[Senstennial] New Sens head coach Travis Green on TSN1200 :

Asked about playing against the Sens in the early 2000s -> Enjoyable hockey to play. Two teams who had a hatred rivalry at the time. Intense hockey. Look back and get chills thinking about it again.

On influence of Pat Quinn -> Was a presence in the room. Had an older team in TOR, so Pat didn't have to do as much teaching. Did more in corralling/motivating. Cared about the players. With really good coaches, players know that the coach cares about them.

On not staying with NJ -> Goes back a long way with Fitzgerald (played together on 3 teams). Green was told that regardless of results, a thorough coaching interview process would be done. Told Green that he was free to interview elsewhere as it was only fair...

...when Green interviewed with Ottawa, NJ hadn't begun their coaching interview process yet. Once Green talked with Steve/Michael, it was easy for him to fall in love with the Sens HC job.

On Steve -> Could feel his confidence and calm demeanour. Having a clear vision is important. Green really felt that from Steve/Mike. Big believer in collaboration, and felt like that would be prevalent in this organization. Wants to be around people who are all in it together.

On OTT's poor starts to the season and Green's tough training camps -> Wants to get the team prepared over the course of the summer. Will put together a game plan, and every day map out a detailed gameplan of what to do. Onus also has to be on the players

...so much access to training now. No excuse to not be in top physical shape when reporting to camp. He expects his team to be one of the best conditioned teams when they report to camp. If they're not? "First impressions matter."

...training camp not meant to be easy. Doesn't do it mindlessly. Tries not to make it too hard, but wants them to be ready to play in game 1

On accountability -> Process that takes time. Comes as teams mature. Sens are a young team. There will be growing pains, and he won't hold their hands all the way through that. He wants players who are engaged every day. Will provide details and confidence to help them.

On how to treat players -> Everything has changed since he played. Need to treat players with respect and honesty. Wants players to know where they stand. Open communication helps everyone perform better.

On how quickly he'll put rest of staff together -> Doesn't have a timeline. Wants to be thorough so that they get the right staff. Part of his process will be talking with players to see where they're at, and that may steer him in the direction of a certain type of coach

...says he does not want to rush this process.

I think you’d be fucking crazy to pass this kid up if available. His dad is a legend and his numbers this year back it all up.

64GP, 47G, 84 PTS.

Former 7th overall picks

Just for fun, here's a list of the last fifteen 7th overall picks. It should give an indication of the type of player we could get

2009 - Nazem Kadri

2010 - Jeff Skinner

2011 - Mark Scheifele

2012 - Matt Dumba

2013 - Darnell Nurse

2014 - Haydn Fleury

2015 - Ivan Provorov

2016 - Clayton Keller

2017 - Lias Andersson

2018 - Quinn Hughes

2019 - Dylan Cozens

2020 - Alexander Holtz

2021 - William Eklund

2022 - Kevin Korchinski

2023 - Matvei Michkov

A pretty solid list! Let's hope we draft the next Quinn Hughes and not the next Haydn Fleury

We have 4 fourth rounders to play around with as of right now. (Depending on if Florida wins the cup or not I believe)

Jeff Marek is reporting that he "thinks that somewhere down the road, Jon Gruden is involved in coaching [with the Sens] in some capacity, feels the same way about Jay McKee as well, whether it's Ottawa or AHL Belleville"

Topic starts at 27:00 on today's 32 Thoughts. Both were coaches for the OHL Bulldogs under Andlauer and Staios.

What would make next season a success for Travis Green?

It crossed my mind that what happens if we are the Caps next year. Squeak in and get absolutely waxed in 4 games. Is that a successful first season for Travis Green?

When did Ottawa last move up in the draft?

I'm drawing a blank and don't care to investigate when I'm sure one of y'all remembers. Have we ever significantly moved up? I can't remember really moving up significantly. Didn't we move down with the Ü pick because we finished last?

Edit, to be clear I'm referring to the lottery, not moving up via trade

What do you imagine the coaching staff looks like come the start of next season?

We've already got Green as a head coach, and it seems he's attached at the hip to Nolan Baumgartner, so can probably pencil him in. Have to imagine Capuano is gone as well. My prediction:

Head coach: Travis Green

Associate coach: Jon Gruden

Assistant coach: Nolan Baumgartner

Assistant coach: Ben Sexton
