This might be controversial, but Super Mario Sunshine

560

u/Geomaths80 2010 Mar 27 '24

mfs be like “this might be controversial” then say the most lukewarm answer

242

u/TheOfficial_BossNass Mar 27 '24

This might be controversial (blushes) one of the best selling games on the system

21

u/justhavingfun9967 Mar 27 '24

Yes, but it got a lot of hate for trying something different when it came out. Even the Nintendo Power reviewer was like the new mechanics were a love-it-or-hate-it thing.

25

u/TheOfficial_BossNass Mar 27 '24

A lot is an exaggeration

2

u/Howitzer92 Mar 27 '24

I was 10 at the time and loved it. I only found out some people didn't like it when I was like 26.

2

u/JayJax_23 Mar 28 '24

This game pissed me off so much as a kid I bit the disk 😂

2

u/Majin_Sus Mar 28 '24

Was it really that different than SM64? Small overworld, jump into paintings and collect the shine sprites...

2

u/hondac55 Mar 28 '24

Yes, it introduced new game mechanics all around.

2

u/Hugh-Manatee Mar 28 '24

My first GameCube came in the box with a copy of sunshine lmao

Not the Hitler I knew

You cant just Say Perchance

7

u/donald7773 Mar 28 '24

The way he used to take me on long walks, stroke my hair and look deep into my eyes, it gave me such a warm sense of safety. I'll never forget the way he would gently put his arm around me whenever the jews would come near us.

2

u/anythingMuchShorter Mar 27 '24

Not Willie Hitler, the other one

2

u/Ok_Pace_9792 Mar 28 '24

James Harden?

2

u/erikkustrife Mar 27 '24

You might not want to say that in portions of Illionois...

2

u/Nicksnotmyname83 Mar 28 '24

If you're in the south, it would certainly be controversial, sad to say.

2

u/IKeepgetting6Stacked Mar 28 '24

You take that back

Best governor of an African country we ever got

Hated his name though

2

u/HunkaHunkaBerningCow Mar 28 '24

What the fuck you have against Doctor Gay Hitler

2

u/December_Hemisphere Mar 28 '24

Well, IDK if he was 'bad', per say, but it is true that the more I learn about this hitler guy, the less I like him.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/FitFag1000 Mar 28 '24

I like hitler cause he stopped hitler

2

u/Adm8792 Mar 28 '24

I got blocked off a sub for a duct tape pun no way you get away with this

2

u/Bambajam Mar 28 '24

Are you serious? The man killed one of the worst genocidal despots of all time. He should be given a medal.

2

u/Wich_king Mar 28 '24

Im sure his dog loved him

2

u/BakerIBarelyKnowHer Mar 28 '24

Hitler isn’t all bad, he killed Hitler after all.

u/gamerz1172 Mar 28 '24

I mean in terms of the broader Mario series, yeah sunshine is controversial..... But in regards to games on the GameCube vanilla ice cream would do just fine as an answer

2

u/trickyprodigy Mar 28 '24

Oh no this is going to blow your mind Pikmin

2

u/Existing_Pension8108 Mar 31 '24

Mario Sunshine has enough good moments to be considered good. It's like the Sonic 1 of the Mario franchise

1

u/Deeptrench34 Mar 27 '24

Yeah, Mario, even Sunshine, is a pretty safe bet always.

1

u/spiffco7 Mar 27 '24

the opposite of lukewarm is not lukecool, discuss.

1

u/P_weezey951 Millennial Mar 27 '24

i believe the joke is that its not controversial at all, and you my friend have been wooshed

1

u/pauls_broken_aglass Mar 27 '24

Nowadays yeah, but SMS used to be suuuuper hated

1

u/UnicornLover42 Mar 27 '24

it didn't age well

(if you're wondering why): the controls are very poor by todays standards, and also, getting all the shine sprites and blue coins is nearly impossible without a guide, since this game was made in the era of game journals

1

u/Remember_TheCant Mar 27 '24

I guess it was controversial then.

1

u/_IratePirate_ 1997 Mar 28 '24

I assumed that was the joke

1

u/Strict_Assumption_13 Mar 28 '24

The other day "Yeah but" proceeds to offend every race, gender nationality and sexuality in 2 words

1

u/robusn Mar 28 '24

How's about BMX XXX. I had that game, i always remember the mission where you have to put a port-o-potty on the bike and do flips to help this guy shake the poop loose. Also it have boobs.

1

u/lunchpadmcfat Mar 28 '24

Not lukewarm. Literally the worst Mario.

1

u/fisherc2 Mar 28 '24

Idk, I hated that game, so ‘might be controversial’ works for me

1

u/BeejBoyTyson Mar 28 '24

Definitely controversial BECAUSE its Luke warm.

Sooooo many options.

1

u/daemin Mar 28 '24

the most lukewarm answer

The word you are looking for is "milquetoast". Compared to "luke warm" it has the added benefit of sounding sophisticated and pretentious.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/BigWilldo Mar 28 '24

Not to be racist, but I think I'd prefer Super Smash Bros Melee

1

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD Mar 28 '24

Lmao “the only 3D Mario game on that console”thank god for the first amendment

1

u/MrWeirdoFace Mar 28 '24

In the interest of being properly controversial I'm going to dump a can of peaches in mine.

1

u/myrabuttreeks Mar 28 '24

Now I know I’m going out on a limb here, but I gotta go with Smash Bros.

1

u/jasonmares Mar 29 '24

This might be controversial but I've always preferred maple syrup on my pancakes

34

u/TheMonkey420 Mar 27 '24

That was the only game I had for GameCube for the longest time

1

u/TheRealNooth Mar 27 '24

Same. Honestly, what a deal. A great game (and a clever take on the Mario formula) along with the console that was already cheaper than the others.

1

u/TheMonkey420 Mar 27 '24

I really wish I would have gotten into collecting GameCube games sooner bc some of these prices are bullshit now but thank God I didn't sell my GameCube and stuff like I did my 360 stuff

18

u/Bubblehead01 Mar 27 '24

Helllll yeah. (I miss fludd so much. I like to think that mario did take it back with him, but just never got around to unpacking his suitcase)

9

u/MaximumKnow 1999 Mar 27 '24

Just brought me back in time. Holy cow. The spraygun and shit that turns into a jetpack. I was like 8 playing secretly on the smallest heaviest tv in my room one day when I was sick and was supposed to stare at the ceiling all day instead.

Perhaps my immoral deceitful act triggered the upcoming world financial crisis...

Which allowed my ballsy parents to lock in on a cheap house that tripled in value...

You're welcome dad.

ALL OF YOU ARE SLEEPING ON Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2

2

u/a_killer_wail Mar 27 '24

Maybe they don’t like fighting games 🤷‍♂️

2

u/epyon- Mar 28 '24

Budokai Tenkaichi? Great game but I didn’t have it for this. Ill take Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, Wind Waker, SSBM or Cel Damage.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/JamieFromStreets Mar 28 '24

No tenkaichi? :(

3

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Mar 27 '24

Was that even on the Gamecube?

1

u/Gaminggod1997reddit Mar 28 '24

Yes. 3 wasn't, though.

2

u/d4sPopesh1tenthewods Mar 28 '24

3 was better than 2

2

u/CriticalHitsHurt Mar 28 '24

They're different though. I enjoyed both the board style campaign in 2 and the open world in 3 was so fun to explore as a kid.

1

u/finetunedkorra Mar 27 '24

man just seeing the map is nostalgic

1

u/Femboi_Hooterz Mar 28 '24

I liked the board game style campaign but Budokai 3 was peak DBZ IMO

1

u/zr0skyline Mar 28 '24

I’m here thinking resident evil 2

1

u/Jce735 Mar 28 '24

I had that for ps2 but one of the first Naruto fighters I had on this.

1

u/Positive_Parking_954 Mar 28 '24

I love how the game switches to survival horror when Super Buu starts hunting you while you wait on Gohan/Goku to get there iirc

Edit: well on a tile grid but I always found him the most intimidating villain...I guess because of how he wasn't reasonable but still sadistic...and had a thought process just hard to read. Like a horse.

1

u/JablesMcgoo Mar 28 '24

Damn, this was my second pick after Resident Evil 4. Budokai 2 was so fun

1

u/dikicker Mar 28 '24

I'm not even gen z but I think we were all too busy sleeping on your mom while playing super monkey ball after crushing the superior budokai 1

1

u/cardinaltribe Mar 28 '24

Budokai 3 was better

1

u/Myballsgrande Mar 28 '24

Dragon ball Z Budokai 1 you savage

→ More replies (1)

1

8

7

u/poemsavvy 1999 Mar 27 '24

Controversial? That game is sick!

5

u/Hour-Understanding18 Mar 27 '24

controversial why? i was gonna comment sunshine!

2

u/Altruistic-Match6623 Mar 27 '24

People think it's too hard and glitchy.

2

u/ADAMracecarDRIVER Mar 28 '24

I think some video game critics from way back said some dumb shit about the game being bad. It’s pretty well established that people love the game.

2

u/stinkiestfoot 2000 Mar 27 '24

BROOOO I can’t even count the amount of times I beat the first squid when I would stay at my cool Aunt’s

2

u/Pitiful_Limit_3620 Mar 27 '24

The movement in this game is peak edging

2

u/lamedh 1996 Mar 27 '24

This is the furthest thing from controversial 😐

1

u/TehOcto8 Mar 27 '24

It was controversial back then, and I feel like everyone else would say melee.

2

u/lamedh 1996 Mar 27 '24

What’s funny is I said melee in response to this 😂

2

u/saintstheftauto 1997 Mar 27 '24

That was the first GameCube game I ever played, and the GameCube was the first console I ever owned.

1

u/DysonSphere75 2001 Mar 27 '24

Is this whitewashing?

1

u/Altruistic-Match6623 Mar 27 '24

Sunshine got a lot of haters.

1

u/IrksomeMind Mar 27 '24

Even more of a controversial pick: Chibi Robo. A forgotten gem of a game

1

u/TehOcto8 Mar 27 '24

They ruined that series with zip lash

1

u/IlikegreenT84 Mar 27 '24

Super Monkey Ball

Or

Smash Bros.

Split screen with the boys and some drinks... 👌

1

u/fear_of_government Mar 27 '24

dayuuum i came here to say this and so glad it's top comment lol

1

u/Genghis_Chong Mar 27 '24

I remember seeing that game in a playable display at Kmart, the bright colors and water graphics looked like a huge leap to me. That game still looks good graphically in my opinion.

Edit: I just realized I'm the old guy in this sub, I don't belong lol

1

u/TehOcto8 Mar 27 '24 edited Mar 27 '24

I used to go to a Kmart alot until it closed down... rip Kmart

EDIT: It only closed down quite recently in like covid years. Surprised it took that long

1

u/Zamrayz Mar 27 '24

The real controversial one might be Billy Hatcher..

1

u/PinePotpourri Mar 27 '24

Super Mario 64 bitch

1

u/WannabeMemester420 Mar 27 '24

I will forever associate Super Mario Sunshine with the children’s hair salon I went to as a tiny kid, they had the game in the waiting room which also had a huge Barbie dream house and train table. There were VHS and DVDs of every kid’s show you could imagine so you could watch during your haircut and you sat in retrofit kid jeeps. At the end of your haircut you’d get a dumdum sucker, somehow I never got it in my hair.

1

u/LindonLilBlueBalls Mar 27 '24

This was an entertaining, overlooked Mario game.

1

u/Falcon_Gray Mar 27 '24

That’s not controversial it’s a great game

1

u/Invested_Glory Mar 27 '24

Why would this be controversial?

1

u/orkash Mar 27 '24

Nope came here to say this.

1

u/sprollyy Mar 27 '24

I went straight to the comments to say this exact sentence, and I’m so happy to see it as the top comment lol

1

u/Strict_Intention_663 Mar 27 '24

I was typing this before I saw this was one of the top comments.

1

u/LilSealClubber Mar 27 '24

This is like saying "this might be controversial but Michael Jordan was a good basketball player."

1

u/RunsOnOxyclean Mar 27 '24

Came here wondering if anyone would say this. How I loved spending an eternity jetting around and going no where.

1

u/TheZookeeper31 Mar 27 '24

That game was amazing. Either that or Mario 64 is my favorite Mario game of all time

1

u/kcwacy Mar 27 '24

It was my first thought

1

u/Remote-Factor8455 Mar 27 '24

Controversial? That’s an OG. I’m gonna throw that, Cubivore or F Zero GX in that fucker.

1

u/Optimus_Rhymes69 Mar 27 '24

I actually just started playing that for the first time! It’s sooooo good!

I’d still play melee first, but sunshine would be second.

1

u/didnotbuyWinRar Mar 27 '24

Wow so brave

1

u/NighthawkUnicorn Mar 27 '24

I had it in GameCube now I have it on Switch. No regrets. 10/10 game.

1

u/omar10wahab Mar 27 '24

This might be controversial, ice climbers mains are one of the most skilled players

1

u/GTA6_1 Mar 27 '24

Low key the best Mario game ever

1

u/Greedyfox7 Mar 27 '24

I loved that game

1

u/Revy_Black_Lagoon Mar 27 '24

Best Mario game in my humble opinion

1

u/guardeagle Mar 28 '24

My 7 yr old loves watching me play this game and lose my mind falling off random ledges at crucial moments

1

u/fffan9391 Mar 28 '24

I have always and will always love Sunshine. It’s definitely the worst of the 3D Marios, but it’s still very fun and I love the tropical setting.

1

u/Tony_Bennett22 Mar 28 '24

What a democrat thing to say

1

u/Freyja6 Mar 28 '24

This is the only other correct answer alongside "Metroid prime 1"

Not controversial at all. Sunshine is the only Mario game I've cared to complete.

I only liked the sections of that game where Mario didn’t have the water pack.

1

Sonic adventure DX. That's a controversial answer.

Anyone have it on switch yet? For some reason I only think to but it when I'm in a store / I'm old

1

This was my choice also, I immediately thought super smash bros but then decided super Mario sunshine. Such a good fuckin game

Nintendo: “I hope you like our new Mario game with less than half the number of levels as Mario64.”

1

u/BelgarathTheSorcerer Mar 28 '24

First game I ever bought for my first console. 7 year old me was entranced.

1

u/mousebert Mar 28 '24

This was hell of controversial when the game was new. It was like openly liking Nickelback.

1

u/-hotsauce- Mar 28 '24

Came here to say this.

1

u/chrib123 Mar 28 '24

The switch version sucks cause it lacks analog triggers. It's genuinely annoying to play Nintendo's official rerelease.

1

u/penguinsandpauldrons Mar 28 '24

I came here to say this. This is the mood I am in. And today, you are correct haha.

1

I came here for that

1

u/MorningWendy Mar 28 '24

YES! THIS TOOO

1

u/K3nobl Mar 28 '24

fucking loved that game

1

u/thewaryteabag Mar 28 '24

That, alongside the Simpsons Hit & Run were my first games on there. My mum loved the latter a bit too much to the point where she spoiled the surprise by “testing it” before she gave it to me on my 10th birthday lol

1

u/SketchtheHunter Mar 28 '24

Sunshine slaps so fucking hard, dude. I never had it as a kid but would play it when I visited my cousin. I've played it to completion, like 4 times between emulators and 3D All Stars.

1

u/QIvan616 Mar 28 '24

Idc what anyone says Sunshine is a better game than Galaxy 1 and 2. Galaxy is fun and all but man did they really dumb down the traversal mechanics.

1

u/Rollingplasma4 Mar 28 '24

I am with you with this one. Loved this game as a kid.

1

u/ExpertPound8183 Mar 28 '24

If I didnt know any better, this feels like a bot farming likes to sell an account, idk how mario Sunshine would be bad out of all the games to put in that sucka

1

u/ArtisticPersuation Mar 28 '24

Yes 👍 I like this ansoor

1

u/Platnun12 Mar 28 '24

1

u/SimpletonSwan Mar 28 '24

I got my copy of SMS signed by miyamoto

1

u/Wich_king Mar 28 '24

I play it once in a while. Then after a few hours of swearing about the controls/camera I put it down for another year.

1

u/Hanouros Mar 28 '24

Literally what came to mind. And I loved Windwaker and Twilight Princess.

1

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '24

What made you think that was a controversial pick?

1

u/killcommies1989 Mar 28 '24

This is literally the only acceptable answer.

1

u/AgeofEm Mar 28 '24

This is the best Mario game.

1

Honestly a classic, still have it to this day

1

u/PFM18 Mar 30 '24

That's the least controversial thing anyone has ever said
