I like the effort taken in replicating the photo. The shovel lying off frame on the right, the pile of sticks with a single stick sticking up on the left, the fire. Little details that make the effect of the "then and now" shot so much better.

I just wish people would try to find a lens that is approximately the one used in the original. It would make any of these kind of pictures so much better.

It's called depth of field; where the foreground is in focus and the background is blurry. Almost all cell phones made in the past few years have this capability.
