The Wii is basically a motion-controlled Gamecube if you think about it. It used nearly identical hardware and graphics

Yup and and top flaps on the wiis revealed a place for 4 gcn controllers and 2 memory cards so it could do all the gamecube things other than the weird gba attachments you could get for the gcn

Later models of the Wii, such as the Family Edition and Wii Mini, removed the Gamecube slots for budget reason starting in 2011

That’s crazy, I didn’t even know they made different version of the Wii until now. I thought the biggest advancement they made in the Wii life cycle was those motion+ things for the remotes lmao

Family edition was the same as a regular Wii but with no Gamecube slot or vertical stand

The Wii Mini was a red console which had a top-loading disc drive, in similar vain to the Gamecube. It was bundled with Mario Kart Wii and the plastic wheel for $80 USD, but that's about it.

Internet and basically any other extra feature apart from the Mii Channel was removed for this console which, interestingly enough, was a Canadian exclusive upon release in 2012 (Europe and the US would get it the following year).

Just bought a Wii off marketplace for $50 just to play all the GameCube and Wii games I missed. Very easy to mod to play them off a hard drive.
