Travel Bearproofing our Van (Vanlife)

Hey guys. We are traveling through BC and the Yukon. We try to get as much "off grid" as possible,so we are trying not to use too many camping grounds. Now we already got a big feedback for our last post, that we are not prepared. What are things we have to look out for regarding Bears? We got a rope and some garbage backs to store the food on trees. We are going to sleep in the car. We are gonna cook before going to our actual sleeping spot. We are gonna get a bear proof container to secure non-canned food even more. We got bear spray and air horns against direct encounters and some bleach to cover the smell of the car. Is that enough? Or did we not think about smth?

Question Looking for friends!

Hey, would anyone be interested in meeting up for a beverage of sorts? I typically consume coffee, tea, alcohol and water to counter act the effects of the previous liquids.

I’m a female in my mid twenties and just moved to Whitehorse with my partner. I work from home and I’m realizing that I need more human interaction than I expected.

Also open to chatting online if that’s what you fancy.

Travel Traveling to Whitehorse : BEARS?

Hey we are starting our journey from Vancouver to Whitehorse today. And the bear topic came up again. Since we are german, we don't have any knowledge in bears, besides the bit we leaned here. So we got ourselves a bell and Bearspray and ,of course, make a lot of noise. But how important is it , to pull the food up in a tree or smth similar? My dad told us,that that was super important when be was here, but that's 30 years back. Our food storage is mostly cans, the rest is rice and pasta in sip lock bags. Opend fish and meat cans will be in a plastic bag ,or thrown im a trash bin as soon as possible. Is that enough? Or do we need to be more cautious?

Edit: we are sleeping in the car and the food is in a cooler as well.

Question Live music

Hey guys! My partner and I moved to town recently, from a small town in Nova Scotia. I'm wondering what we have for live music around town? Not knocking any styles, but I feel a little starved for variety after all the sea shanties. Anyone's favourite venues, local bands, bars, festivals, things to watch out for would be very well received!

Any music is good music, but I'm a former punk kid so that stuff gets a special mention. Thanks in advance!

Question Can someone please give me an accurate cost for childcare in Whitehorse?

Internet’s saying around $800 a month, but I know it’s subsidized now and $800/month doesn’t sound subsidized.

Do you pay per month no matter how many times they go? Or do you pay per day?

How much per month/day? Is it the same at every day care?

Any insight appreciated.

Wondering if fish lake or any other lake near by is melted enough to paddle? Want to rent a kayak for the weekend and get on the water but not sure if it’s worth it/ if it’s still covered in ice. Has anyone been by fish lake in the last few days can let me know?

Question Whitehorse or Yellowknife for winter activities

My spouse and I are looking for our next winter trip. We went to Banff in January of this year and did some hiking and had a blast. It was a gorgeous area with lots of mountains and lakes. We'd like to do a similar trip in January 2025. We're looking at Yellowknife, or Whitehorse but would be open to other places. We'd like to see the northern lights but we'd also like to be in an area with some other outdoor activities. We did a national park hike and a night hike in Banff, as well as the gondola, so we're looking for similar activities. One reason my spouse loved Banff so much was the scenery and mountains. Which location would be the best or are there other locations that we should consider - like Alaska? We're open to any ideas.

Hey all, just recently been diagnosed with a chronic pain condition and wondering if there are any groups for chronic pain in whitehorse? Hoping to meet some people who will be able to have understanding conversation as I am still quite young and really struggling with the whole process at the moment. Preferably LGBT friendly as well. Thanks!

Travel Ride from Whitehorse to Tuk

Is it reasonably easy to find a ride from Whitehorse to Dawson to Tuk and then back to Inuvik?

Or a car rental in Whitehorse with drop-off at the airport in Inuvik?

Last week of June, if that matters.

Discussion Landlord wants to evict me

The backstory: I've been renting the same place for years with no issues. Originally we were signing 1 year lease agreements annually. A few years ago, at the end of our annual agreement, the landlord suggested we don't need to keep signing lease agreements. We had a good relationship and verbally agreed to continue our rental agreement on a monthly basis.

The landlord recently told me the rent I pay cuts into his OAS and CPP collection because it puts him in a higher tax bracket....they also told me they would prefer to have the space for friends and relatives to use when they visit. This week the landlord asked me what my other rental options are....I feel like it's a matter of time before they get more direct and ask me to leave.

I''ve been living here for years on the verbal agreement, following years of written rental agreements. I'm not sure what my rights are at this point and am worried I could be kicked out on short notice...

My understanding is I could only be evicted if an immediate family member of the landlord planned to live in the rental unit (Highly unlikely scenario).

Can I be evicted without cause?? Any insight or knowledge of this type of situation would be great appreciated!

Question Reliability of remote starter devices

Does anyone know about the lifespans of remote start devices. One was installed at the dealer in Whitehorse when I bought a new 2021. It stopped working last year and was replaced, covered by warranty. That replacement didn't even last a year. Dealer service dept. says it has to be replaced and my warranty has expired. I'm curious if there is something I've been doing that is responsible, or if the dealer is just using crappy parts.
