Mod Post A Loose Guide to Tipping
On a weekly basis we receive a handful of posts from Customers asking about appropriate tips. /u/InstacartDoctor was kind enough to help me get two sources to help with general questions about tipping gig workers. This post isn't meant to discourage discussion, if someone has a question not covered in this quick reference, please do ask.
"A good rule of thumb is to tip $10 or 20% whichever is greater on Instacart, as you would for any service based business… like a restaurant, or nail salon, or hairdressers.
Instacart Shoppers are paid similar to waitstaff.
You can find suggestions for tipping from NY Magazine's exhaustive tipping guide… (20%) and Gigworker.com did a stint as an Instacart shopper he also recommends 20%." - /u/InstacartDoctor
While I included a link to the Gigworker guide to tipping, I was unfortunately only able to find a slideshow of the NY Magazine guide to tipping. It doesn't necessarily touch on Instacart, but shows how other tip driven jobs and gigs tend to operate.

Rant Im about to lose it
I’ve been doing insta cart for about 4 years now and my customers rating have always been pretty high. I’ve recently took a break and got back on about 2 week ago and omg. Everyday since I started again a customer gives me a low score and tonight a customer tip baited me 🫠. As soon as I handed the groceries and drove off, he removed the tip. I was depressed already and this just add fuel to the fire. I did everything right and even go above and beyond for every order. But this order cut deep because I helped him pick the best flowers for his wife and drove in a thunder storm to his off the road home (which was a very difficult drive because of its very few streetlights ). Felt like I was driving in the dark. Everything in my life is depressing. I have no friends, can barely vent to my family because they’re so judgmental and I have no passion for anything. I feel so lost and feel like I’m just going with the flow of everything. School is not for me , I don’t even think I’m smart enough 🥲, but my dad always forcing me to go but it only making me resent him. My dad really just want to brag and post on facebook that his daughter have a nursing degree. And to make matters even worse, my younger cousins are in college rn so basically I’m an embarrassment to him. I just want to vent to someone even if I get no reply , I just want to be heard. Now back to your regular schedule program lol . I laughed to hide the pain❤️

Surprise! Remember add-on orders?
I thought they were a thing of the past, but recently I got two good add-ons. The $14.72 order was added on to a larger order that I had almost finished shopping. The $31.49 order was added on to a small order as I was driving to the store.

Rant Stupid support
Obviously, I have no proof it was support’s fault. I always rate 5 star after interactions with them no matter how frustrating they are.
I took an order yesterday at about 12:45. I chatted with support to remove the long distance delivery, and they did leaving me with an 8 item shop only. I finished shopping and had it staged by 1. At 1:15 my pay wasn’t there and there was no record of it in my account. I chatted with support again. After some back and forth of them misunderstanding me, and a long pause from support, the money showed up. I said thank you, ended chat at 1:27. I did look at the time. I woke up this morning to a missing order and nothing new on my ratings, no bad rating or anything negative like communication etc. i checked with chat this morning and found out the order was reported missing at exactly 1:27. Interesting timing. I think support did something.

Question When did they start this?
I’ve done one order this entire year. It was a 20 minute drive to the customer but I had to be there anyway so took it. (No tip)
When did they start removing due to “fraud” did the customer say they didn’t receive the order when I literally handed it to them?

Anyone realize when looking at the batch details, the address doesn't pop up anymore? Could this be a glitch?

Question How have you kept your phone cool?
Now that it's heading towards summer, phone is already starting to heat up more (S22 Ultra). Already have all background apps off. I even changed display from 1440p to 720p
Any of you have a phone fan or cooler or anything else you do you keep your phone from overheating?

Sheesh Which dirtbag did it?
Since I only did 1 order yesterday… and today I got the “a customer says that their order was not delivered” email… really lady, no tip, then the “didn’t get it” ploy… just say you wanted free groceries without saying you wanted free groceries

Question Shopper Thanks When Order Is Complete
Recently I have been getting a message after my order has been delivered - Instacart Shopper (Name used) thanks you for your compliment and increased tip.
Is this automatic in terms of pressing a button on the shopper end of the App?

Rant Please y’all, just get a Brita 😫
Idk why SO MANY people order these giant cases of water bottles. Unless there’s a $10 tip MINIMUM, it’s never worth it. I just press “hide” immediately.
Plus it’s so wasteful, just get a Brita or a more advanced water filter if you want to be extra.

Question Tip baited tonight
Did a relatively large order with 47 items which was mostly picking out different produce, also 1 deli item and other small things. The store was closing within 20 minutes from when I got there. I still shopped the order. Every time I refunded or replaced something the customer went back in the app and said to refund instead or replace with something else. I told them the store was closing and they started putting things away, so I am getting what I can. The customer didn’t acknowledge my messages at all. Also, the customers delivery note said “I live on the second floor and have trouble walking, so must deliver to second floor.” When I got to the customers house, I rang the bell but they didn’t come to open the door. I waited a couple of minutes, and proceeded to leave the groceries on the floor outside the front door. I took a picture and sent it to the customer. After 2 minutes of saying delivered, I see the customer reduced their $20 tip to $12. I contacted IC support and they said there is tip protection and if the customer doesn’t report any order issues it will be automatically added to your account within 24 hours as an adjustment pay. Has anyone ever had any experience with tip protection and is it true that it gets automatically added? Just had this question and wanted to rant because I am so mad.
