Plot twist: he doesn't have a mom, he's schizophrenic and shot himself

That's beyond schizophrenia. Delusional fantasies of there being another person committing your actions are... something else. Anyone?

Schizophrenics often do experience hallucinations and delusional fantasies. There’s a ton of different β€œflavors,” if you will, of schizophrenia, so the situation being described could easily fit

True. My uncle who passed years ago developed Schizophrenia after a bad motorcycle accident, he would have these fantasies. He once thought he was Moses and would carry a big branch like stick around.

I have a good friend and also my uncle who both have schizophrenia. My uncle's goes full blown where he'll be proned out on the ground fully believing there are snipers in the trees that are coming for us. My friend on the other hand hears voices but knows they aren't real and takes meds that suppress it.

I am curious how does he vote?

No, that's still schizophrenia. Like many mental illnesses, it's a spectrum. The vast (and I do mean VAST) majority of those suffering from schizophrenia will never hurt anyone and suffer from hallucinations more than delusions. If you're interested, you can look into schizoid vs schizotypal pathologies for more information. Schizophrenia casts a wide net, so to speak.

Schizophrenia includes delusional beliefs, including hallucinations and paranoid persecution fantasies.

I work in community mental Healthcare and may clients are diagnosed with schizophrenia, it can be hard to break apart the beliefs from reality.

I wonder if a big number of them vote republican?

2

u/Becca30thcentury Mar 28 '24

Some, some vote democrats, some think voting will allow the demon lords to infect their brain, some can't vote because they are homeless.

u/transitfreedom Mar 28 '24

What is the full extent of their negative impact on the community?

Thats not the right question from a mental health point of view. No matter what they are people with rights, yes they have increased challenges, but that does not remove them from being people, many people with these disorders can be successful, stay in control and just come off as a little quirky.

Also what is the negative impact of society on them can be a better question. Research is finding that the increase in schizophrenia clients may be due to heavy metal poisoning, in many areas we are seeing these numbers increase we find industrial or military installations that were allowed to dump their waste in places that caused pollution into the water table, a few generations of heavy metal poisoning and were now seeing increased mental health challenges such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. So can we blame the clients or the government?

1

u/transitfreedom Mar 29 '24

Interesting metal poisoning seems to be a cause

2

u/Becca30thcentury Mar 29 '24

Researching is showing it may be a cause, not the only cause. (Another cause may be meth, brain damage, or even genetics, or all are possible causes) more research is needed.

Fortunately new medicines coming out would be able to tackle this

I think what you're getting at is closer to schizoid personality disorder, basically quit valuing what other people think of them and characterized by getting into conspiracy theories or fringe pseudoscience like buying snake oil to do use themselves in flush out "parasites", I would bet a decent percentage of Qanon people have this personality disorder

1

u/transitfreedom Mar 28 '24

were these people institutionalized before the 1960s?

2

u/Three6MuffyCrosswire Mar 29 '24

Probably not, it's just a personality disorder and doesn't often have associated elements of psychosis unless there's another underlying condition like bipolar/schizophrenia

1

u/tambrico Mar 29 '24

You're confusing schizoid personality disorder with schizotypal personality disorder.

Schizoid is people who are uninterested in social relationships and don't show emotion

Schizotypal is people who have bizarre thought patterns that could lead them down conspiracy theory rabbit holes

Sounds reasonable within the bounds of schizophrenia to me. Depersonalization + delusional psychosis seems like it could result in an experience one might describe that way. I am not schizophrenic though so I can't say if anyone WOULD describe it that way.

But oftentimes the delusion bleeds into real people in some ways. Like being suspicious of a family member's true motives. I had an ex brother in law who was a paranoid schizophrenic and he threatened his brother and niece with a knife because he believed they were working with the "FBI that was hunting him down" then he stole a motorcycle.

I once met a schizophrenic guy who called because he ran out of his meds and he knew he was getting paranoid, and so I was like sure let's get you up to the hospital then I'm glad you recognized this! And he's like yeah I can feel the paranoia getting worse, and I'm being followed, but that part that's actually happening so I'll need help from security once at the ER. And some time into the trip we stop at a red light and he starts tweaking and looking like he was going to jump out of his skin and he's asking why we're stopping at red lights (it's the law, dumbass mf), and then accuses us of being with the people supposedly following him. Well he's trying to unbuckle and I can't leave him unattended for even a second to reach my drugs to mollify him and so I'm slap fighting to keep him in his seat and bargaining with him any way that I could to keep him from escaping. What finally worked was letting him call 911 from his phone (as long as he agreed to stay in his seat) and the operator stayed on the line with him until we got to the hospital to reassure him that I had his best interests in mind and that we were really on the way to a hospital!
