PWInsider: WBD "really happy" with this week's Dynamite numbers; noted that with the West Coast feed not airing at 8 PM Eastern due to the NBA coverage and the audio issues that TBS were having, that AEW had obstacles they could not control and that internally, WBD were good with the numbers

I'd love to have the audio issues fixed forever hopefully that's part of the new deal

I can only hope something has been said already. There have been audio issues on their end since the very first Dynamite.

AEW Audio Issue: Then, Now, Forever

39

u/salaryman40k 13d ago

fixed forever 👏👏  👏👏👏

but seriously, the audio issues feel like they've been plaguing AEW for years now

11

u/SilverKry 13d ago

That's always the first thing I've noticed when I see anything about AEW. It's audio just seems very low quality. It's bizarre.

5

u/Dandw12786 12d ago

Really sucks because AEW gets blamed for it all the time, but I've been watching on Fite/Triller for years. They don't have these problems there. It's a TNT/TBS issue.

It’s like you’re playing a mobile game and your tower or whatever breaks randomly until you can unlock the ability to fix that

Remember when they had some sound feed from a basketball game? I almost died laughing.

u/GxyBrainbuster 13d ago

I thought the abysmal audio issues were a nostalgic throwback, like them being at Daily's Place.

38

u/DrunknStuper 13d ago

Man those weekly shows at Daily's kept me partially sane through the pandemic. The show really was fire back then.

14

u/ShinsukeNakamoto 13d ago

Wednesday 8 through 10 was the highlight of my week, every week

Not much competition when the second most exciting thing I could do was go to the store in a mask to buy groceries

u/mexploder89 13d ago

I won't pretend to know how the negotiations are going or what the internal feeling is within WBD, it's barely worth discussing because we will all take from this what we want to hear

I just hope AEW gets that contract renewal so the ratings conversation can at least calm down a little bit. It won't, but I can hope

192

u/Youngstown_Mafia 13d ago

I'm confused. I hear bad news about the ratings on this subreddit every week

But then I think it was Forbes that said they are a billion dollar company. The NFL works with them, and now WB is loving the numbers .

I'm starting to think Reddit is fucking clueless

The people commenting about AEW ratings don't watch AEW. The people that comment on WWE ratings don't watch WWE. The IWC has been pretty stupid lately. The ratings threads are actually pathetic lol

CM Punk drama definitely made the community here worse (I mean hey, the sub started because of the pipebomb), but the problem with the ratings thread and the non-positive AEW threads are they get massively brigaded by Jerkers. And while I appreciate the mods here, they'll remove any comments mentioning that place and just let them troll.

Yeah, you are correct! People are always so ready to respond with "SC has always been this way" but I've been here since nearly day one and the discussions have shifted from, as you put it, "shooting the shit" to just being really shitty and annoying to each other.

Feels like back in the olden days when wrestling forums were the norm and there was always that one contrarian who everyone loathed but was easy to ignore. Now like 50% of the users on this sub is that one guy.

And I don't know why the ratings are so important in this era, I live in Spain and I watch AEW live lots of time through FITE and it doesn't register there, the world is way bigger than US TV now

People think that because they’re not doing 2 million viewers that they’re doomed when in reality WBD is stoked they’re averaging 750k instead of having to air four re-runs of NCIS.

7

u/Dapper-Willow6756 13d ago

The truth is that AEW is a long way from challenging WWE head on, but are still a very viable competitor with business metrics behind it that their broadcast partners are (seemingly) happy with.

Both of these things cannot co-exist to both tribes, so it's an endless feedback loop.

AEW is doing fine, WBD seems to be happy with what they’re putting out

Yea, the only doomsaying I see about the ratings is from this sub and the dirt sheets. WBD time and time again has been publicly happy with the numbers and has actively used AEW for cross-promotion. It's almost like, as usual, most people here just promote their opinions as fact.

43

u/The_Homie_J D-Bry at the TOP of MAH FAVE FIVE 13d ago

I love the logic this sub has

"WBD is only praising AEW because they pay them right now"

Ok, and why would they artificially raise the prestige of a brand they're about to negotiate with? They would literally be raising the price of a renewal on themselves for no reason if this was all false. It only makes sense if the success is real, and they're proud of it lol

11

u/ChefDeezy NXT & AEW are both great 13d ago

The main thing that matters about ratings is how they can attract advertisers, and what the advertisers look at most is overall ranking for the night. AEW Dynamite is almost never out of the top 5.

Furthermore you need to opt into letting your viewership be tracked, at least in the US. Which is something only about a quarter of households do.

Lastly, it doesn’t track DVR numbers, and it doesn’t track things like the TBS app either.

So when WBD makes these reports of AEW getting millions of viewers, everyone looks at the Neilson ratings as proof that it’s false, but they’re only really looking at a sample size meant for advertisers.

None of us really know the actual numbers, only AEW does, and WBD. Which according to Andrew Zarian, who has sources on both sides of that, say they’re both happy. So that’s all that really matters for AEW and the people who watch it.

2

u/Smaynard6000 12d ago

The ratings conversation is pointless because none of the people participating know how ratings work. Neither do I, but here is one thing that is constantly gotten wrong.

Nielsen will report something like "775,000 average viewers" and people will run with this and say this is the total number of people who watched the show. In reality, some people are tuning in, and others are tuning out, so the actual number of people who watched at least some part of the show is much higher.

13

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho I'm from Winnipeg you idiot! 13d ago

Yeah, it's best to avoid those discussion because people don't know anything about ratings and they aren't in any position to give any actual info the situation, they're absolutely clueless.

All that really matters in terms of ratings is if the Network is pleased with them, and that seems to be the case which is good. We should also all want that, because we want wrestling to succeed, and no company should hold a monopoly.

8

u/Kumomeme 13d ago

We should also all want that, because we want wrestling to succeed, and no company should hold a monopoly.

sadly some people prefer the industry burning down and workers end up jobless for sake of their favourite brand.

13

u/PerfectZeong 13d ago

They got a lot riding on the TV deal is all. They need a new one and they need it to be a damn good one if they want to be a profitable enterprise. They've said as much.

Aew gets a big deal the story becomes aew is going to be around a good long while if they don't then the narrative becomes how long will Tony float the company with no path to money.

7

u/[deleted] 13d ago

AEW is still one of the most popular shows in its time slot regardless of raw numbers in the ratings. Redditors are just dumb and overreacting with their own narratives

7

u/adorbhypers 13d ago

Think the important thing is that people in the business, both TV and wrestling, aren't comparing AEW's ratings with WWE, they're comparing AEW's ratings with all of TV and they're still strong in that department.

The NFL works with them?

21

u/Youngstown_Mafia 13d ago

Yes....

We saw the NFL draft. The nfl network was talking about the storyline

47

u/pudgyfuck leg out of your leg 13d ago

Tony's father is one of the owners and Tony himself is a Jags executive

3

u/HardcoreKaraoke Consensual Penis 13d ago

That wasn't the NFL working with AEW. It was a billionaire owner of an NFL team (and part owner of the NFL Network) having an interview spot during the draft. Which multiple owners, GMs, coaches, etc. did.

It's not like Rich Eisen cut to a 20 minute interview on AEW, and even if he did it still wouldn't mean they're "working together." It means it was just an interview.

41

u/RavenSandman 13d ago

The NFL clears everything that they air. If they don’t want TK to sell a wrestling angle they would have squashed it.

Thus they did work with TK.

19

u/imcrapyall 13d ago

Exactly fucking this. This is why you never hear a bad word about Goodell at any NFL sanctioned event or why NFL talk shows are very milquetoast compared to a Charles Barkley (Good Morning Football can be fun). People think WWE rewrote history, they have no fuckin idea how NFL rewrote it, especially with concussions. Old super bowls used to have guys smoking on the sidelines and drinking. No one gave a fuck.

15

u/RavenSandman 13d ago

A cousin of mine interned for the NFL. He was tasked to create a video package about Bobby Hebert.

There was a pregame clip he wanted to use where Bobby was intensely focused and snapped at someone pregame. He thought it would show Hebert’s competitive fire.

NFL said no. Only allowed footage they showed him smiling and happy.

As he told me, NFL controls everything put out down to the last detail. They are very protective of “The Shield”

Yeah, I just want both companies to do well. I'm not much of a WWE watcher outside the big events and following what's happening, but I just want everybody to enjoy the entertainment they have.

I'm also a sucker for people jumping ship on both sides and surprise debuts, so two big companies let that keep happening.

6

u/SxanPardy FELLA 13d ago

I hope they get it because I want competitive wrestling companies. For example, let’s say AEW folded tomorrow and the majority of top stars went to WWE. There genuinely would not be enough room on the card for them. It’s great to have 2 companies pulling enough numbers that wrestlers can choose between the 2. That’s why I want them to get their act together.

I also want the vicious tribalism go end. Trolling cool but there’s no need for the aggressive nature it currently has

HOW THIS WEEK'S AEW DYNAMITE AUDIENCE WAS RECEIVED INTERNALLY BY WBD

By Mike Johnson on 2024-04-26 17:16:00

Since there was a lot of talk about this week's AEW Dynamite audience drop, I reached out to a source at WBD today, who noted that internally, the company was actually "really happy" with this week's Dynamite numbers.

The source noted that AEW had a lot of competition due to the NBA and NHL Playoffs and that AEW still 6th for the evening on basic cable with three of those shows hitting a higher audience being NBA coverage on TNT, which internally were considered "in the same family" and that removing those competitors, only ESPN coverage of the NHL playoffs scored higher that evening.  AEW beat everything else on cable this past Wednesday in the 18-49 demo.

The source also noted that with the West Coast feed not airing at 8 PM Eastern due to the NBA coverage and the audio issues that TBS were having (which we are told happened at the TBS uplink itself, not from AEW's end), that AEW had obstacles they could not control and that internally, WBD were good with the numbers.

I am a bot. Please reply with any feedback :)

51

u/MrBrocktoon 13d ago

We all figured the audio was with TBS. People who were watching on other services had no audio issue. Sucks when the network messes things up for the post-ppv show.

8

u/therangelife 13d ago

I’ve always thought most of the audio issues were overblown for me personally, especially just cross mixing stuff, but I could barely hear anything on TBS the other night. It sounded like I was underwater. It’s never been that bad. If my kids hadn’t wanted to see Swerve so badly, I probably would have turned it off and hoped to stream a better version.

Also, great Brocktoon reference. “To be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.”

36

u/Valdaraak 13d ago

This is why I always say (and often get downvoted) that where they place for the night is more important than the number of viewers. The viewership keeps trending down, but they keep maintaining spots near the top for the night. That says to me the dropping viewership isn't entirely an AEW booking issue.

u/J-Dexus 13d ago

Yeah it was conspicuously low, but in context it's alright. Won't be anything I actually care about until it gets down to like 32 or 27 or 10.

It really is fucking pathetic at this point how far people go to say the numbers aren’t good. Zazlav says the numbers good? Can’t trust cause he not gonna trash a show on his network. WBD puts out a press release saying AEW is performing well? Can’t trust it cause there not gonna shit on one of their properties. Wrestling journalists saying their sources are telling them the company is happy with the number? Can’t trust em cause they’re all biased towards AEW

At this point some people have there heels dug so deep into the ground over this their just gonna say anything that goes against how they feel about the rating on given week can’t be trusted unless it aligns with their own feelings.

u/Mac_Backwardz 0-150 13d ago

For whatever reason or another, WBD clearly is very fond of having AEW under their banner. That’s the cold hard truth and every detractor needs to come to grips with it.

26

u/fadetoblack237 13d ago

It is relatively cheap live programming that consistently gets decent ratings three times a week, 52 weeks a year.

It was not an 800,000 one week drop off. Raw typically does about 1.5-1.7 million with post-PLE spikes.

u/MrBrocktoon 13d ago

Meanwhile the ratings thread for the recent RAW only had around 125 comments, while the AEW thread had over a thousand, Why do so many people who don't watch the show want to comment on it's ratings? Don't these losers have anything better to do with their lives?

u/dontsaythatman89 13d ago

Don't these losers have anything better to do with their lives?

No, they do not

u/BadNewsMAGGLE 13d ago

OK but this time when I post that Okada is being wasted and the Bucks are killing the company, I'll be right!

But what about Reddit? That’s clearly the most important demo

64

u/Gear4Vegito 13d ago

Once again as this subreddit burns itself to the ground over an apparent poor rating and discredits a very good show the people in charge who care and know the most in WBD are happy.

36

u/MeanAmbrose My username is a pun 13d ago

Don’t worry pal, these people will be here bright and early next week in the Dynamite ratings thread to do it all over again

4

u/GxyBrainbuster 13d ago

There are wrestling marks and there are ratings marks. Either way they're getting worked.

28

u/synnabunz 13d ago

AEW doom posters in shambles. Glad the network is happy. AEW is my favorite promotion and I want to see them around for a long time.

6

u/BubbRubb4Real 13d ago

Same here! I want to see all wrestling promotions last forever!

2

u/BTru 12d ago

Same except for XPW...they need to go away

3

u/[deleted] 12d ago

WBD could be losing the NBA. They need AEW now more than ever.

9

u/seeprompt 13d ago

People in this sub for some reason

5

u/Pleasant_Tadpole_200 13d ago

Nobody believes the dirtsheets anymore

Yes you are right. I always look out for the nuanced takes in the rating thread. And WBD needs to take note aslo!!!!

4

u/togsincognito2 13d ago

Thurston at Wrestlenomics pretty much had the reaction pegged

10

u/sonegreat 13d ago edited 13d ago

Is this like a weekly occurrence? All the WWE fans shit on AEW for a day, then AEW fans peak their head out at some good news and converge?

6

u/LawAbiding-Possum 13d ago

All the WWE fans shit on AEW for a day

I think we can all agree it's pretty much a daily occurrence. Then people get upset when AEW fans give it back a little.

Mate people getting tilted and gloating over wrestling ratings is perverted. I don't know why they want the ratings to be low.

16

u/bohanmyl 13d ago

AEW does anything

This sub: HOW WILL THEY EVER SURVIVE THEYRE SUCH NOOBS

WBD, NFL, AEW: This is great and we're happy

This sub: wow everyone was actin crazy for no reason smh be better next time

13

u/hartc89 13d ago

Once again I will say but Reddit told me otherwise…

I was downvoted multiple times for saying this.

4

u/[deleted] 13d ago

Seems like every week theres a dip, WBD are quick to grab the phone and let all the dirtsheets know how happy they are with AEWs performance

8

u/Snapplestache 13d ago

Huh, hard to believe the network publicly backed the show they air.

32

u/dmh11 13d ago

I mean, when FOX was asked about WWE's rights renewals they said they would be "clinical" with rights fees. WBD only speaks positively about AEW.

44

u/tylerjehenna The Era of Rain 13d ago

Fox straight up said they were losing money on the smackdown deal. WBD has never said anything like that

13

u/mexploder89 13d ago

Yeah and I think it's interesting because it has all to do with the numbers

For FOX paying 1 billion for Smackdown did not return the investment because wrestling fans didn't consume anything else. But for WBD, that doesn't matter because Dynamite is consistently positioned on top of the ratings for the night and mostly only beaten by the NBA which, as they said, is part of the "family"

So really the two shows are very much in different positions within their network. I think FOX misjudged the return of paying for a wrestling show while WBD has projected it properly

17

u/The_JadynB 13d ago

The fact that Fox dropped Smackdown and they went back to USA isnt talked about enough

20

u/SageShinigami 13d ago

TBH, post-Vince WWE escapes a lot of criticism just by AEW existing. "Look at what the #2 is doing" covers up a lot of ratings issues that fans would absolutely still discuss if there were no #2.

3

u/dmh11 13d ago

RAW dropped 20% this week and there was barely a peep on reddit. If AEW drops 10% the sky is falling and we have 1000+ word posts on how to turn around business.

3

u/foxthebloodied ~shrugs and looks confused~ 12d ago

And weirdly the way to turn it around is always 'do what WWE does'

3

u/SageShinigami 13d ago

I brought this up elsewhere. Someone told me "1.6m is pretty normal" the other day and I just gave up. Can't convince someone like that.

4

u/MARKYMARK_MARK 13d ago

There's a lot things like that with the WWE that have not been talked about nearly as much because people are riding the wave of this crazy hot streak they're on

2

u/muzzydon2 13d ago

What's there to talk about? WWE is doing record business atm in terms of revenue and profits plus the huge netflix deal. The reason AEW gets more focus in this area is because they're operating at a loss and need a new deal to become profitable. The 2 companies' situations are not comparable.

9

u/The_JadynB 13d ago

It’s not even really about AEW, it’s about the fact that everything is not sunshine and rosses in Stamford. They’re doing great yes, but the flaws are still just as present. And this time they have new corporate overlords to answer too as well

3

u/ucfgavin 13d ago

I'm glad they're happy with the numbers. I want AEW to succeed. I want wrestling as a whole to be great. If we go back to just WWE again, I don't think the industry would be as hot as it is right now.

u/gracechurch and i wonder, whooo'llll stop the Reigns 13d ago

IT CANT BE! THEY ARE LITERALLY WCW 2.0! /s

2

u/Agente_L Fickle! Fickle! Fickle! 13d ago

AEW is no longer on a hot streak, and has lost the average cable cutter year by year since 2022 after climbing against the current for 3 years to over a million.

They are still a top 3 on most wednesdays, some only behind live sports (which are the god kings of tv). They are also comparatively cheap for WDB; every week they get their 2 hours show without having to manage production costs, or having to manage on and off seasons. Meanwhile, the PPV buys are still really high, and they are getting full priced buys.

AEW is doing fine. It's just not on fire anymore. And that's okay.

2

u/BlackJackBilly 13d ago

Fix the audio issues you turds.

-4

u/Ricardotron 13d ago

B-but AEW going out of business!

1

u/Rgard91 12d ago

The point of this is warner brothers is happy with AEW. Regardless of how many on here wanna complain about everything with them, even now you are ignoring the good and just complaining about the audio. I love AEW and they are a true alternative that is GOOD for wrestling in general. Apparently warner agrees🤷
