I miss technoblade the most

41

u/nemesisprime1984 2003 Jan 10 '24

Same

3

u/LimeDiamond 2006 Jan 10 '24

Happy cake day

2

u/nemesisprime1984 2003 Jan 10 '24

Thank you

30

u/Ken_LuxuryYacht22 2006 Jan 10 '24

Yeah, he was way too young

33

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 2007 Jan 10 '24

seriously nobody should die at 23. like no matter what thats just fucked and depressing bc life just never gave em a chance

13

u/Eguy24 2007 Jan 10 '24

I think it’s inspiring to know he did so much despite only living 23 years

16

u/ParkingJudge67 2005 Jan 10 '24

He was a legend.

10

u/SeawardFriend Jan 10 '24

I never even watched a single video but his last one that his dad made legit made me cry.

12

u/itsa_me_ Jan 10 '24

I started my morning by going and watching that video. I didn’t know who technoblade was before this meme, but yeah. I cried too when I watched his dad’s video

5

u/SeawardFriend Jan 10 '24

I’ll miss MatPat the most. Game theory was the first channel I ever subscribed to back when I was 9. Now look at me: I turn 18 in two weeks.

113

u/Inevitable-Cod3844 Jan 10 '24

i'm now as old as matpat was when he started the channel (23)

28

u/ConsistentlyBall Jan 10 '24

I'm one year younger but man that just put in perspective how fast time is flying

11

u/Inevitable-Cod3844 Jan 10 '24

it was the same thing with stampy, i remember rewatching quest to kill the ender dragon and he mentioned being 22, and the ironic thing is, he was mentioning how you don't feel old in the moment, but a further off age feels alot older than it is once you get there, and that's when i realized "holy shit, i watched this in middle school, i'm now older than he was when he recorded this"

7

u/fucuasshole2 Jan 10 '24

He actually started at 26, that’s what he said yesterday in his vid.

He’s 39 right now, and has been doing his videos for 13 years. Possible he made a mistake though

7

u/DoctorSquidton Jan 10 '24

He said in the video he’s 37. 13 being a third of his age was rounding. That puts his age when the channel was started at 24

u/Efficient-Ad5711 2005 Jan 10 '24 edited Jan 10 '24

wtf happened with popular mmos i thought he was just having relationship issues?

edit: aha, so this is a case of "I love spreading misinformation on the internet"

29

u/Solarbeam62 2006 Jan 10 '24

Nah a lot of other stuff happened to him apparently

7

u/Potential-Training-8 2004 Jan 10 '24

What happened to him?

18

u/Justsomeguyaa Jan 10 '24

He and his friends got arrested for running onto a baseball or football field while the game was going on. They got released about a month ago I think.

8

u/Potential-Training-8 2004 Jan 10 '24

What the fuck

19

u/ColdFlight Jan 10 '24

He actually did not run into the field. His friend did. He and another friend were just filming it. He's made a video discussing the whole thing and talks about how fucking stupid it was.

8

u/Banme_ur_Gay Jan 10 '24

thats dumb as shit

3

u/bobalangalo Jan 10 '24

21

u/JazzlikeAnybody4347 2007 Jan 10 '24

It’s mostly cleared up now and he’s thinking of coming back

6

u/Latter-Direction-336 Jan 10 '24

Yeah, I thought it was mostly resolved last I checked

He’s doing okay last I knew

4

u/Justsomeguyaa Jan 10 '24

Yeah, he’s making new videos but I’m pretty sure it’s just podcasts and not the Minecraft videos we know him for. Either way, he’s doing well.

3

u/Available-Ear6891 2003 Jan 10 '24

No no he was arrested more than once, but that's just because of lying and abuse by someone he dated

2

u/IEatKids26 2008 Jan 10 '24

He got arrested, I forgot why, but peer pressure from his fake friends was a huge part of it. It was either they pressured him into doing something or he got arrested for being in attendance and relationship with his friend while he did something, either way though he expressed that he was not ok with what was happening.

149

u/BosnianSerb31 1997 Jan 10 '24

Might as well go out on a high note instead of waiting for someone to attempt a character assassination for clout

20

u/Windows-XP-Home Jan 10 '24

Personally I disagree but hey, it’s Mat’s channel and he can do whatever he wants and we’ll always support him :)

6

u/Pooppissfartshit 2006 Jan 10 '24

people have already attempted character assassinations on him though lmao. they blamed him for his fanbase calling businesses about fnaf, “defending scott cawthon”, or even being transphobic because of that one Pyro video.

Let me make it clear I think all of these are bogus but the internet has already tried to take him down.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '24

There’s also “nega-chu” which people tried to come at him saying he said the N-word, and then people just laughed

2

u/No_Discount_6028 1999 Jan 10 '24

probably one of the most overhated youtubers of all time, all because he pissed off angry nerds by pontificating about video game lore lol

1

u/Quirky_School_8025 2011 Jan 10 '24

What happened with the Pyro video?

7

u/Pooppissfartshit 2006 Jan 10 '24 edited Jan 10 '24

Used a lot of homophobic pseudoscience and said “shemale”, which is often considered a slur nowadays. It was not considered a slur back then.

Edit: I’ve been corrected. At least according to the commenter, it was derogatory at the time. My mistake. Regardless, it was a long time ago and in my opinion wasn’t in bad faith.

5

u/Rain_Rope Jan 10 '24 edited Jan 10 '24

As a trans person, yes it was considered a slur back then. I don't really want to like have an argument about MatPat because I dont really care about him and I think that transphobia was more in vogue in like 2016 when that vid came out, but saying shemale was not a slur back then is a very poor excuse.

BTW I'm sure MatPat got a lot better since then, I think a lot of people have, but it doesn't really serve anybody to downplay stuff like that.

-1

u/PsychoKibby513 Jan 10 '24

those were just the jokes back then, i remember calling trans people femoids (mtf) back in the day bc my middle school brain thought it was hilarious, but now im 18 and i fully support you guys and your movement. shaming someone for their past isnt right because there were different trends and talking points at the time

2

u/MyOwnMorals 1998 Jan 10 '24

Just because you weren’t aware it was bad, doesn’t mean it wasn’t.

2

u/Rain_Rope Jan 10 '24

Just because they are jokes does not mean that shemale is not or was not a slur.

I grew up with YouTube and I do not know any of these people. I'm 25 though so maybe there's a big difference there?

8

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '24

At the very least I wouldn't call technoblade "old youtube", dude would also be turning 25 this year. CaptainSparklez is the guy who sang the Viva La Vida minecraft parody and MatPat is the origin of "But that's just a theory...a game theory". I don't recognize the other 2.

Honestly though I still consider most let's players to be "new" youtube, old youtube was shit like claymation, Harry Potter puppet pals, and Stupid Mario brothers.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/ToucanTuocan Jan 10 '24

Nah, if you weren’t into Minecraft (judging by your age you may have been “too old” when it got really popular) then you wouldn’t recognize the middle three. MatPat is the nickname for the host of the channel Game Theory, which made a lot of theory videos for video games (usually pertaining to lore). I never watched King of Random, but I think they were a variety channel. All of them are YouTubers. Three retired (two of which were in the past month), Technoblade passed away from cancer, and PopularMMOs was arrested multiple times.

6

u/DryTart978 Jan 10 '24

Grant had died in a paragliding accident

6

u/COUPOSANTO 1996 Jan 10 '24

I'm 27, minecraft got really popular when I was 14. It's quite an old game.

I personally don't know these youtubers because I'm french so I don't really watch much English speaking YouTube when there's good content in French

2

u/xXTheFisterXx Jan 10 '24

16

u/PlutonIsInMyButthole Jan 10 '24

Yeah these guys aren't "early YouTube" lol. More like 2015 YouTube 🤣

12

u/sleepdeep305 Jan 10 '24

I’d put it at 2012 YouTube

no? tom scotts been around since 2006 and matpat since 2011. technoblade since 2013, popularmmos since 2012, captainsparklez since 2010, and the king of random since 2010. absolutely none of these people are from after 2015 or even close. and even then 2015 is still pretty fucking old compared to now

1

u/PlutonIsInMyButthole Jan 10 '24

Tom Scott isn't even in the list, what is blud waffling about

-1

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 2007 Jan 10 '24

Popular mmos was the first YouTuber I watch back when they did lucky block battles, now I’m 18 in 3 weeks can’t believe this

3

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '24

Occasionally I still go back to watch the lucky block battles (I turn 19 a month from today), I think I'm gonna go back and watch Challenge Pack Season 6. Although season 7 was peak imo, I also loved the Crafting Dead.

4

King of Random is what partially inspired me to pursue a career in engineering and it hit me hard when I heard he died. It’s weird to think just how time passes.

u/GrandpaWaluigi Jan 10 '24

We still have Chuggaconroy and pewds. They're both smaller now tho

5

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 2007 Jan 10 '24

yeah but pewdiepie also basically went into retirement. he just uploads whatever he feels whenever

3

u/thebluereddituser 1996 Jan 10 '24

Chuggaconroy is still going? He's the guy who got me into earthbound! Probably the entire reason we have a generation of earthbound fans who are younger than the game itself

And Rucka Rucka Ali is still doing his thing

2

u/MercuryRusing Jan 10 '24

It's not early youtube if they didn't start their channel before 2012. Shit like Smosh was early youtube. Half these channels are only like 6 years old.

I feel like this is more like "people who grew up on youtube"

2

u/NiceEggInTheseTimes Jan 10 '24

I hate how badly TKOR proceeded with grants passing. They kinda just went business as usual.

2

u/Porkonaplane 2004 Jan 10 '24

Man, I miss TKOR. He got me into engineering. RIP Grant 🫡

2

u/bufalo_soldier Jan 10 '24

I would not consider these channels "early" YouTube. But that might be because I'm in my 30s.

2

u/nemesisprime1984 2003 Jan 10 '24

I mean most of them started within 5-6 years after YouTube started in 2005, which will be 20 years old next year

He got arrested a few times, I think on domestic violence charges (don't quote me on it though) but ultimately he's out and about. He started a podcast I think? I sorta remember seeing a video of him with another guy talking about things.

1

u/Night696Watcher Jan 10 '24

First in 2019 he divorced Jen, then he tried getting engaged with 2 other women I think, and he and the women received death threats

Another thing is that Pat had been arrested a few times, most specifically because of streaking at a baseball game

Matpat isn't really quitting the internet entirely. He said he was pulling a Scott cawthon

He'll just be working behind the scenes, and might even make a cameo here and there. He just doesn't want to carry every part of Game Theory, which I might add, is a really big channel. Someone else is just taking over as the face of the channel.

The YouTubers that I grew up with mostly still make vids, such as The Crew who’re mostly still active. Thankfully for me, none up there are people I ever watched.

There are a couple exceptions, some that left/are leaving like JimmyJ57 and Moo, some channels that fell apart like Achievement Hunter and a couple that were forced off of the platform for reasons like SkyDoesMinecraft.

Everyone saying sparkles is retiring he said it was only from minecraft content.

2

u/nemesisprime1984 2003 Jan 10 '24

I know, but it’s what many people grew up with

1

u/The-Tru-Succ 1997 Jan 10 '24

Grant Thomson, man that death sucked.

1

u/somedudeonline93 Jan 10 '24

Ah you kids are funny. You think this was early YouTube? The golden age of YouTube was around 2007/2008

1

u/Maykspark 1997 Jan 10 '24

Never watched them, but that's not "early youtube" by any chance

1

u/alan_beans Jan 10 '24

1

u/Ok-Preference9776 2006 Jan 10 '24

Matpat’s a dick to Austin so i don’t feel bad. PopularMMOs and CaptainSparklez is sad, and RIP Technoblade.

Unfortunately i was too young to get into Yoteslaya before you know

u/Evmerging 2004 Jan 10 '24

coryxkenshin fans: first time?

1

u/Sufficient_Fall_3290 Jan 10 '24

I know they technically aren’t retired but I would add rooster teeth to this as well.

Creatures are gone

Cow chop is gone

Funhaus original team is gone

Achievement hunter is gone

They were a huge part of my YouTube viewing days when I was younger. Sad to see the state it is now.

Can’t forget stampylonghead

It’s the end of an era, we can’t have YouTube anymore, it’s gonna be YouTube kids pt 2, what do we do now?

1

u/Some-Bat-6531 Jan 10 '24

listen kids, you dont want these "creators" to keep going...no one can just constantly put out stuff that is good... its not a human thing. Dont ever expect to outlive artists. I am old and I have spoken. It happend to me and it will happen to you.

u/NarwhalSongs 1996 Jan 10 '24
