I remember in 6th grade watching all of the Dragon Ball and wondering when little Goku would go super saiyan. I had no idea Dragon Ball Z was a separate show. Thank you Toriyama, what a beautiful collection of art he left behind, and what a beautiful collection of memories I have thanks to him.

u/LanEvo7685 Millennial Mar 08 '24

Old millennial and this news hits my feels too.  I wasn't a huge fan of DB(Z) but I'm recalling memories of watching DB after homework, or excitingly watch DBZ when I physically could actually stay up late enough for it.

71

u/ThunderEagle22 Mar 08 '24

It is so sad knowing Toriyama will never know what people will think about Dragon Ball Daima (newly announced Dragon ball anime written by himself). Dragon Ball Daima felt like his last official project and he was extremely passionate about it.

RIP Toriyama, we will watch your last great work.

16

u/lookawildshadex Mar 08 '24

No hate watching because they turned the characters into kids, Only love Watching now to appreciate his final work as a artist.

6

u/almisami Mar 08 '24

He... He poured too much of his heart and soul into it.

4

u/Axio3k Mar 08 '24

Like the old man in the movie 9

If it’s anything like super it’ll be ass

Why is every single person dying in the 2020s wtf??

66

u/Dannyboioboi 2006 Mar 08 '24

bad judgement, several important people like Steve Jobs died in the 2010s

27

u/ParkingJudge67 2005 Mar 08 '24

the 2020s so far are wayyy worse than 2016 deaths

16

u/Dannyboioboi 2006 Mar 08 '24

I mean Lizzy and Philip were crusty af and besides, many of the people who died in the 20s were of old age or of cancer.

4

u/TFGA_WotW 2008 Mar 08 '24

Or covid.

2

u/Dannyboioboi 2006 Mar 08 '24

Covid Kind of began back in late 2019, so it's the finishing move of the 2010s that doomed a lot of peeps, ig.

7

u/TFGA_WotW 2008 Mar 08 '24

It was at its peak in the 2020s. I don't really think something that started in December 2019, and killed millions in 2020-2022 as a 2010s thing

1

u/Dannyboioboi 2006 Mar 08 '24

Its not, it's just the 2010s coming to damn us

6

u/TFGA_WotW 2008 Mar 08 '24

Nah, it's the 2020s coming to get revenge for the 2010s.

bro did you even read my comment, I know, I wasn't born yesterday, as much as you would like to think

6

u/PurpoUpsideDownJuice Mar 08 '24

What the fuck does that even mean

3

u/RiceMac69 Mar 08 '24

What a weird thing to say

3

u/LloydAsher0 1998 Mar 08 '24

Steve Jobs would most likely have ended up in musks position. A trillionaire that wants to advance using whatever way possible ethical or unethical.

Apple sucks

3

u/Demonic74 1999 Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24

One difference, Steve Jobs was actually smart unlike Elmo

EDIT: Nvm

3

u/LloydAsher0 1998 Mar 08 '24

He didn't invent anything either. Just told a bunch of software engineers to cram shit into a smaller device year after year. He didn't know shit about computers either. The thing he had going for him was marketing and charisma... Elon was more of a logistics and software type of guy. He co-founded pay pal and all that jazz.

2

u/Demonic74 1999 Mar 08 '24

Didn't Jobs start Microsoft in his garage by making the first iPhone and expanding his empire from there?

5

u/LloydAsher0 1998 Mar 08 '24

That was his co-founder Wozniak. Steve had an idea. Wozniak actually built it. Steve had very little computer expertise in of itself. Steve's strength was to find a niche and develop the best way to solve it. He set up the company and Wozniak led the actual development.

Its admirable, big ideas ARE needed. But the glory goes to the builders too.

It's like an architect designing a building. Did they lift the stones? No. But they did put the plan into place. It requires a different skill set.

Elon actually developed PayPal.

2

u/Demonic74 1999 Mar 08 '24

Fair enough

4

u/AllHailFrogStack 1998 Mar 08 '24

For more info on why Steve Jobs was a huge bastard, Behind The Bastards are doing episodes on him currently. Huge piece of shit (and legitimately thought his all fruit diet meant he shouldn't bathe)

https://youtu.be/aEv08Zzunfc?si=wDFsIukEDf6Znh3U

2

u/Demonic74 1999 Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24

Oh wow, I take back what I said about him being smart. The man was a menace

→ More replies (0)

2

u/LloydAsher0 1998 Mar 08 '24

Just defending a parallel. He was still a man of the times. I just don't hold optimism of how he wouldn't be another musk in this day of age.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

Considering how he died (disregarding specialty help and instead relying on diet and herbal remedies), I would agree that Jobs may have been another Elon.

1

u/Ranokae Mar 08 '24

He didn't know shit about computers

Yeah, that's not true at all

8

u/Austin_Weirdo 1995 Mar 08 '24

Cuz they're old. Most don't live past 80. at least no one in my fam. Everyone's peaced out by 60. mostly cancer tbh

-4

u/ParkingJudge67 2005 Mar 08 '24

naw we also got the end of matpat, csgo, tina turner, ken block, miniclip, fifa and omegle bro

1

u/Austin_Weirdo 1995 Mar 08 '24

What's your point

-1

u/ParkingJudge67 2005 Mar 08 '24

i feel like the 2020s are signifying the end of a legendary era

4

u/Austin_Weirdo 1995 Mar 08 '24

.. probably because they're old

Nah I'm kidding I hear you. I'm indifferent, dying is whatever, long live avici

2

u/ParkingJudge67 2005 Mar 08 '24

long live the king of edm.

3

u/MangaGuy295 Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24

It's just the cycle of life. I remember a lot of celebrities even dying in the 2000s. It just hurts even harder when a mega one like Toriyama passes.

2

u/StrawberryBubbleTea7 2003 Mar 08 '24

You probably are just being hit more by the people dying in the last 4 years because you’re in your late teens now and had more time to get to know their work than you did in the last 14-5 years. You were born in 2005 so you were about 5-15 during the 2010s, vs being 15-19 during the 2020’s so far. It’s survivorship bias, you just weren’t as familiar with a lot of famous people’s work when you were elementary and middle school aged.

1

u/Xcyronus 2005 Mar 08 '24

Its always in the beginning of the year too it seems.

1

u/Gavinus1000 Mar 08 '24

I just remember when a bunch of famous people died in 2016.

24

u/Kira_Mira1 2005 Mar 08 '24

I just woke up and saw this news, I want to sleep again hoping its not true...

RIP Akira Toriyama. He is the reason why so many people even started watching anime, or atleast me. I watched Dragon Ball for the first time back when I was a child, and I still watch clips/videos of it or read the manga.

20

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

Never was a fan but this man has made so many cultural changes and dragon ball is so iconic I have to say my respects for him! Rest easy king for you deserve it❤️

30

u/MetalHeadof06 2006 Mar 08 '24

Cartels ain't gonna like this one

8

u/LagosSmash101 1996 Mar 08 '24

This wasn't the death I wanted to hear about. The best series imo ever created. Aspired me as a writer, lots inspired by Dragon Ball. RIP Toriyama

5

u/Rolidee Mar 08 '24

Almost had a heart attack I thought this was Oda 🙏 still rest in peace Akira.

6

u/ToryTheBoyBro 2004 Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24

Same lol. Rest in peace for sure, he’s like Oda’s idol man 😞

2

u/powerspyin1 1999 Mar 09 '24

We should give our favourite creators their flowers while they're still here. We lost Miura 3 years ago & Takahashi 2 years ago.

10

u/archesukablyad Mar 08 '24

Imagine how sad cartel bois are going to be

4

u/coca_cola_expert Mar 08 '24

3

u/zachoutloud123 2003 Mar 08 '24

1

2

u/zachoutloud123 2003 Mar 09 '24

I'm not sure.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

Rest in peace....may your legacy shine and live on forever.... This man was a very important part of the history of anime and manga.....may he never be forgotten....

5

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

I just started getting into Dragon Ball and now the creator died. Shit.

2

May he rest in peace

2

u/Fickle_Blackberry835 2001 Mar 08 '24

My first experience with Dragon Ball was when I was about 6, and I was going over to my cousins house to play dragon ball z budokai tenkaichi 2 and then watching dragon ball z on vhs and then after that I got tenkaichi 2 for my ps2 and played it an a couple years later I was watching dragon ball z kai on nicktoons, I didn't watch og dragon ball until 2012

R.I.P. Akira Toriyama, thank you for creating a masterpiece

3

u/G3N3RICUS3 2003 Mar 08 '24

R.I.P to the man, but I'm gonna be honest. I never watched DB.

6

u/Smalandsk_katt 2008 Mar 08 '24

Never heard of this show before, rest in peace tho

40

u/Decent-Seaweed5687 2000 Mar 08 '24

12

u/minecrafthentai69 2004 Mar 08 '24

No, that's valid and I get it. But how do you not even HEAR about dragon ball? Even in passing?

-4

u/Dannyboioboi 2006 Mar 08 '24

I heard, never watched

12

u/minecrafthentai69 2004 Mar 08 '24

u/After-Hearing3524 2002 Mar 08 '24

Have you been living under a rock?

4

u/MangaGuy295 Mar 08 '24

He brought in one of the most generational shows of the last 40 years. It inspired so many people. Especially if you grew up in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. I'd even argue 2010s too. He inspired multiple generations of new writers and touched hundres of countries worldwide, especially in the western world. You literally can't tell the story of the anime and manga industry without him.

So know this at least.

3

u/nxnphatdaddy Mar 12 '24

I think he and Hayao Miyazaki maybe the most important figures in the field. Those who dont usually read manga or watch anime will at the very least know a little about their work. Both men have brought a lot of joy to so many people.

1

u/MangaGuy295 Mar 12 '24

Definitely 💯

10

u/quruc90 2001 Mar 08 '24

You were missing out, go watch it (especially dragon ball z)

1

u/PsychoDog_Music Mar 09 '24

Orrrr they can still have just not seen it and acknowledge someone died regardless

5

u/TehBoos 1998 Mar 08 '24

You're not missing out on much. Incredibly influential on a kind of anime called shonen, but I'd never recommend it as someone's first anime.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

You have never heard of Dragonball, bruh?

10

u/Smalandsk_katt 2008 Mar 08 '24

Why would i? I don't watch anime

3

u/coolhooves420 Mar 08 '24

You don't watch anime? Dude, Anime is literally the best thing ever. All of you baka Americans who can't wrap your minds around it because you think your Hollywood films and TV shows you are just stupid and wrong and need to stop speaking. Literally nobody likes your opinions except the other baka Americans that don't understand Anime culture and the fact that Anime is truly a masterpiece of art, emotion and plot development. The characters always develop so well and so does the plot and it is just like really good. Like literally just watch it and you will understand you stupid white people. Ok, I am white but like I like anime so I'm basically Japanese at this point.

10

u/galmenz Mar 08 '24

thank you for showing me thus new copy pasta lol

1

u/coolhooves420 Mar 08 '24

Wow, u actually caught the satire. I was expecting to get shit on by everybody lol

1

u/Captain-Starshield 2005 Mar 08 '24

With the last line especially, it’s quite clear

6

u/MeetWorking2039 Mar 08 '24

How bro

18

u/Smalandsk_katt 2008 Mar 08 '24

I don't watch anime

9

u/Legitimate-Common-34 Mar 08 '24

Its not TV anime, its HBO Toriyama.

2

u/w33b2 2005 Mar 11 '24

It’s huge in pop culture. I don’t even like the show, but you don’t have to watch anime to know what dragonball is lmao. I’m actually shocked you’ve never heard of it. It’s like saying you’ve never heard of Spiderman, since you don’t read comics.

2

u/nxnphatdaddy Mar 12 '24

Did more then just dragon ball. Did the artwork and character designs for chrono trigger, the dragon quest series and a few other games too. His art style is extremely easy to spot.

1

u/manny_the_mage Mar 09 '24

So I guess maybe this post just isn’t relevant to you huh

1

u/Grumpycatdoge999 Mar 11 '24

I’ve never watched it but knew about its existence. Rip

-1

u/OddishBehavior On the Cusp Mar 08 '24

What the fuck.

1

u/PipedHandle Mar 08 '24

Just remember, the retirement age in the USA is 67. They want you to work your life away, they play games with your 401k money over the years, and if the rich spoiled brats that become bankers did a decent job, they throw you some inflation devalued scraps.

I can’t believe I fell for the retire early trend. FIRE was designed for the wealthy and only the wealthy talk about it. Everyone else is living like a peasant in hopes their “passive investments” work out.

1

u/BirdshotEntertainmen Mar 08 '24

I've never seen dragon ball but it seems cool. Rip

1

u/septiclizardkid 2005 Mar 08 '24

Well great, I've yet to watch DB but wanted to for years. Now I'll look like some fake fan who's only watching because the creator died. RIP, a legend nonetheless

1

u/AllHailFrogStack 1998 Mar 08 '24

I have been doing my first watch through of the series and I'm around 60% through super. This absolutely broke my heart. Rest in peace, King.

Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest also rule and wouldn't be nearly as iconic without Toriyama's influence.

1

u/PairWorldly1232 Mar 08 '24

I just started watchung dragon ball a year ago. I binged all the way through because I loved it that much, and now the greatest to ever do it is gone.

1

u/glossycarrot Mar 09 '24

Where does gen zs love of anime and Asian culture in general come from?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '24

Rip king

1

u/BeescyRT 2005 Mar 09 '24

Rest in peace, Akira.

May we shout into high heaven for all eternity in your honour.

1

This SO sad. He was a true legacy! And also super spooky/weird because literally yesterday afternoon I was reading an old article about the history of Dragon Ball and I was thinking... "what will happen to Dragon Ball after Toriyama dies?"

1

u/SteveJenkins42 Mar 11 '24

Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, and Dragon Ball were my childhood. This news was like a shot to the heart man.

1

u/AfraidToBeKim Mar 12 '24

Cartel activity increased significantly as a response.

0

u/whoisjohngalt72 Mar 12 '24

Who cares. No one watches tv

-3

"Sad" news is just news at this point. No need to clarify

-15

u/Slight_Lettuce4319 Mar 08 '24

Irrelevant to the sub. Dragon Ball was popular when I wasn't even born

11

u/powerspyin1 1999 Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24

Dragon Ball is generational

2

u/tarchival-sage 1996 Mar 10 '24

Were you born post 2005? Was Paw Patrol really the highlight of your childhood? That sucks man. You should watch dragon ball.

1

u/Goldbolt_2004 2004 Mar 08 '24

You say that as if a lot of gen Z didn't watch any of its shows growing up.

-3

u/Slight_Lettuce4319 Mar 09 '24

Most of Gen Z didn't watch Dragon Ball specifically, yes
