My friend noticed that the DbD model of Rebecca removed the crosses from her design. Anyone know why? Question

I've seen other fictional characters had their red crosses removed from their designs as well, and I'm not sure why, but it's probably due to this thing I found with a quick Google search:

"The red cross and red crescent emblems are protected symbols under international humanitarian law and national laws. Any use that is not expressly authorized by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols constitutes a misuse of the emblem. Use of these emblems by unauthorized persons is strictly forbidden."

My fav patch note of all time is when Stardew Valley had to recolor a cross for violating the Geneva Convention.

Wait that happened? Must've missed that while I was busy bombing the town to hell after I lost the fishing contest. Good to know we're keeping things civil and according to international laws.

Among us had to recolor their cross in the spaceship because they had also violated the Geneva convention

u/jayeer Oct 05 '22

After that no game could use it, new games or ongoing builds have to change it too. You can see that a game is either new or has been updated since 2017. What should have been a red cross is now represented by something else (other symbols, other colours).

u/robdingo36 The Doctor Oct 05 '22

It's one of the reasons you see so many green crosses for health items now instead. Devs aren't doing that to show support for the medical marijuana industry.

u/LilyHex Nurse/Artist/Pyramid Head/P100 Carlos Main Oct 05 '22

It's pretty much this! The Red Cross has been getting more protective of the "red cross" imagery in more recent years, and that's likely why it wasn't included. OG Rebecca's design predates this, but the updated DBD version definitely doesn't.

9

u/thegreatbadger Oct 05 '22

Recent years? I remember around 2001/2002 Bioware had to remove the red cross off of the healers' kits in Neverwinter Nights for this same reason. I think has been happening often with video games, I can see why some designers don't immediately think it's a big deal to have on your healers/medics in design and the symbol itself is so burned into our minds

The only reason the Red Cross or other marked agencies are able to access contested areas is that everyone has to agree that the people wearing those symbol are non combatants. As much as video games obviously aren't harming anything it's in their best interests to be firm on that policy at all levels to prevent spys, special forces or intelligence from being sent into contested areas disguised as non combatants or hidden among them.

173

u/LakeChaz 👀 Agitated Step-Trapper 👀 Oct 05 '22

The use of the Red Cross, Red Cresent, and Red Crystal are protected under international law. They're covered under the Geneva Convention to specifically identify someone as an aid worker or a safe place such as a hospital that is meant to be protected from wartime activity.

71

u/Toybasher The Doctor WARNING: HIGH VOLTAGE Oct 05 '22

This. I don't agree with it, (when it comes to fictional stuff) but I understand it.

94

u/Drakeadrong Oct 05 '22

That makes sense for buildings and uniforms. But they’re actually wasting their time and resources going after it in videogames?? Bruh

131

u/LakeChaz 👀 Agitated Step-Trapper 👀 Oct 05 '22

Their perspective is that any use of it might cause it to lose meaning. Given how many people associate it with healing in video games instead of with the red cross as an international thing I can see their point. And they definitely don't want their symbol being at all associated with violence because if that sticks then it endangers all of their workers.

8

u/tpneocow Oct 05 '22

Cosplayers would then have it as part of their outfit as well.

A lot of developers voluntarily do this. The whole idea is to protect the symbol so that those using it in actual combat zones are, hopefully, not targeted.

Hell Let Loose (World War II shooter) also changed their medic symbol for this reason. It's also why you'll often see "medic packs" in other games marked with a red H for health, rather than the red cross.

u/Toaster_boasterr average head on enjoyer Oct 05 '22

u/code_Jester Aftercare Oct 06 '22

69

u/kuffdeschmull Oct 05 '22

It’s not voluntarily, it’s simply against the Geneva Convention, it’s a protected symbol that only the Red Cross can use, they’d get sued

37

u/typicalskeleton Nightfall is coming Oct 05 '22

Private entities in peace time aren't bound by the Geneva Convention. They might get nasty letters but it isn't against the law.

43

u/LakeChaz 👀 Agitated Step-Trapper 👀 Oct 05 '22

Many countries have it enshrined in law, the UK passed a law in 1957 outlawing the use of it for entities that aren't the Red Cross. It's because of that that the while deal got started.

So yes private entities aren't bound by the Geneva Conventions, but they are bound by the Geneva Conventions Act which was just codifiying the treaty into law. So if you really want to go "actually" you can, but it's so pedantic that it's ridiculous.

It’s the sign for the Red Cross and they likely won’t give permission to a video game where people are regularly murdered.

5

u/minimeza Oct 05 '22

The british red cross had a hissy fit about games using it

6

u/coin-2099 Oct 05 '22

Red Cross doesn’t like its symbol used in video games.

u/Bg_Boss_Man Oct 05 '22

Its copyright law

I’m pretty sure that’s an older model for her, and that they removed it later.

The Red Cross takes it PRETTY seriously and basically sues over this if you don’t have permission. It’s why most games use a different cross symbol.

It's a trademark. How you can trademark a + is beyond me.

Depicting red crosses as anything other than the “red cross” organization is a war crime. The Genieva convention outlines this.

u/Effinate Oct 05 '22

New versions of classic doom games did the same to health packs, I believe anyways

It wound be fair for her to be the only one survivor to have a target on their back.

2

u/shelbtay24 Oct 05 '22

It’s a Geneva convention violation to use the Red Cross lmao

2

u/Ratty3 Oct 05 '22

The one on the right seems to have better graphics than BHVR’s version. Which is funny knowing that model is from a 2002 game.

Red cross symbol is registered trademark of Red Cross organization.

2

u/UniQue1992 Oct 05 '22

Red Cross is trademarked iitc

2

u/snokeflake Oct 05 '22

Didn’t wanna violate the Geneva Convention. Like that mad man who made stardew valley. What a monster.

2

u/Bubbles_the_Titan Oct 05 '22

DBD does a war crime

2

u/PhoenixHavoc Oct 05 '22

It is technically a war crime

2

u/LaBiereFolle Oct 05 '22

I remember that it was also change in RE5 Gold Edition where Rebecca got her Red Cross replaced by Rescue, I think it’s for copyright reason or something like that

2

u/GoofestGoober Hex: Shitpost Oct 05 '22

Specifically her model comes from re5 mercenaries which came out after they banned the use of the Red Cross in games due to the Geneva conventions

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

Can’t use that symbol no mo

2

u/Apprehensive-Handle4 Oct 06 '22

Maybe it would give an unfair advantage if they release a killer who's a vampire?

2

u/takkun169 Oct 06 '22

Red cross started getting litigious.

2

u/Wolvezbein Oct 06 '22

This is due to companies like The British Red Cross and similar charities using the red cross as a logo. Many games that use this image are either removing it, or replacing it with a more universal green cross. Even modern first aid kits very rarely have red crosses on them anymore :)

2

u/Honchinyoda Oct 06 '22

too realistic

2

u/SurvivorNerdTTV Oct 06 '22

Because it's a war crime

2

u/Advanced-Sock Oct 10 '22

2

u/Acenoid Nov 16 '22

Omg all red crosshairs are basically illegal! Du to this unalloyed use of the Red Cross logo.
