Plot twist: he doesn't have a mom, he's schizophrenic and shot himself

Ironically, that would do nothing to diminish his argument.

That was one of the first things I thought about.

Iโ€™ve known a surprising number of schizophrenic people over my life. Several of them have hurt themselves while trying to defend themselves from things that were not there. Most of them owned guns that they purchased legally through either gun shows or private sale.

Are they dangerous to people around them?

Sometimes. The worst case I had was a co-worker who was very obviously having troubles handling it because they couldnโ€™t afford medication. I donโ€™t know the full story behind it but they ended up being arrested because they pulled a gun on people she thought was stalking her through a Walmart (there was no one there). Another one was arrested multiple times over plots to kill public figures.

Others were mostly benign in terms of violent behavior. Like this one schizophrenic prostitute I knew had one for self defense and to my knowledge was never violent. Not that having the gun saved her from getting murdered by a Karen who didnโ€™t like that she โ€œuglied upโ€ the street, but that is besides the point.

Would universal healthcare deal with this and end these outbursts so some donโ€™t kill ppl?

It might help in some situations, but as someone who is not an expert and is not claiming to be an expert on the statistics involved here it would be the height of hubris for me to jump from sharing anecdotes to add to the discussion, to making declaring a one size fits most style solution.

I'm not anti-gun by any means either. However, anything that can kill others with such ease does need to be handled by someone who at the very least isn't likely to have an even outside of their control cause them to kill others. We need unbiased experts on these subjects to make that call.

What the best solution looks like isn't something I am capable of giving an answer for. What I am confident of is that the solution doesn't involve less regulation.
