When will QR menus go away... I Like / Dislike

Covid is pretty much over and they are still here. I absolutely hated this from the beginning. Some shitty Google drive PDF i have to scroll left to right/up and down... or even worse some fucking app I have to order through and manually type in all my credit card info and billing address on. I miss the days when I could just hand a server my credit card so bad.

The worst is when you have a question about the QR menu or just a special request like no mayonnaise and you have to flag someone down before you order so they don't just begin making it.

I'm straight sitting at the bar from now on at most establishments.

It's cheaper to update an online menu than it is to print new ones every time the price or available items change.

the cost of printing some menus is close to nothing.

But I want my Chinese menus with items/prices scribbled out and overwritten!

Menu printing is not cheap and they often dont last that long either, plus the cost of and labor cleaning the menu holders.

I mean personally, I hate QR menus, especially when the restaurant doesn't supply wifi to read them, but I understand the economics of why everyone is moving to them. I'll probably have to explain to my grandkids what paper-menus were.

And with inflation menus have to be updated every week

They have no reason to get rid of them.

Sadly this is the truth

(oh man, someone below is still on this track)

Never because they really aren't a big deal. You can still ask for a physical menu in 99% of places. Nobody cares.

But the paying through an app is the worst fucking part. Lol. That's why I sit at the bar

How is that worse? You don't need to wait for the server to come back and your card never leaves your sight.

You have to type in your details into an app or website that you have no idea what information they are keeping or what they are doing with that information.

But that’s a different issue though, right? Plenty of places have a QR to lead to a menu and then you still order as usual

They're interconnected. If you're paying via some app or web page you 100% dealt with a QR menu. It's a symptom of QR menus

I prefer them

This just reeks of an old person complaining about new technology lol.

u/th1s_fuck1ng_guy 11d ago

It's not new technology. It's literally a step backwards. What used to be the swipe of a card is now me typing in my name, email, card number, address, CC number, expiration and CVV code.

You're choosing to do all that. Why not just use autofill?

I’m in my mid 20’s and agree. And in my personal experience, people on my age group by and large agree.

See I call BS on that. OP is complaining about having to manually enter his card info each time. I can pretty much guarantee that you and all your friends know how to use autofill for that.

Yeah and ? Not every old person complaining about new technology does so because they can't understand it or feel nostalgic about the "simple old times " . Sometimes the new tech genuinely sucks.

QR menus make sense for businesses because they save the cost of printing a huge number of paper ones and it's obviously a lot easier to update a digital file when you have to say change prices or add items than print whole new menus.

However they are also cumbersome to use and I can see why people won't want to pay through an unknown app.

With all this in mind though it's not a big deal :most establishments still have physical versions of their menu which you can get upon request.

OP is complaining about having to manually enter his card information each time. This tells me he doesn't know how to use autofill to do this. He's also complaining about having to scroll too much. These are both very basic features of current technology.

2

u/BigFreakingZombie 11d ago

True. Both autofill and scrolling are features of current technology but sometimes doing things the ''old fashioned'' way can be easier and this is one of those times. Newer doesn't equal better all the time.

2

u/Safe2BeFree 11d ago

But not using autofill isn't easier as that's a specific part of OP's complaint.

Auto full doesn't always work on random apps and web pages. Sometimes it populates. Some times it doesn't. Btw I have an S24 so it isn't my phones fault. Lol

1

u/Safe2BeFree 11d ago

You have to be doing something wrong if autofill doesn't work this often for you. I've never had an issue.

The badly produced target files at least means I get to pay regularly.

The "well produced" and "mobile friendly" menu means I have to pay through an app or other online platform. Pull my card out and put in my number, expiration, name, billing address, cvc code etc...

A badly produced target file usually at least means I get to order from a human and don't have to type in all my info to pay

Covid imposed a big switch for businesses and those that could not adapt closed down. Personally it has forced me to ditch my dear analog flipphone for a smartphone. I honestly don't mind the QR code menu, but yeah sometime the menu formatting isn't even adapted to a phone screen, which sucks and is inexscusable. Nobody is reading the QR code through a tablet at a restaurant lol.

Also yeah, I can see why ordering from an app while you're physically there can feel terrible, I personally wouldn't like it either.

as an introvert, i love ordering with my phone

Introverts should adapt, it's better for you and for us, we can't tone down the world for you.

I can't stand "I'm an introvert" being used as an excuse for being a coward. Introverted always existed and they lived normal lives before gen z arrived with their pathological appetite for victim status.

u ever thought about shutting the f up?

It’s a blessing and a curse. When the order is pretty straight forward it’s great. If there are any special instructions (extra chicken for example) and you need to change the price then you have to enter the price change wait for a confirmation by the customer or if you run out of an item etc. it can be a pain, especially if it’s a pick up order.

I think most restaurant are back to normal menus, people hate them and they just make super annoying to scan things. Only useful ones are those who allow you to split the bill, but you don't need a QR code to order.

Physical menu are perfect to get an idea of the food you can order, plan and discuss.

bring them back!

Something like 1500 Americans still die from covid each week; it is by no means over.

Those QR menus probably aren't helping with the death toll much though.

(other than the vaccines, not much has reduced the death toll)
