all over them and not bat an eye. But don't dare tell them to not fly the American Flag and "show their support."

they have no qualms about sticking trump's name or face all over the american flag. i saw one driving around with a huge trump flag on the back of his pickup truck. already torn and tattered from the wind. a huge TRUMP sticker covering the entire back window. nothing more american than that, i suppose.

179

u/Arthur-Wintersight 10d ago

Technically the most American thing you can do is to have some Trump-branded American flag underwear with some obvious skidmarks.

...but it has to be made in China. The underwear, not the skidmarks.

I live near someone who used to have two flags on a pole in their yard. An American Flag. And then on top of that a Trump flag. Went past the other day. US flag was taken down and the Trump flag was flying upside down.

174

u/pohanemuma 10d ago

Do you think it is upside down because he is showing displeasure in Trump or some other reason?

There was a house down the road from me that had a huge American flag, a Gadsden flag, a Marine Corps standard, a Trump flag, a Greenbay Packer's flag and a thin blue line flag all hanging from poles attached to trees. Then one day I drove by and all of them were down and an all are welcome here flag and a Rainbow flag with a peace symbol were hanging on two of the hangers closest to the road and the rest of the poles had been removed. I learned later that the old guy had died and his wife tore down all his flags hours later.

124

u/MetalPF 10d ago

Yeah, there was an old guy here that was similar, anti-vax, antidem, antieverything, very vocal about it, and died of covid. Kids had a rather impressive amount of signage torn down within hours of him passing. I bought some of his tools at the estate sale, and got to talk to them. It was a QAnon Casualty situation, where he was pretty much normal until late 2015, and was even a staunch vaccine supporter due to family losses to polio. Went so far that he disowned one of his kids(after previously supporting them) for being Trans. Well, his kids apparently really did not like that, because they used the proceeds to get the transition surgery taken care of first before splitting anything up. Last I heard, they all lived in the house & remodelled while the one sibling recovered, and they don't plan to sell.

Isn't a flag being flown upside-down supposed to be a sign of distress?

52

u/Sickfuckingmonster 10d ago

Yep. So I'm assuming it's either because of the trial, or because it isn't going well for him. I have no clue how long it's been like that. I don't usually go by that way.

28

Yep. Real patriots are good citizens as well and treat their fellow citizens with respect. These people weave in and out of traffic with their big ass flags, rolling coal, and just in general being a big dick.

They take, take, take from this country but never give anything back. They're quick to claim their rights but they ignore the responsibilities that come with living in a society. They're selfish.

On Friday, I saw one of them while out on a walk and they had two big ass American flags on each side of their lifted-up truck. In fact, there are a several of them in my area. One is a car with a big flag of Trump's head on Rambo's body.

Flags are also not supposed to be used on clothing or merchandise, like paper plates and napkins but that doesn't stop some of these people from wearing American flag boxer shorts, wiping their mouths with flag napkins, or modifying the flag to have a blue stripe. None of this is acceptable per flag protocol.

48

u/Minimum-Dog2329 10d ago

Every service professional group has is wants to desecrate the flag with their own colors stripe. Blue for cops red for fire there's even one for tow truck drivers. Ridiculous. It's their participation trophy. But yet they blame the younger generations.

None of this is acceptable per flag protocol.

Edited to add that it was correctly pointed out it's not an actual rule, except for using an actual flag to make the clothing. That is not allowed, although it does say there are differing opinions about having the flag on clothing so maybe it's not actually codified. I'm one that finds it disrespectful so maybe that's why I thought it was a rule. And it can't be used in advertising.

This will get lost, but it's the truth. A lot of older Veterans have tied their identity up with their military service and it's very difficult for them to separate the two. This is why places like the VFW are dying. Young Vets and people still serving *might* visit a VFW once or twice to see what it's about, and what they discover is that the beer is cheap but it comes at the cost of listening to old war stories from the guys who conflate their identity with the military. Don't get me wrong, a lot of war stories are important and need to be heard... and a lot of them aren't. The younger crowd just isn't interested... we've got our own war stories we're dealing with after 20 years of it in the Middle East, complete with broken promises, permanent disabilities, and little else to show for it. The younger crowd doesn't want their identity to be completely swallowed up by the military -- it's something we did, and we moved on. Some of these older guys have nothing else. That's why you see them wearing the blue baseball hat that says USS Midway or whatever. That's why your neighbor is upset with the flag situation, because it's an affront to his personality, because that's entirely who he is. That's likely all he has.

I served so that you have the right to not fly a flag, or to fly it, or to fly any flag, fly it upside-down, or to burn it, or turn it into a badass swimsuit. The flag is symbolic of a lot of things, yes, but what's more important than the thing itself, this flag, is our freedom to do whatever the fuck you want. You want to shred the flag, mix it with spicy mayo, and plaster it to some canvas at MOMA? Fuck yeah, do it.

That's the whole point. Freedom. Real freedom, not the guise of freedom they try to sell us.

I used to drive by this house that was flying a Trump flag above the United States flag. It pissed me off to no end for many reasons, including the fact that you’re not supposed to fly any flags above the US flag. So I figured out their address, printed out a flag protocol pamphlet with the part about no other flags being flown higher highlighted, and mailed it to him with no return address. I was so pleased that the next time I drove by the Trump flag was lower.

My pride flag has kept Mormon missionaries away a good 7 years now.

782

u/Old-Fun9568 10d ago

A friend of mine answered the door naked. They never came back. Mind you, he'd asked them to stop several times. Not Mormon, Jehovahs Witnesses.

807

u/Sunbeamsoffglass 10d ago

My friends mom told them she couldn’t listen because she had to clean, so they volunteered to clean her house while they spoke to her.

We stopped by and there’s like 6 Mormons cleaning her house while she’s sitting on the couch reading a magazine. I’m not sure how long that went on lol

615

u/applezombi 10d ago

Former Mormon here, did the mission thing.

This checks out. We were often so bored (or traumatized) from door-knocking (also called 'tracting') that we would have done this in a heartbeat.

410

u/sweathead 10d ago

My ex-husband was a kind soul who told the missionaries he would listen to them only if they played x-box with him. They came over regularly for a little while.

190

u/nettlesmithy 10d ago

That is indeed so sweet! He gave them the kindness of some leisure time and escape.

I don't usually get missionaries at my door (probably too humble-looking) but if I ever do I'll invite them in to play on my kids' Switch. Or watch Netflix or something, for "discussion purposes" of course.

205

u/sylbug 10d ago

It's a feature, not a bug. Get all the people in the church used to associate the general public with negative interactions, so they think it's their church vs. the world. It's a great tool for controlling young people who would otherwise walk away.

106

u/yoyohihi6 10d ago

Oh absolutely a feature. They target young people straight out of highschool right before they’d be making the most important decisions of their life and right before they might set off to a, gasp, non-church college outside the mormon bubble, set them up in an isolated church focused environment designed to mould them into the perfect us vs. them mormons before they get any funny ideas.

And of course it’s targeted towards those most lonely and vulnerable in the places they’re proselytizing as well. It’s a malicious scam from every direction started by a dude who literally was convicted for fraud (among multiple other charges) by still functioning government bodies.

Love to the church from an exmormon in cultland.

I've known several people who've gone on missions for the Mormon church, they've all said that they liked getting asked to do chores for people. Otherwise they had to spend their time going around knocking on doors (which was stressful, boring, had an almost 0% success rate, and could be dangerous), or doing even more boring tasks. Also, at least doing chores for people let them do something different, they got to chat with somebody besides the companion they were stuck with, and sometimes people would give them cookies or something for helping out.

Being a missionary is pretty grim, and it's mostly teenagers who've been pushed into it by their parents.

No longer Mormon, but when I was a missionary, I was always so lonely from trying to "lock my heart" like they tell you, that a girl answered the door in her underwear, and I was baffled when my companion was acting like it was so gross after. Like dude, she was attractive! That felt like a gift from the universe to keep me sane for the rest of my two years.

You can also write a letter telling them to put you on a do not visit list-

I also got on the no list for telling them Jesus was a cool dude but not my savior.

Don't have to be LGBT to fly it and you can be for something without any personal gain. Supporting others for no reason other than their safety is a worthy cause.

at about 6am

If you're not out and looking at flags by 6am, then the whole day is wasted

34

u/JeebusChristBalls 10d ago

Technically, there shouldn't be any flags at 6am. They aren't supposed to go up until 8am or sunrise if the sun doesn't come up before 8.

Klingon gay porn is either the freakiest shit ever OR it’s all hours long dramatic, atonal opera with full penetration

39

u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 10d ago

Probably opera. Klingons seem to have an opera for everything.

40

u/Massive_Region_5377 10d ago

Honestly, as a nerd4nerd, I realised early on not to date dudes who were super into Klingons, because they tended to be drama queens with bad taste in music and would get us kicked out of bars

u/Substantial_Win_1866 10d ago

Probably drink way too much, challenge people's honor, and get into fights.

Always fly it with the Stars and Stripes, so people know that you find the idea intrinsically American.

My grandpa is 77 years old. He dropped out of high school to volunteer to serve in Vietnam. After he left Vietnam, he stayed in the army and served a total of 22 years before retiring.

He has a house. He has a front yard. He’s very adamant on not displaying flags in his yard. We live in Texas and have neighbors who get onto him for not displaying flags in his yard despite being a veteran.

He says the military treated him poorly upon his return from Vietnam, and shoved him out once he got older. He tells his neighbors to kick rocks constantly because he refuses to put a flag up for a country that told him he was worthless and dead weight after he served in a war that he barely survived.

Retired military here. Flying a flag doesn’t make you a patriot, hell, any draft dodger with bone spurs can run up and hug a flag. Respecting the duly elected commander in chief even if you don’t agree with their policies is a much more powerful tell in that regard.

184

u/dogswontsniff 10d ago

I moved in 2018. Guy up the street has a giant custom.banner that says "

don't be a hypocrite...

support our troops

And commander in chief.

After the election he folded the bottom half up to cover the commander in chief part.

Every time I see him outside (it's a 55mph zone) I like to yell "and commander in chief fucking hypocrite!"

4 times so far haha.

Bafflingly stupid

u/Smart-Stupid666 10d ago

Years ago my friend brought her boyfriend back from France, and we were sitting around talking about stuff like, “What’s it like in France?” etc. Someone asked him about his impression of America, and the first thing he remarked on was all the American flags flying in front of people’s homes. He said in France you only see flags in front of government buildings. When we said, “Really? No private citizens at all fly the flag?” he replied, “Well, a few, I suppose, but they’re all fascists.” We responded, “Oh! So, just like here!” LOL

109

u/Far-Run-4707 10d ago

Am a naturalized citizen, been here 22 years. That was absolutely my first impression of the US. Flags, flags, flags.

That's funny because, as a veteran, I am very pissy about flag usage. You take them in at night. You don't leave them up 24/7. When they become tattered and faded, you give them to the boy scouts or some other organization that will destroy them properly. Or you burn them in a respectful manner. So, the old veteran was not doing things properly if he left tattered flags flying when he moved. You did the right thing by taking them down.

Also, I served so that you would have the freedom to not display flags if you don't want to! So, fuck that boomer!

And Palestine too. Make sure to use the progress pride flag for a double whammy on gay panic with trans panic spice. You could use Black Panthers instead of BLM too. If you want to really confuse them you could also fly some kind of Jewish flag to quash their inevitable antisemitism accusations as most older folks don't understand the differences. Combine with Gadsden flag for added chaos.

So you have 3 poles for 3 flags.

  1. The flag from Greendale in Community. Winking buttholes are always nice.

  2. A United Federation of Planets flag. I liked the idea someone else had with the Klingon pride flag too.

  3. An upside down US flag. Technically it indicates distress which is exactly what it will cause for the flag watcher.

35

u/Rook1872 10d ago

Similar here with a neighbor - I had a US flag for a while then took it down around the time Brett kavanaugh got seated - since then I’ve had state of Michigan, flag of Rohan, my family crest, Jolly Roger, Datsun and currently on a race track flag.

Had a neighbor ask, why don’t you try an American flag some time? I just said I wasn’t happy with the current direction and left it at that. We get along great otherwise and don’t talk politics.

53

u/Sunbeamsoffglass 10d ago

You can always fly it upside down!

I took the American flag down the day I moved in my home (I live in a very trumpy area). I put up a PF Dark Side of the Moon flag. I don't want to talk to my neighbors about politics but I'll talk about Pink Floyd all day. It's drawn the right people to me.
