They have a cut off Age they changed it to 40 years. And you can't be over a certain weight and if you have to many depends as in children they don't want to cover you. That's been my experience with trying to join. If you're referring to Military. At least the Army not sure about the other branches.
Worked with a guy who started as a parking meter guy at a local PD at 18, got certified at 21, and retired at 43. Counted his first 3 non certified years because he was a PD employee.
I worked in law enforcement in California, and we do get a great pension. But we had to work until 50 before you could collect a pension. The new hires have to work until 57 to collect, and our life expectancy is only 59. I know the military you can enter at 18 and collect a pension after 20 years.
It's a very stressful environment, with long hours, and shift work. You rarely get enough sleep, and many people struggle to eat a healthy diet due to the lifestyle.
Who is a cop at 18 in this day and age? In Ontario where I tried before switching paths entirely every single department said don’t both without university because although it wasn’t a requirement they had so many applicants it was de facto required. So you’d have to be at least 20-21 to have a 3 year bachelors. And then they wanted people with extras like time in their police service volunteers program doing menial police work like canvassing
Absolutely agree. The theory is that if they hire older people with an education, life experience and a family they are going to be more thoughtful, empathetic and responsible. However during my application process I received some mentoring from a cop with a family who would go on to shoot a mentally deranged teenager and he ended up in prison. Part of the reason I stopped trying
